Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

You've guys have got me all excited about that Vizio "32 LCD set. I'm looking for a new tv before my standard def dies on me.

Anyone know the best place to buy a tv, such as the Vizio in Canada? Best Buy/ Future Shop / Wal Mart? Or is there some diamond in the rough stores out there?

Actually I bought the Vizio 32" from Circuit city last night for about 560. Using the hdmi that came with my elite, it looks pretty good. The sound isnt the greatest but not the worst either.

I have the 360 but I don't think I have an elite. I have the HDD and the HDTV/SDTV switch but I don't know if that's the premium or elite. What's the difference?

I don't think you can beat the prices at Wal-Mart, and they do sell a 2-year warranty for not that much. I'm buying my TV's at Sam's Club, which is basically Wal-Mart anyways.

I'm pretty sure that if your 360 isn't black, you don't have an elite.

If you will be mainly watching TV or DVDs, get a Plasma.

If you are a gamer (360 or PC), definitely get an LCD. (I highly recommend a 1080p model and yes, there is a noticeable difference on games)

If you have even a somewhat bright room, get an LCD. (no glare)
I have to disagree with you on a few of your assessments.

I'd say watching tv or dvds is a push. Plasmas give deeper blacks so if you're watching something like Sin City then plasma would be better. I've watched HD movies on my Vizio LCD (via component) and my dad's Panny plasma (via HDMI)....all looked better on the LCD.

                  Totally agree on gaming. LCD

Plasmas are a LOT better in bright rooms. That (and not so great audio) has been my only slight negative(s) with a LCD.

The everyday price is $599, even on the Vizio website. Some B&M stores might have it on sale in the $560-575 range. I got a refurbished Vizio for $530 (including shipping) on ubid.com At one point tigerdirect had refurbished vizios for $469 plus shipping. (total price was like $510)

Just thought I'd mention that tigerdirect has refurbished 42inch Vizio plasmas for $699 which is a steal. I paid $500+ for the 32 inch.

Friday can't come soon enough, I get my TV's and I get to play my 360 on a HDTV FINALLY! I'm getting the 32" and 42" for about $1,600 total. Probably another $150 for the warranties. I'm not gonna complain about that at all.

Actually plasmas are horrible in bright rooms. They reflect lots of light since they have a layered glass screen. LCDs (most) have a matte finish on the screen and are not reflective at all.

My common sense meter seems to believe this statement without any actual knowledge or experience with HDTVs
