Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
You should hear a beeping noise, so roll away and the grenade will go off.
HOWEVER, (Say it like Stephen A.) you need the explosive grenades in order to make them explode. If you do it with a smoke they just have a smoke trail following them.Comment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
Just to echo the latest sentiments concerning GoW, this game is a knockout. I'm slowly (damn slowly) getting used to the controls. As I am figuring out the subtle mechanics of the game, I am really enjoying it more and more. The "blind shot" from cover is a great touch, and the cover system really makes this game stand out from many FPS shooters I have played. The presentation is wonderful, I really feel like I'm apart of something epic here, although im not quite sure what it is yet.
The learning curve has been unusually steep for me, considering that I have played my fair share of shooters, but I am sticking with it and really beginning to enjoy this game. Once I get my xbox live up and running, I am sure I will be logging MANY multiplayer hours with this game. I'm just glad I have a four-day weekend to really get into this game.
BTW: I think the first time I got a chainsaw kill was one of my greater moments in my gaming history. Oh the bloodspray!Comment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
To be honest, I'm up to third act (The Long Road Home: hazing) and while I was very impressed initially, looking back on this game, it's not a game that's groundbreaking or anything. Don't get me wrong, I love this game, but there's some truth to the EA article. This game feels like a Halo/Doom ripoff(the same sentiments I echoed before this game came out nor before I acquired X360.) I'm very disapointed by the enemies, especially the little buggers who remind you of the Halo's little alien creatures. What this game got going for it are some truly great cinematics and graphics, but then again what game using the Unreal engine wouldn't produce great graphics? It's the first FPS created game by Microsoft besides Halo to premiere on X360, so I'm guessing that's the answer for all the hype?Last edited by AI_Franchise; 11-11-2006, 03:33 AM.Comment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
Calling Gears a halo/doom rip off isn't at all accurate...
What does everyone think Ressistance Fall of Man is???
HALO and Ressitance are ripping off HALF LIFE. Period. It's a sci-fi shooter. Half Life did it first and still probably did it best.

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
now it's time to gripe.
Every time I've played this game it's froze up on me. So, I figure maybe it's my system... I then sat on Viva Pinata for 2hrs... then sat on Call of Duty 3 for another hour and half. NOTHING...NADDA...ZIPPO.
It's really agravating to have it lock and freeze the whole damn time.BeyondMediaOnline.comComment

Personally, I think the cover system is excellent. There is nothing like playing a multiplayer game and linking cover moves together like it's Tekken to get to an enemy. THen to stuff them with a grenade and roll away is always a great accomplishment.Comment

No GOW is not groundbreaking, but it is one hell of a package that was very well done. I like the SP very much and MP has been nothing but fun with no lag or issues so far on my end.
Too bad your not enjoying GOW.

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
I agree. I'm not sure where this idea came from that a game has to introduce some new concept to be considered great. As much as I love Halo, if people are going to make that distinction then Halo is nothing more than a different take on FPS's that came before it (imo). The last truly innovative game was Mario 64, which was the first game to masterfully implement manipulating a character in 3D space - at least I think. This "Gears isn't innovative" argument doesn't make sense to me. The fact that it was so heavily hyped, and has mostly lived up to and in many cases surpassed what was expected of it is why it's getting the praise it is (and much deserves - I love this game)HBO's "The Wire" should rank as one of the top 10 shows EVER on tv - period
