Re: HELP! My 360 just died... what can I do?

There are actually two different kinds of service plans available at Best Buy. There's the PRP (Product Replacement Plan) for smaller ticket items, and there's the PSP (Performance Service Plan) for larger ticket items.

The PRP is sold on any video game consoles, DVD players, stuff like that. With the PRP, once you get an item replaced once, that's it.

The PSP is sold on TV's, PC's, appliances, stereos, stuff like that. Most PSP's last 3 years, although some last 4. With the PSP, if you have to get an item replaced, you are able to continue having the benefits of what you originally bought, including any repairs or replacements, through out the life of the original plan.

So...if I buy a PC today, along with a PSP, and in a year and a half, lightning fries it and I need to replace it, they replace it. If 6 months later, it gets hit by lightning again, they replace it again.

But with the PRP, if my XBox breaks and I go in and get it replaced, that's it. I can buy a NEW PRP with the XBox, but he original one gets "used up" by the one replacement.

BTW - I worked at Best Buy for a couple of years while I was in college.

No, they'll try to fix it first. They will only replace it if it has the exact same issue four times.

Read the policy that they gave you. Don't go by what the sales rep tells you.

Best Buy has great customer service. A year ago, my CPU just turned off, and they didnt know what the problem was. Since they didn't have the same exact one, they actually upgraded mine, so I went home with a better computer. I would definatly suggest their warranty.

Best Buy doesn't really have great or bad customer service since all of those transactions are at the manager's discretion. Unless you know the manager, you can only expect them to go as far as the written policy says and not accomodate you any further.

I'm not anti-BB or anything...I'm a RewardZone member and I go there first before any other physical retail stores. I just read the complaints at www.bestbuysux.org because they make me laugh.

I agree that you should get their extended warranty with any game system purchase. It's not so important with other purchases.

The system did cost like $400, so yeah, I wouldn't complain about having to buy a warranty for it. Especially if you already heard about the numerous problems people were having with the product.

You shouldn't gamble when spending that much money on something like that. If you aren't happy about buying the extended warranty for a product that was known for having problems , then you shouldn't have bought it in the first place. Because that's alot of money to throw away.

Yeah I know they try to repair it before replacing it. Almost all companies do that.

Re: HELP! My 360 just died... what can I do?

I'll probably be buying a 360 soon and am also tempted to dish out the extra cash for the extended warranty.

For high price electronics (ie. TV), I usually don't bite, but for the 360 it seems as if you only have to spend about an extra 10% to be covered. In the end, I will definitely not miss the $50.

Different case if you are talking about a TV. Just bought a sharp 37" and they wanted about $600 for the 4 year warranty. No way I'm spending 25% extra just for the warranty.

But I also agree with people who can't afford the extra $50 and don't think that Microsoft should be selling a product that breaks down more often than what we would call "acceptable". If there are tonnes of cases of known problems, then there is obviously an issue with production.

Who's "they"? Where'd you get that TV from? I know that at Best Buy, the cost of a PSP for a TV is nowhere near that, not even for the high priced plasma screens.

Yeah $600 sounds extremely high. I would say $200 or so tops for a warranty.

"They" is Best Buy here in Canada. Obviously, prices are a bit different from U.S., but it worked out like this- TV- $2699 4 year warranty $599.

You make it sound like you'd "throw away" $400 if your 360 broke down after warranty. Repairs are around $130 when the warranty is over. Unless you have multiple failures, your potential loss is much less than $400. Many people fall into the trap of thinking they'll lose their product and all the money they spent entirely if there is a problem, which is almost never the case.

Did the TV cost $10,000 or something, that's too high for a warranty.
