Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1

I watched quite a few lately, Here's a few I've seen on HBO Max the last couple days: Analyze This, The Assignment,Slumdog Millionaire, and Gran Torino. Loved all those movies. I just bought the Hangover tonight for Blu Ray and watched it, and I have to say it's one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, and I laughed a hell of alot.

I watched Avatar in 3D early last week. Epic. I will have to see it again soon. I watched Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs on blu-ray over the weekend. I forget how dark and creepy Disney movies were back in the day. The Queen gave me the chills when she turned into the hag.

Maybe my 70% estimate was a bit high, but there's a considerable amount of foreign language speaking in the movie.

And it's not like the foreign languages were a bad thing, quite the opposite in fact. I preferred that to the magical "all of a sudden everyone in Germany speaks English" approach that Valkyrie took.
I finally got around to watching this last night and I felt the same way. There was a lot of reading involved but, it really didn't bother me one bit. I LOVED the scene at the beginning of the movie as well, as the bar scene. That was just intense.

        My rating- 9/10

I watched this on Christmas eve and as agree with your assessment. I thought there were some decent scenes but, for the most part it was fairly predictable. Also, I'm not really a big fan of Reese Witherspoon anymore. I can't quite put my finger on it but, think it has something to do with the Legally Blonde movies or something. Whatever it is I just don't like her as much as I used too.

La Bamba on Encore the other night. It still leaves me with an empty feeling at the end. The guy who played Richie's brother was a bit over the top. The rendition of Jackie Wilson and "Lonely Teardrops" (that song wreaks "cool") was well done too.

                        Okay you can answer this:

Is it all just action crap or does Holmes actually, you know, use his deductive reasoning and goes sleuthing around?

Quality movie. Going in I knew the ending for the most part. The movie does a good job portraying how dogs become a part of your family. If you don't know the ending...don't read the spoiler..

                              Pride and Glory

When the clouds cast over New York City and the sun goes down, what's the difference? A cold tale of a family of police officers who look out for their own in times of inner-turmoil, despite others' misfortunes. This was the movie's portrayal from beginning to end, which always kept focus and neve lost point.

There was no real protagonist or antagonist for the entire movie's sake, but rather within each scene. The first half-hour and last half-hour had style, loyalty, and functionality. The middle bulk of the movie, while dark, gripping, and serious in tone (was not a movie for short, cheap laughs or punchlines), became repetitive in scope. Scene after scene was nothing but pressing one-on-one heated conversations, interrogations, and elemental torture while the director stuck the camera in their faces the entire time. This is something that works well three times in a movie, tops. But when it happens (and I'm not kidding) about nine times within one hour, it's tough to... not to say get bored, but lose track of what the movie wanted to tell us.

It played out kind of like a House episode, actually: when one problem was seemingly resolved, another problem opened up as a result. Only, this shifted with each main character (almost in a "Four Brothers" kind of way). It was smart writing, actually... but to keep people attracted and enthused in a two hour movie, there needs to be one or two memorable middle scenes. Instead, they strung together consecutive two-person scenes of nothing but back and forth bickering. There was one scene that was less than that and tried to express the movie's morals, but I fear it came about ten minutes too early as there were two more loud-exchange scenes.

That was my other issue: the use of the F-bomb. I was watching this movie in our family room and my mom would pop in and out periodically, and every time she would come in, three more F-bombs would drop. At one point she said, "Do they know any other word?" Normally I would deem her pretentious, but this time she was right. I kid you not, there could not have been any less than 150 F-bombs dropped in this movie. If someone told me it was actually closer to 200, I would believe them. I know they are trying to fit an NY theme here, but I know people that talk like this back and forth, and even they don't have the breath to cuss that many times while in conversation. Literally reducing the amount by 80% would have been nothing but good for this movie.

On a positive note, this movie would be a [i[great[/i] basis for a GTA game's storyline that I would love playing, especially if it had a co-op sandbox mode (much like single player, only... two people). As another positive, I haven't even yet even talked about the appreciable acting jobs by Norton, Farrell, Voight, and Emmerich. It was top-notch acting by everybody involved, and every gunshot seemed visceral for the story's progression. It was a movie that heavily relied on instrumental aggression, and they certainly picked the right actors to be involved in it.

Overall, this movie was actually rather solid, but with very tangible weaknesses. It's not that the middle dragged per se, but it was simply each scene trying to up its predecessor, and I feel they just didn't know when they said enough was enough. Combined with enough F-bombs to take out a pod of baby seals and the director's heavy intent on facial recognition rather than background merging and scenic scoping, it took the few bits away from what could have been a better word-of-mouth hit in the box office, especially given the actors that were in this movie and the moralities it focused on.
