Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

I think the biggest thing I underestimated was how much more fluid controls and movements are for characters. I tested out The Witcher 3 and Batman: Arkham City and they basically feel like completely different games. With Batman I kept getting tempted to just stare at the screen forgetting that I was controlling the acrobatic, fluid combat. Point and click fighting feels like cheating coming from a console.

It's going to take some time to get used to the WASD movement and I had been playing for a couple hours before I realized my finger placement was completely wrong, but I'm loving it so far. Haven't really had a chance to have a decent session yet since I spent most of the weekend setting up the computer, programs, and cleaning up my desk and computer area.

      What placement do you do?

      pinky- shift

      ring - a

      middle - w

      index - d

      thumb - space

I'll add to this for switching weapons or items on your number keys

        a/ring = 1
        w/middle = 2 & 3
        d/index = 4 & 5

        d/index = E (Lean or abilities)
        d/index = C (Crouch or Items)
        d/index = R (Reload)
        d/index = F (Action Key)
        d/Index = G (Grenades)
        a/ring = Z (Lay down or Items)
        a/ring = Q (Lean or Abilities)
        w/middle = X (Lay down or Items)
        shift/Pinky = LCTRL (Modifier)
        Space/Thumb = LALT (Modifier)

That should cover most of the standard movements and control scheme for your WASD hand.

          Awesome. That helps a lot.

I started off with the standard qwerty placement like typing class haha. I was having problems sprinting/crouching in Titan Fall2 and then realized my hand placement wasn't ideal.

I'm trying not to use a controller for a bit so I can get accustomed to KB and mouse. I'm basically used to doing forward/backward movements and using the camera perspective to turn from console playing. So a little adjustment with the WASD movements.

I did order an Xbox controller so I can play Xbox games. Gotta have some Forza time this weekend.

Hey guys, when I built my PC I only got a 256GB SSD. I am wanting to either replace it or buy an external SSD.

I just wanted to get opinions on if I should replace my M.2 drive, or keep it and buy an external and have three drives? I guess I'm really asking if external SSD's are reliable and work fine for gaming PC's.

External SSD is good enough. I personally would just replace my M.2 or just buy an internal SSD. You can fit a handful of SSDs inside of a PC case.

I'm glad I bumped mine up after getting advice from this thread. My SSD is already below half capacity.

I still need to fine tune and trouble shoot some parts of my setup including my storage management. Should be able to get that done this weekend and have plenty of time for games.

I'll try and remember to post some pictures too.

I'd just do an external SSD like GMSS mentioned.

My advice would be, don't build a PC just for that.

Agreed though it does also depend. I actually prefer running emulators on my pc than like the snes classic for instance.

You can get a raspberry pi to emulate most older generations of games, but when I looked into this a couple years ago I remember seeing that once you get into the n64 and ps2 generation that frame rate start to become a problem on some games.

You will probably want an i5 or equivalent cpu and something like a 1060 gpu (or older generation of the same mid range card) to ensure you can run anything. You could step down on both of those components slightly if you never plan on running some of the more demanding games. older games like ps1 Era don't need as much out of the gpu but ps2 and forward will make a difference.

When I got my Dell I’m glad I got the 512 GB hard drive. Probably going to expand another 500 GBs shortly. Forza 7 was 100 GBs just on its own.

More and more newer games coming in at 65 to 100gb. RDR2 was 100gb, COD was 100gb, The Division 2 and Breakpoint were both close to 100gb. Even Star Wars Fallen Jedi was close to 100gb.

I used to use the Logitech G810 keyboard but went the custom keyboard route a year ago. I can't use mass produced keyboards after spending time with my custom mech. The typing experience alone is worth it. Expensive hobby to get into though but there are alot of cheap options to be found if you look hard enough.

I recently upgraded to the Autonomous Ergo Chair 2 from a Arozzi gaming chair that I had for roughy three years. It's a really good ergonomic chair with loads of adjustability. I've never sat in a Herman Miller chair but the Ergo Chair 2 seemed like the budget version of the Herman Millers.
