The gangster rap from that era though was different. Ice Cube is one of the best storytellers of all time. He was very articulate, a great lyricist. And he lived the stuff he talked about.
But a lot of "guns, hoes, and drugs" rap today isn't done by great lyricists. It's simple lyrics, and it seems a lot of the people just say those things to sell records or to gain respect, they don't live it. (Some of them). But that's the main thing, the lyrics.
Ice Cube, Tupac, etc. did it in a different way. It was great lyrics and real rap. There was no gimmicks. But now people have horrible lyrics, horrible beats, and it's totally different.
Rap was more serious then. Pac, Biggie, Big L, all died over real beefs. Because if you were on top back then, everybody wanted to take you down. But today, everybody has a video. Everybody gets a ton of views. Everybody is doing rap. It's totally different. Beef doesn't even exist in rap anymore. It's a big deal today when somebody takes a shot at another rapper with 1 line in their song. Back when rap was more serious, you had other rappers shooting other rappers, whole songs dedicated to sleeping with somebody's girl, and a whole coast was feuding with a whole coast. Everybody knew if Biggie hopped on a plane headed to LAX, he would never step foot in Brooklyn again. And that's what happened. Rap today is too many little kids having success without any real talent. But that sells. But back in the day, it was grown *** men with real problems.
It was more serious. But today, with the help of the internet, everybody has a video. Everybody is making music. It's not the same anymore.
But opinions people disagree with: Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne, etc. being the greatest rappers alive. I hear people say "Oh Wiz and Wayne and Birdman are the best rappers. And Wiz, Wayne, and Birdman are the only 3 rappers they know. It's stupid.
