However, I'd be somewhat concerned if I was to buy a PS3 while Harrison made that statement. If Blu-Ray is all Sony says it's cracked up to be then they should be backing it 110%. Isn't it supposed to replace the DVD? So, if it is gone in '5 years or so', according to Sony, then why such a major stake in Blu-Ray now?
It seems their whole organization is in complete disarray.Comment

Originally posted by RodsterExactly and BR is the reason this machine is $300 than the PS2. Gamers are being asked to fork over alot more money this time around for something that might be absolete when the next system is rolled out.
That is one reason why I'm turned off by the PS3. Granted I was one of the people that wanted to get one back during E3, but after that price I decided it's a no for me. I might pickup the Wii depending on how finances are in the fall, but I think that Sony has really backed themselves into a corner here with so much at stake on the Blu-Ray.
Already, many reviewers have said HD-DVD is beating Blu-Ray via picture and sound quality when 2 movies that are on both formats have been reviewed. When your looking at the HD era of DVD's, as a consumer I can buy the $500 HD-DVD over the $1,000 BR player and get better quality all around.Comment

My faith isn't unshakeable in this machine. I think the price might scare people away but I don't look at the PS3 through Microsoft goggles. The machine's price just looks scary because its listed $200 higher than a 360 but you pay for basically the same thing (wireless adapter, extra 20 gigs of HD space, Blu Ray player) as if you were buying a 360. If they feel like Blu Ray will be a success then they won't need it in a PS4 since the PS3 is here to establish Blu Ray (and yes, I'd say that's its primary goal above giving the consumer a gaming machine) and they likely assume that their machine will be a success and every consumer come 2011 will already have Blu Ray. That's their assumption, I'm not saying their reality. The major way Sony will screw up the PS3 is if their software is priced higher than 360, otherwise I don't expect their sales to fall below Microsoft's because they still hold market share.
Though you make too many assumptions. We've had discussions in the past on who's buying what and I'm on record as not being a Playstation 3 supporter. I have zero interest in this console as of right now. I just find the doom and gloom predictions all around this board amusing and I can't always ignore them.Last edited by Misfit; 08-09-2006, 11:06 AM.Comment

Re: Playstation 3 Information, hardware, games discussion Part II
I think Harrison is simply commenting on what digital media will become in time. Right now we have the huge popularity of digital music that has been established, what not to expect but the same with movies. Broadband has already gotten beyond what we see in the US in Japan. Hardrives are bigger than ever, and storage is smaller than ever.
That being said, it's kind of a bad idea to comment on the future PS4 when your PS3 hasn't even been released yet. Even more, comment on how your soon to be released technology will be excluded from future projects.Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.Comment

Sony's Harrison: 'Amazed' if PS4 Has a Disc Drive
What about these Blu-Ray discs, then?

This just in: Blu-Ray is dead.
Pardon the hyperbole, but with senior Sony executives speculating that the PS4 (yes, you read that right) may not use a disc format as the company is at the cusp of rolling out future proof technology, it's not exactly a ringing endorsement of the proprietary disc format's staying power.
Phil Harrison told Wired that he would be "amazed if the PS4 has a physical disk drive." In fairness, Harrison was talking about the emergence of electronic distribution (something Sony's mastermind Ken Kutaragi has championed previously), but that doesn't change the back-handed slap to the Blu-ray format.
The likelihood of being done with disc media after this console cycle (yes, the one that is about to finally begin sometime this fall) seems a bit much -- the feasibility of downloading complete experiences like Halo 3 is severely limited by Internet availability and access.
When the hell is PS4 coming out? PS3 ain't even out yet???
Some info you just have to disregard.
Seriously. PS4? Can you say 5 years from now?

Re: Playstation 3 Information, hardware, games discussion Part II
Originally posted by SpongedaddyI am taking a wait and see approach with the PS3. However, it seems strange that they would talk about their next machine not having BR. It's one thing for a new game machine in five years, it's another to introduce a new media format and not push it for the long run. The next wave of machines will probably be digital distribution....but why introduce BR then only to change formats five years down the road?Comment

Re: Playstation 3 Information, hardware, games discussion Part II
OK There's one thing I don't understand with about that logic.
Why does PS4 need a BluRay drive? I mean in 5 years MANY people will have a PS3, so that means that many people PLUS those out there that will buy a standalone player will have a Blu-Ray player. So, why would Sony 1. waste money putting a Bluray drive in the next machine, and 2. Drive of the price of the next machine by adding a blu-ray drive.
???
I gotta ask it again...
Why would Sony add a Blu-Ray drive to PS4 when people will already have one??? Look how many people have a PS2! Once PS3 drops lower in price, it'll get to the level of PS2 in sales. I mean look at the potential of the machine!
In 5 years, Blu ray wouldn't need PS4's support. It will have either flopped or blew up.Xbox 360 GamertagRAW 910

If Sony really felt like their Blu Ray player was doomed at this point they wouldn't release it, plain and simple. The topic is moot anyways since the success of the PS3 is not dependent on the success of Blu Ray, but the other way around. And I myself am skepticle of Blu Ray's (and HD-DVD's, for that mater) staying power since I don't get a sense of consumer outcry for a superior medium to view movies and such on. The only way I feel that Blu Ray succeeds is if people who buy a PS3 support it. The early returns on Blu Ray isn't favorable but take a look at the first DVD's. They contained poor picture quality compared with the titles we have today and many were dual layered (I bet no one misses those DVD's). If PS3 owners do not buy Blu Ray discs or if the PS3 is a huge flop all together then Blu Ray will likely follow the path of Beta Max.Comment
