I thought the fourth kind was one of the all time worst movies I have ever see, along with the happening. I'm pretty easy to please too. Did anyone else like the fourth kind?GT: Event Horizon 0Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
Not really, but when I saw the pre-screening a month before it came out I was more engaged in the fact that I believed the footage was real rather (because I didn't believe they were able to claim it was real when it really wasn't, and there was no reason to believe it wasn't). The movie itself first started off in a nice fashion, kind of like The Ring. But it pretty instantly lost its touch, and only had one (maybe two) good jump moments along with it.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Got back to using my Netflix streaming. Watched some martial arts movies. Jackie Chan's "The Drunken Master" was awesome. Also watched a 3hrs. flick (broken up into 1hr segments) with David Carradine...Son of the Dragon. It was meh...
Probably going to watch something with Bruce Lee in it tonight.Comment

TV movies count right?
Anyways I watched the two part TV movie Keep Your Head Up, Kid: The Don Cherry Story which aired on the CBC. The movie covers Cherry's life from when he was a struggling hockey player up to the point he joined CBC and started Coach's Corner. Overall, I thought it was a pretty strong film though some parts were obviously soft pedaled a bit since the movie was written and produced by Don's son Tim.
The guy that played Cherry (Jared Keeso) did a damn good job. Cherry's the type of guy that you could easily fall into parody with but he was very persuasive and believable as Grapes. He had the voice down pat for most of the film and the mannerisms were clearly very Don Cherryesque. The scenes in the 2nd half of the movie where he's coaching you can see the intensity and meanness in his eyes that Cherry was often said to have back then so it was truly inspired casting.
The movie doesn't portray Don completely positively but that's where the soft peddling comes in. You see how Don's ambition to first be the best hockey player he can be and then later in his coaching career robbed him of the kind of family life and responsibility that he should've had. You can clearly see at times that there was strain in Don and Rose's relationship but the film never outright showed that but rather hinted it which made the acting job for the actress playing Rose a bit thankless. (You know the whole "long suffering wife" deal)
The hockey scenes were quite good and are probably the 3rd best of all time behind Miracle and Slap Shot. I especially liked the recreation of Game 7 of the '79 semi-final (hell all of the Bruins footage to be honest) where they mixed actual broadcast with the real PBP along with the actors on the bench and such. It was quite amazing and pretty seamless IMO.
Overall it was a pretty darn good movie though I wished they either would've had the real Don Cherry doing the voice over narration or dumped it altogether.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

I watched Bigger, Stronger, Faster on Netflix.
Pretty interesting doc on performance-enhancing drugs. I'd recommend it.
However, the way the filmmaker basically encourages the use of steroids in adult males is pretty disgusting.Last edited by Gibbz; 03-31-2010, 05:08 PM.Comment

2012 - About as ridiculous as it gets, but still entertaining for the awesome visual effects.
Bridge to Terabithia - Not at all what i was expecting, but very good anyway.Comment

Observe and Report
One of those darker comedies that was kind of left in the dust with the comedy aspect. It ran on some jokes far too long to be regarded as "comfortable" humor, especially if you were writing it, filming it, or sitting in the theater with an audience watching it. Seth Rogen was the only person to really deliver any humor; I was kind of disappointed with Anna Faris after seeing what she's done in the past, and I don't think that Michael Pena's character or plot involvement had any relevance to the main points of the movie whatsoever.
This movie had a strange mix of genius and idiocy at the same time. There's one area near the end of the movie where he's giving a parody character narrative that is just absolute gold, but then there are just some head scratchers. Rogen has some good involvement with other characters when he's only just with one other person, but with multiple people the scene assuredly falls flat. As the protagonist and as a familiar actor that we normally love, his character was easy to like. But if you really step back for a second and think about what he's gone through and his delusional psyche that he portrays and put him in a body IRL, he's just kind of an egotistical jerk who finds himself well above others.
Again, a dark comedy with less humor than there should have been (though there was more intended humor in there but just fell flat). Looking in retrospect, it wasn't that great of a movie. There have been two "mall cop" movies that have not quite shown the best of what a "mall cop" movie truly could be, though I think O&R was much closer than Paul Blart (of course, they are two completely different kinds of movies with two completely different intended audiences). This doesn't rank up anywhere near movies like Role Models or Pineapple Express, but like anything else it certainly has its moments. The synopsis is hilarious in itself: Seth Rogen is a mall security officer trying to catch a "serial flasher".
The movie is only 87 minutes and I saw it free On Demand, so if you have that time to kill, knock yourself out as you're guaranteed a couple of laughs. Otherwise, I can certainly think of better things to do.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

I watched Yojimbo tonight. Its funny that in today's movie world, everybody raises such a fuss over remakes and reboots they kind of overlook the fact that it's been going on for a long time. Anyway, obviously an awesome movie. Criterion did an excellent job with the transfer to blu-ray as for being almost 50 years old it looked incredible. The movie itself was great. The masterless samurai was straight up badass.

14 Blades and Little Big Soldier..were my latest two.
14 was incredible, special effects, the choreography and all were superb.
Little Big Soldier, might be Jackie Chan's best overseas film since The Myth and New Police Story.Comment

Wall-E: Amazing flick. It's Pixar so I expected nothing less.
Super Size Me: Pretty good and a bit frightening, but it didn't have much impact on me since I don't eat fast food anyway. I think the film would be more effective to someone who eats it every week.Comment

IMO, the most impacting thing was in the extras. They showed how long it took for fast food to biodegrade. Those fries stayed golden for months---that can't be natural.Comment

District 9
Brothers
Training Day
I'll just keep it brief and say that I loved all of them. Brothers was the weakest of the three, but was a welcoming surprise altogether. District 9 was a pretty damn good movie and the effects were much better than I thought they would be. I just can't believe I hadn't seen Training Day until now either.
EDIT: Oh wait, I also recently saw The Taking of Pelham 123. This was a movie that was greatly affected in the wrong way by the choice of director. I've seen him direct three movies with Denzel Washington (Pelham, Man on Fire, and Deja Vu), and every time I get taken out of the movie because of his artistic inclusion. He is going lower and lower in my book alongside Brett Ratner, however he at least has the integrity to take unique stories. Good, short, and action-packed. I heart John Travolta.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment
