If I was a betting man, HD-DVD would get my bet due to name and usability. If we hear of a Fox, Lionsgate, Disney jump to HD-DVD, then we know at that very point that BD is in trouble. Until then, BD has the upper hand due to those 3. And if you ever hear of Columbia TriStar going to HD-DVD, might as well toss your BD's on a bonfire...LOL Same with Universal going to BD.
I thought I was the only one that did DVD house cleaning every few months. LOL! HD-DVD has the better marketing name imo over BD. At this point, all I want is to see Universal to start releasing some of their library to BD, I want my Pitch Black, Chronicles of Riddick, and Serenity damnit!

And Candy, bro, I hope that they dont' fail too. But honestly, more and more of HD's "exclusive" companies are going to BluRay or Nuetral, so I'm thinking that BD will be the winner. It's all a toss up at this point though.

This is the first time I've ever done a "Spring cleaning" type thing, and it was pretty much done spur of the moment, but now I have more room for everything, so I'm happy about that at least, lol.
There is nothing wrong with what you did as you might be happier with owning these movies in HiDef. I know I already replaced a few of my movies by getting rid of DVD's I wasn't watching anymore.

I'm still stunned the have yet to be released versions of Spiderman on BD, especially since the PS3 uses the same logo! LOL
Isn't Spiderman coming this year on BD this summer or fall?

Yeah, I mean... if I watched those DVD's... i wouldn't have gotten rid of them. The majority however, I bought for her... since she's not here anymore, what's the point of me keeping them? I did have a rather impressive collection of chick flicks though, lol.

I still kept around 20 of my favorite DVD's, so it's not like I traded in everything... just the ones that I knew I wouldn't watch anymore. Now that I did that, it's made me realize some flaws in my home entertainment setup, and i'm thinking about fixing that too, lol...

So BlueRay's "superior specs" means very little. However, one thing that the general public does go by is a products name. The general public is not going to take a lot of time to research things. They'll go to a store with a bunch of money and they'll ask about getting the next-gen DVD for their new HDTV.

The sales clerk will show them BlueRay and HD-DVD and explain to them the differences, the specs, etc. John Doe and Jane Doe will promptly recognize that HD-DVD is what they're looking for, after all, the HD is what their tv is right? And they're looking for a DVD for it. BlueRay, what is BlueRay? It sounds like something they don't understand, but HD-DVD they understand. A name makes the sell and that's why HD-DVD will win the format war. And all of the above doesn't even take into account that a lot of people will go into a store and never even ask for help, just look for an HD format for DVD and see HD-DVD and buy it, never even knowing what the heck that BlueRay thing was.

Anyways, I read the article and I started thinking about it, it makes a lot of sense. Having worked in retail I remember how hard it was for me to convince people to look at the Genesis over the Nintendo64. People go buy product name a lot, if it's something they don't understand they will bypass it, specs be damned. That's why I agree with the writer of that article that HD-DVD will win the format war. Thoughts?
You make a very good point and this is what EG was talking about. It's the HD-DVD name that is more marketable than BD. I have been to 2 Best Buys talking to their Magnolia sales people and they were pushing the BD more than the Hd-DVD as being better and blah blah blah. Like you said, that HD in front of DVD might sway some people. The fact that the HD-DVD player is only $499 compared to the $799 and $999 players available could be a big deal.

I was reading over at AVSForums that BD was beating HD-DVD in sales November and December due to the PS3 releasing.

Right now, from what I've gathered, BD is outselling HD-DVD titles 3.5:1 ratio. That's a pretty large gap this early on. However, those numbers could swing at any minute... after all, I'll be picking up the HD-DVD drive too, lol. Watch those numbers inflate fellas.

Yeah, that makes sense considering there's a half a million BlueRay players instantly in peoples homes in December. And I really don't care which "wins" myself as I plan to get the HD-DVD add-on now and a PS3 later this summer/fall so I'll have both. I just think the whole name issue is going to be what decides it.

what are the best blu-ray exclusives thus far? I've got a gift cert to amazon and I figured I might as well use it for that. EG said Saw wasn't that good, so I'll hold off on that. Once all my stuff sells on ebay, I'll be going to pick up the ps3 at some point, probably next weekend.

go to www.highdefdigest.com... they have a breakdown of the picture quality/audio quality in their reviews. They were extremely helpful. A lot of posters at AVS have said that Crank is an awesome transfer to BluRay... so that'll be my first one. MI:3 was another one.

I've already decided, that if we go in together, and decide which format we want to win, that'll be the winner EG, lol.

But every stat I've seen, is that since the PS3 release, BD is outselling HD-DVD by quite a bit, and increasing each month. I mean, those numbers could be totally skewed, but I don't know.

I think the best BD movies to own that I have watched so far and even have read good things about:

                        Kingdom of Heaven
                        Mission Impossible III
Crank (Yes, one of the best transfers that I have seen)
                        Transporter 2
                        Superman Returns
                        Underworld Evolution
The Descent (from EG saying it was good on BD, I only own the DVD)

I've read that ever since the PS3 has come out that BD has slowly been ctaching up to HD-DVD and then since 12/24 they have taken the lead in sales.

With more PS3's being sold, that means more BD's are going to be bought. There are well over 1 million PS3's sold worldwide. There are only 140,000+ HD-DVD 360 players sold and now we haven't factored how many stand alone players are out there for both players.

                              Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread

Blu-ray software sales have now surpassed HD-DVD for the first time the week of December 24 and they did so by an impressive 20 percent. The sales gap is expected to widen further in 2007 based on research conducted by Twentieth Century Fox and Blu-ray is expected to outsell HD-DVD by a 3.5-to-1 ratio by the end of the first quarter.

One of the driving factors behind the growth in sales is the PlayStation 3 (PS3), which was launched on November 17, 2006 in North America. The PS3 has been selling out at retail outlets since it was launched and despite shortages Sony has been able to meet its target of shipping 1 million PS3s in North America by the end of 2006. What's even more impressive is that they did it faster than their top-selling PlayStation 2 (PS2) platform did when it was launched. Sony is now targetting 6 million PS3 consoles shipped worldwide by the end of the fiscal year (end of March 2007).

While many have doubted the effect the PlayStation 3 would have on the format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD it's hard to argue with the numbers. Blu-ray sales are up 700 percent since the mid-November launch of the PlayStation 3 and other Blu-ray players from Sony, Panasonic and Philips. According to a recent survey by Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) of over 10,000 PS3 owners, 80 percent indicated they will buy Blu-ray movies and 75 percent said they use the PS3 as a primary device for viewing movies. However, this shouldn't come as such a big surprise as those that have bought the PS3 might as well take advantage of the Blu-ray playback capability, which still is the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market at just $499.

The content advantage that Blu-ray enjoys is another major factor that should become more and more evident now that the Blu-ray exclusive studios (Disney, Fox, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate) are starting to release more titles in the format. When looking at the 20 top selling DVDs of 2006 almost all were released by movie studios supporting Blu-ray, which means that titles such as Pirates of the Carribean and Cars will only be available for Blu-ray. The content advantage should further shift in Blu-ray's favor as the format neutral studios (Warner, Paramount) catch up their Blu-ray release schedules with HD-DVD so that the same movies are available for both formats.

Overall the Blu-ray backers are confident that it's only a matter of time before the Blu-ray format becomes the dominant format in the US market, just as it already accounts for 96% of the market in Japan.
