Re: IGN says PS3 might break you

Even just looking at how many people here have one vs how many have had problems the percentages probably work out to be closer to 10 than 3.
if you counted the people here with defective units, the number would probably settle between 10-15. That number is probably overestimating it. Again, hardly a blip. But since it's Microsoft the negative gets amplified.

Edit: I counted the number of people reporting defective consoles in the sticky up top, 10 people.

Majority? No chance. Maybe 20% by 2008 will have HDTV's.

One of the only intelligent, non-jerk posts I've read here in this topic. You people act like thos 10 people are out of the entire board. I'd go as far saying the number of people who have the 360s on this board doesn't even crack 100.

I enjoy the X-Box more than the PS2. I have both and for some reason I enjoy the Box more, whether it be games, graphics, controllers. Not to say PS2 isn't great in its own regards too. But you guys need to calm the hell down with some of these immature posts.

That could be just because of the small sample size or it could indicative of the greater whole. I point that out only because it looks like you're trying to argue that the 360 launch went flawlessly.

These topics about speculated PS3 price all end up the same. The 360 fanboys/anti-Sony posters are quick to believe an absurd price and then make their predictions of gloom and doom while the PS3 people downplay an outrageous price. No one knows, who cares?! Just wait and see. Last time I checked, nobody who posted here was an industry expert and could predict the price of a PS3 backed by anything more than a gut-instinct.

If you have a 360 and enjoy it, good for you. If you need to try and drag the Sony name through mud to make you enjoy it more then please refrain, because it's getting old. If you're eagerly anticipating the arrival of the PS3, also good, but portraying the 360 as a piece of junk isn't going to make the wait any shorter. I feel like I'm at an elementary school playground when I look at these topics sometimes.

Sounds like the voice of reason has spoken. Good post.

Find me a number that says that. Only like 60% of the US has cable TV in their house. I just don't see it being that high. I remember reading last year it was like 3% of US households have HDTV's.

It just seems that Sony has to realize that the ps3 just cannot sell over 700 dollars. I cant imagine their marketing department would say this is ok. I was going to get one, but my wife would kill me at the prices stated so far. I was willing to go up to around 450-500, but upwards to a grand is absurd. I still hear it from her about spending 400 on the 360.

Even if 5% of US had hdtvs, and then if only 3% of those with hdtvs bought a ps3, that would still constitute hundreds of thousands of ps3s sold. PS3s are not being marketed or priced for those that cant afford it, and those with hdtvs usually can afford something of this nature, but still, the prices being thrown around here are crazy.

The PS3 will sell HDTV or not. I never said it wouldn't. I'm not stupid. I know it'll be a great system and will sell millions of systems. I was only questioning the amount of HDTV's in homes.

                          Panasonic HDTV Interview
IGN speaks with VP Jeff Cove about all things HDTV. From the 103" plasma monster, to 1080p support, to Panasonic's vision of the future, it's all here.

IGN: How much have you followed the trends, say, from the conversion from analog to digital TVs, and then going HDTV. Is there a big up-rise of people buying these sets that will continue to grow as analog sets decrease?

Jeff Cove: HD is exploding. What is interesting is that there are two big drivers to this huge growth of HD. One is that there is more content available, and secondly, flat-panel. Flat-panel is doing a lot to help HD grow. We are expecting that by the end of 2006, a quarter of all homes will have at least an HD-Ready set. That's a big change, and should give you a good idea of how much HD is getting sold.

IGN: That's fantastic. Do you have any projections for farther out, say 2007 or 2008?

Jeff Cove: I think that by the end of 2008 about half of the homes are going to have HD-ready sets. So the growth rate is really just phenomenal. I'm not exactly sure where the cross-over point is where more HD is going to be sold than non-HD, but it certainly is coming in the next couple of years.

IGN: You can certainly see that happening. At most major retailers all you see it HD, and you have to go into the back to find any of the old stuff.

Jeff Cove: One of the studies that we did here…These sets aren't cheap. A couple thousand dollars isn't pocket change. However, this whole idea of HD and flat-panel is revolutionary. The last time there was a revolution like this in the TV business was the switch from black-and-white to color. I mean, it's been a long time. So, the first big year for color television was 1965, and the point is, in those days, color TVs cost between five hundred and seven hundred dollars. Households were investing a lot of money in 1965 dollars. If you convert that to today's money, you're well over two-thousand dollars. It's the same kind of price point and explosion that is happening in this switch to HD.

I agree with him. And I cannot wait for this 65" inch Plasma from Panasonic. It's the HDTV I've been holding out for. So excited! I think this was a great interview, I recommend reading it.

800 bucks retail means about 1200 bucks ebay. Wooot!!! I'm pre-ordering at least 4.

If indeed the PS3 drops at anything over 700.00, I will honestly feel sorry for the people who waited an entire extra year for the next-gen just to happily overpay for a marginally better system with an inferior on-line infrastructure.

No way do casual customers touch that price even at 600 bucks. They'll either wait until it goes down or cop a reduced 360...I'm thinking that 360's second gen will at least look just as impressive as PS3's first. "Hey..but it's got a Blue Ray!" isn't going to be a significant selling point to average Joe with his 100+ DVD selection already at home.

Maybe Sony's plan is to gouge the early adopters and faithful hardcore supporters for a year or so with the 800.00 tag, and then drop the price a ton once the term "Blue-Ray" actually means something to the casual consumer. That insane price would reduce demand (thus reducing the inevitable shortages) and help recoup some of the lauch dough...then once the systems are in good supply and the components are cheaper, they'll drop the price, making the masses think they're getting a fantastic deal at 500.00 bucks. Very likely.

Sucks to be the average Joe then.

I'll have my PS3 in 1080p on my Panasonic 65" Plasma and enjoying Blu-Ray.

I just bought a PS2 again.. That should last me a long time, seeing that I don't game much anymore.

Paying $600-1000 for a system is just ridiculous IMO. Might as well just buy a new PC or upgrade a current one if you are going to spend that much money.
