Also, since Conan appeals to people who actually understand and use computers on a regular basis rather than the Early Bird Special crowd, many of his supporters watch online, which also doesn't contribute to the ratings.

They have a weird control over every major media corporation.

Yeah, i know how polls work (smaller sample size, but representative of the entire community), but i really doubt Nielson is super reliable...

He's been on the job for 7 months. Leno had 17 years to build a following.

They are two very different hosts with different comedic visions. O'Brien comes from a writer's background and Leno from a comedian background. To switch hosts and expect instant ratings domination is foolish.

The ratings system is a joke (like others have said). The same rating system that NBC uses to cancel great new shows is the same system they use to continually keep crap like "Celebrity Apprentice" on the air.

I don't see how this is completely Conan's fault for the ratings disaster when Leno is the lead-in! Affiliates are pissed because Leno's show blows and so people aren't sticking around to watch the NBC affiliated news. This directly ties in to how many people watch Conan after. I'm not saying it's all Leno's fault Conan's ratings aren't what NBC had hoped, but I think they are definitely apart of it.

You'd think that cable companies would be able to exactly tell who's watching what, even tivo could, but I can see why the industry would want a 3rd party to do it. It's just a flawed and outdated system.

Jay will always be the Doritos guy to me. Never really found the cat funny. I don't watch any of that light night stuff, but I used to watch Conan pretty regularly back in the day. Out of all the guys I've seen, his brand of humor was the funniest to me. This whole situation is kind of jacked up of Leno IMO. Thanks for posting those clips. That was hilarious.

Yep. Last year, even Jay said to give Conan time, because ratings always take a hit when a nighttime talk show changes hosts. When Leno took over the Tonight Show, their ratings took a nose dive and he was consistently in second place. NBC stuck with him and 4 years later he overtook Letterman and hasn't looked back.

Leno aside, it doesnt matter if it was Conan or not.. if they wanted fast result ratings from him, they should've told him that in the beginning, or put it in his contract.

This is NBC's doing here, and as I said, I work under the same company. They used to layoff their so called bottom 10% employees every year.

Im telling you, they only make decisions based on covering their own behinds and money.

If leno would of just retired conan's ratings would of been much better and would of picked up over time. Leno's 10pm show just ruined everything. It was a terrible lead in show, took away elite guests that could of been on tonight show instead, and split viewers between the two shows.

You cant expect conan to do leno tonight show ratings with leno still being on, and it being conan's first year. NBC and leno are to blame for this circus.

NBC is absolutely the worst run network of the four major networks. They routinely cancel promising shows (even if I don't necessarily like them) and keep recycling garbage back. They don't give anything time. You'd think by now they'd realize their television programming model is not working. Yet, they wonder why they are #4 to the others.

It was definitely handled poorly, but now that I think about it, im not surprised one bit.

Anyone think Kimmel was on Leno's show the other night just to give him some promo, get people to tune in and watch him instead of Conan taking shots at NBC? He'll be out the door soon, might as well make his ratings look as terrible as possible on the way...

Just something I was thinking about when I same JK on Leno.
“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. We’re talking about on the biggest stage, in New York, playing out of position and asked to hit fourth for the New York Yankees. I mean, that’s never been done.” - Sheffield on Sheffield

Leno finally took some shots back at Letterman, I wonder why he waited until Friday to do so. The fact that Letterman doesn't record on Friday and does two shows on Thursday probably had nothing to do with it, but who knows what goes on in that huge chin of his.

Conan needs to bring back the masturbating bear, I could settle for them booking Norm MacDonald too.

Jay is done imo. He's never going to get his ratings back. I hoep someone starts a campaign to not watch him. At least have it work for a little while. I know i wont be tuning in. I dont care who the guests are. though, i dont have a neilson box, so it doesnt matter if i watch or not anyways.

He was drawing 6M a night at 10pm, do you really think he is going to lose his crowd? His crowd went to 10pm with him from 11:35pm. They will go back there with him.
