I too just saw A Star Is Born. I thought the characters were excellent combated with terrific performances (including in the music, of course). I did think the pacing and story structure was a bit off though, and some moments weren't as emotionally invigorating as I would have hoped for them to be. Some plot points also didn't completely finish their arcs either, but that's okay because the overall film's message was thorough.

Ultimately I really liked it, and want to learn to play at least two of those songs on guitar now. It did however catch me by surprise that this isn't a completely original film.

Yeah, I saw that in a spoiler free review on youtube.

Rewatched the first two Underworld movies recently. I know it isn't a popular franchise critically, but the first two are dumb fun.

I watched a couple flicks from 1959 one of which was a "must see" for me for a LOONG time and I finally got around to watching it:

4D Man: This was a great little sci-fi flick though a little talky at times it's got a pretty good story. How can you say no to an energy vampire who can walk through walls?! The HUGE demerit for this film was the jazz score. Holy Toledo! That just made this movie nearly unwatchable for me but the story was enough to work and the guy who did the score wisely chose to go with deeper sounding instrumentation towards the last third of the film.

Edge of Eternity: This movie is an admittedly routine procedural however a couple things make it worth watching. The Grand Canyon is practically a character in this film. Director Don Siegel and cinematographer Burnett Guffey made wonderful use of the CinemaScope camera to show the beauty and sheer enormity of the Canyon. Siegel also used the camera to great effect by showing the desolation and emptiness of the area around the once booming ore town.

The other part that makes this movie worth watching is the tense final set piece which took place over the canyon and was just amazing to see. Understandably all the close up shots were done in studio but the long shots had stunt doubles clinging on for dear life.

I love the first one and 3rd one (Rise of The Lycans) the most. The 2nd one is ok.

Mark Kermode, by far my favorite reviewer, said it was good, but you need to be able to go with it. If you are someone that reviews movies in your head as you watch them, you might not care for it. If you can view a movie from the lens of the director, you might like it more.

I like his movies, and think he gets an unfair shake from social media. In today’s social media world, Alfred Hitchcock would get **** on.

But you have to admit there was a big drop off after Signs. The Happening was downright laughable. He did seem to be on rebound with Split but I don't think he had full artistic control with that from what I've heard. I didn't see The Visit, which just seems more like pure horror (not my bag).

Did see The Girl in the Spider's Web. You didn't really need to see the first one to get this. It's a pretty straight forward espionage action thriller. Very entertaining with a few holy **** moments. Worth the look.

The only real small plot hole was:

I still contend that The Happening is the greatest Hollywood troll job ever done.

I also didn't like The Village when I first saw it at like sixteen years old, but I have seen a couple of times since it since and like it much more now. It would get a "fresh tomato" for me now, if you will. The only thing I would change is his cameo that takes me out of it a little in the wrong time, much like Tarantino in Django Unchained.

I have yet to see Lady in the Water, The Last Airbender, or After Earth. I have no plans of seeing any of them either. This seems to have been a poor trio when he was in his down years.

The original trio of The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs were definitely his best work, though. I respected The Visit, admired Split and gave kudos to Devil (his story, not his screenplay or directed project), but we'll see where Glass fits within all of this when I give that one a chance. I think the fact that I'm willing to see his new projects again is a testament to the fact that he never completely lost me.

Lady in the Water was probably the closest I’ve ever come to walking out of the theater in the middle of the movie. It was drastically different from the trailers IMO to the point that it felt like it wasn’t even the same genre of movie I was expecting.

Used AMC A-List to get an early screening of Lego Movie 2. It was good sequel. I liked that the humans had a bigger presence this time around.

The 2019 Serenity was nothing to write home about. After the "twist" , you get a completely different movie. Neither were good, IMO.

Oceans 8. It was strange. The big heist went off without a hitch. They were never really challenged by anything the whole movie. Made it boring. Waste of the ensemble cast imo.

Tag. It was a dumb bro movie. Had laughs here and there. Ending was cute I guess? Meh

Spiderverse. It was very good. Refreshing to see an animated film take advantage of being animated instead of forcing hyper realism into the design. The comic book feel to the movie was a feast for the eyes.

I don't get out to see movies much. I did go for Star Is Born, which was actually a lot better than I expected. I dislike remakes, but this almost made it feel like the movie stood on it's own. Bohemian Rhapsody was good too, but I liked that more for the production value, rather than the story itself. The story seemed too much like a shell of Queen, and another reason to tell the generic rock story (band forms, band gets popular, band parties too hard, egos emerge, band breaks up, band has hard times, band gets back together).

Beautiful Boy. Waited a while to see this one with pretty high anticipation. Really like Carrell in dramas and dramedys (Dan In Real Life, The Big Short, etc.), but I think this really fell flat. Found it quite dull. The subject matter of course has been visited many, many times. Actually was pretty impressed with the actor who played his son. Outside of that.....nothing really earth-shattering here.

Running Scared. Watch this every few years. Such a good buddy cop movie. Has the typical 80's film feel to it. So wished they could've done a follow up, though not sure they could've topped this. Good subtle humor. Gregory Hines was an underrated actor ... it's a shame he died so young. If you've put off watching this, take a look. Jimmy Smits as the bad guy as well.

Watched this on Tubi as well. Using it as an app on our Fire Sticks for older movies. Has a pretty good line-up for stand up comedy and comedy documentaries as well (e.g., Sam Kinison)
