Read what Artman said, because he is correct. No, QLED is not Samsung's OLED... but it was supposed to be.
Because they were going to try and go for a self-emitting technology, previously named 'QLED'.
The QLED name now is just a marketing ploy (I have a post somewhere that explains it), and has nothing to do with what they're hopefully going to bring out in the next 3-5 years. Since they've already invested so much R&D resource funds into it, I guess they're just going to continue with it or sometime abandon it. I hope they don't, because I'm looking forward to it.
But what they wanted to roll out with the QLED name two years ago has nothing to do with what they're calling QLED now. Think of it like... pretend like the Disney film Frozen was originally planned, and then they released a film called Frozen based on the three skiers trapped on the chairlift. Name is the same, result is not even close to similar. Now the real problem is I don't know what they're going to name the emissive technology QLED that they were attacking before.
Last I heard, they had trouble figuring out the lifespan of the blue-color QD materials for that technology. Don't know if that tech is readily available anytime soon, but I'm holding onto hope that it will rival OLED when ready, and possibly even be cheaper out the door to boot.
