Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
Meh, that's a moot point. There is a 200GB disc in final testing for stability for BluRay... so storage at this point is moot.
Anyway, I'm ticked off living in a small town. There are NO BluRay titles within 60 miles of me. Tomorrow, I get the joy of driving "x" miles to go start my collection. I'm officially DVD'less now.. as I went and traded the rest of my titles in today. Final price for all of them traded in? $345If my ex hadn't taken the other half of them, I'd be sitting pretty. But $345 should get me started out pretty nicely with a BluRay collection. Should be around 15-20 titles once finished. I don't even think there are that many out right now that I want.

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
:y4: No.. I'm going to pick up the HD DVD drive as well possibly in the near future. Right now though.. I want to utilize the PS3's BD capabilities. If it doesn't win the war... I'm left with some movies that are High-Def, just the same, just in a different format. I doubt anything will come along that looks better than HD-DVD/BD in the next few years... so in my eyes, you can't go wrong with either one, as long as you have the means to play them.
Unless you know something that I don't? Are there reasons NOT to pick up BD or HD-DVD's right now? Other than the obvious overpricing?Twitter - WTF_OS

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
No, other than, either format, or even both could completely fail. That's why I'm not double dipping movies, because when one of them or both are gone, I'm then stuck with movies that I can't play anymore.
As Odogg said, Betamax...Laserdisc...etcComment

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
So are you just not buying any? Or not buying a lot of them? Granted, they are newer technologies, but with THD coming out, I think both of them will be around for a while at least. I'm still betting on BluRay, but either one is succeptable to failure.
I want movies that I can enjoy right now. Granted, I'm not going to go out and spend LOADS of money on these things... but I had a hundred DVD's that I would NEVER watch again.. (not 100, quite a few less, but regardless), and got credit for them. Now... I can very easily hang on to $350 in store credit, or I can go out and get something that I can enjoy. Some of the movies that I sold, I'm going to pick back up on BluRay, so in a sense, I'm just upgrading. While some may see this as short-sighted...I guess I am in the camp that "I have the technology, I want to take advantage of it..." I mean, if I didn't have a television that did 1080p, or if I didn't have a PS3 or HD Drive, then it'd really be dumb... but I made those investments, so I could enjoy them and what they're capable of. I know, may not have been the smartest thing in the world, but then again, how often do I make smart decisions? lol.Twitter - WTF_OS

My thing was you said you sold all your normal dvd's. If one of these formats fail, and you rebuy movies you already owned on the new format, and then that format fails, you're rebuying your dvd collection again.
If one of them goes away this year or next, or whenever, and the other becomes the norm, I would start to buy my fav's that I already own on the HD or BD format. Now I'm not, just new movies.
I mean, if one fails, I'm in the same boat, I have 6 BD's and 7 HD's right now.Comment

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
Gotcha... I guess I was just being opposite. I mean, my entertainment stand was a MESS. I had all of these old movies that I NEVER watched any more, with the majority being chick flicks from my relationship (Wedding Planner, Walk to Remember, etc). Anyway, i didn't see myself ever watching any of them again, so I neatly "cleaned house" so to speak. I did keep my favorite DVD's, that haven't been released on DVD yet (Shanghai Noon, Shanghai Knights, O Brother Where Art thou lol, Rush Hour 1 & 2, US Marshalls, etc.) But the ones that I knew would never be watched, I just didn't see the need in keeping them.
I know, if BluRay fails, I'm up the creek without a paddle (which I also didn't trade in, without a paddle, lol), but I guess that's the risk you take. I guess I'll cross my fingers and hope to goodness it doesn't fail. I'd hate to have to rebuy other movies... lol.Twitter - WTF_OS

If I was a betting man, HD-DVD would get my bet due to name and usability. If we hear of a Fox, Lionsgate, Disney jump to HD-DVD, then we know at that very point that BD is in trouble. Until then, BD has the upper hand due to those 3. And if you ever hear of Columbia TriStar going to HD-DVD, might as well toss your BD's on a bonfire...LOL Same with Universal going to BD.Comment

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
:y4: I can see it now...
"These BluRay discs make for horrible firewood, lol."
And Candy, bro, I hope that they dont' fail too. But honestly, more and more of HD's "exclusive" companies are going to BluRay or Nuetral, so I'm thinking that BD will be the winner. It's all a toss up at this point though.
This is the first time I've ever done a "Spring cleaning" type thing, and it was pretty much done spur of the moment, but now I have more room for everything, so I'm happy about that at least, lol.Twitter - WTF_OS

I'm still stunned the have yet to be released versions of Spiderman on BD, especially since the PS3 uses the same logo! LOLComment

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
I read an article once that said HD-DVD would win the format war for one very important reason. The general public don't read tech specs, all they know is if something looks good or not. So BlueRay's "superior specs" means very little. However, one thing that the general public does go by is a products name. The general public is not going to take a lot of time to research things. They'll go to a store with a bunch of money and they'll ask about getting the next-gen DVD for their new HDTV.
The sales clerk will show them BlueRay and HD-DVD and explain to them the differences, the specs, etc. John Doe and Jane Doe will promptly recognize that HD-DVD is what they're looking for, after all, the HD is what their tv is right? And they're looking for a DVD for it. BlueRay, what is BlueRay? It sounds like something they don't understand, but HD-DVD they understand. A name makes the sell and that's why HD-DVD will win the format war. And all of the above doesn't even take into account that a lot of people will go into a store and never even ask for help, just look for an HD format for DVD and see HD-DVD and buy it, never even knowing what the heck that BlueRay thing was.
Anyways, I read the article and I started thinking about it, it makes a lot of sense. Having worked in retail I remember how hard it was for me to convince people to look at the Genesis over the Nintendo64. People go buy product name a lot, if it's something they don't understand they will bypass it, specs be damned. That's why I agree with the writer of that article that HD-DVD will win the format war. There is no way that I'm going to replace older movies that I have on DVD that originally released in the 70's/80's/Some early 90's unless it's a favorite movie of mine. They only look slightly better on BD, and at these price points not worth it.Comment
