Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Funny enough, I went for it and rented 'Solo' yesterday anyway...damn Star Wars bug always seems to get me.
Perhaps my rock-bottom expectations helped, but I thought it was a fun little SW movie; very different and lighter in tone than more recent SW films and so I kind of liked that. I could see 20-nothing Han Solo being kind of like what was presented, though I would think a bit less idealistic given his growing-up situation.
Glover was outstanding as Lando, and it's always good to see the FalconI have a thing for E. Clarke so her presence brightened up the place. Kessel Run sequence was good fun Star Wars.
I loved Solo. Not liked. Loved. Old School Star Wars, saw it twice on the silver screen.
Far better than The Last Jedi. It was a fun orgin story. I thought the guy who played Han did a great job. Lando was awesome. Woody was Woody....but that's not bad. I like Woody.
The movie was far better than the gross and it is a shame it got a bad rap far before it was even released by all those rabid idiotic Star War nerds. Now Playing on PS5:

I didn't like it quite as well as Rogue One, which surprised me even more and I think it's very good. But it's a good story and 'Solo' fits well in the films for me. I'll get in on BluRay soon to add to the collection.GO 'HAWKS!

Hotel Artemis. Pretty original for about 2/3rds, then it just got goofy once a certain actor showed up. Plus, Zachary Quinto does not play a badass well. Foster was good as was Bautista. Sofia Boutella playing her typical kickass assassin.
Overall, not bad if there's nothing else on your plate.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Watched the new Sicario last night, Sicario: Day of the Soldado. I didn't find it as good as the first one. It starts with a pretty good bang and features a very real sense we all know exists, that the "United States does these dirty behind the scenes moves in real life". The problem is as the movie goes along it drifts and becomes more and more convoluted.
Gist of the movie...
SpoilerWhat starts out as the United States creating a war between two cartel gangs because of them helping human traffic in ISIS members who blew themselves up on US soil (In a Target), it then spins out-of-control of confusion as they kidnap a kingpin's daughter, fly her to Texas, only to try and sneak her back into Mexico for who knows what. Then Del Toro takes on the task alone to sneak her back OUT of Mexico, only for Josh Brolin to save the girl and put her into witness protection. The end!
All in all it was a pretty good action/drama but left a lot to be desired. It had the starting potential to be fantastic, but slipped badly as it went along. I really liked the first one and maybe that caused me to compare them to much but I couldn't help feel a little let down.

A Star is Born
Excellent movie, really impressive directorial debut for Bradley Cooper. Also the best role ever for him as well. Lady Gaga was fantastic as well, I think if she really wanted to she could be a real solid actress. Also Sam Elliott being Sam Elliott and he also brought it.
Music was great, i recommend definitely watching this in Dolby Atmos. Cooper shocked me, I really thought he was a real country rock star with that voice and guitar play. Of course Lady Gaga is great and there was a song she sang and I was like wow, that’s not Lady Gaga that’s Stefani (her real name). It wasn’t over done either and picked perfect spots to have the music.
Anyway, definitely check it out with your lady, it’s a heavy love story that’s well told. My only con is that it’s long and Cooper could have cut out some scenes to have a better pace.
This will get Oscar buzz for sure.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I want to see that just because I must've seen the trailer before every movie the entire year and even though I knew it was I always still asked myself "Is that Lady Gaga?" First Man this weekend should be great.

Cooper and she were both great and I liked Sam Elliot as Coop's brother and Andrew Dice Clay as Lady Gaga's father.Comment

Sam Elliott had some amazing scenes in there. Just him backing out of the driveway was powerful.

The Witch
I was really looking forward to this since I prefer subtle horror over in-your-face blood and gore. But I found this more strange than scary. I’m going to have to re-watch it with subtitles.
Black Panther
Even better the second time around.Comment

Waiting for Guffman Got a hankerin' for a Christopher Guest movie. If you like the Spinal Tap/SCTV type movies, this is a hoot! Guest as Corky is tremendous. Eugene Levy has such good comedic timing also. They always get the right support characters from their list.
Mascots Not as good as Guffman, but still some hilarious moments. The Brit is truly funny.Comment

Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)
I'm a big fan of Taylor Sheridan's trilogy of 'noir western' films, Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River. All excellent films, but I knew Sicario would be a tough film to follow up on so checked my expectations just a little.
To put it simply, Sicario is a great film, and DOTS is a good film.
If you liked Sicario it's worth a watch just for Brolin and Del Toro's characters, and Taylor's writing. But this one isn't as pointed as Sicario and doesn't carry the weight of the previous film. But it is a very good action-drama film.
On my scale, Sicario is a 9/10, and DOTS is a strong 7.5.GO 'HAWKS!

Ant-Man & the Wasp Even better than Ant-Man. The comedic timing and lines (and amount of comedy) blew away Ragnorok, which I hated other than for Blanchett. Very interesting story and the choreography of the fight scenes, especially for the Wasp were tremendous. What a great extra scene as well.Comment
