Same here. Although I know I'll have Fable day 1 I don't have the same excitement for it as I do Fallout 3. I loved Oblivion and if Fallout3 gives me the same enjoyment and the same amount of play time then I'm set.

Didn't see it mentioned on here, but any PS3 owners, check out the new episode of Qore. They had a bunch of stuff about Fallout.

I think most opinions will be the complete opposite of this, but it's still an interesting read.

Some interesting points, specially with the clothes changing your attributes.

I think a lot of similar points were made about Oblivion and how it wasn't a true rpg and didn't live up to the previous TES games, but people still managed to enjoy it. If it's not that good, I guess that means more time to play fable 2.

Yeah, and I still stand by my comment that those that enjoyed Oblivion will enjoy Fallout 3. Longtime Fallout fans are going to be the toughest to please, they pretty much had their minds made up that the game was to be **** upon the game being announced and that Bethesda was doing it.

He sounds like a pissed off former BlackIsle employee who's player hating on Bethesda's interpretation of the Fallout universe. Theres saltyness in every sentence he wrote. Not a fair assesment at all.

Dude was pissed off because they screened the screenshots he took.

I agree with you completely. I am not a longtime fallout fan, but I've gotten them to check it out and I really don't see what they can be so picky about. The games are not 'modern era' so complaining about camera would be idiotic imo - I'm sure the original dev's wouldn't have gone w/ isometric style confined spaces (to allow the next ones to load) either given today's technology. Also the atmosphere was pretty limited too.
The diologue isn't that amazing either so I don't get those complaints - yes some of it is really cool but alot of it is goofy filler.
The combat is Ok (at times), but I don't see why someone would RATHER it to Bethesda's style, especially since you can use VATS. I don't htink combat must be turn-based to make it RPG at all, in fact when you can see your skills increase in real time it's more satisfying to me - like in oblivion my character got so athletic that I could really feel the difference in running and jumping and it was satisfying.
Imagine of making a remake of Great Baseball for the mastersystem, or remaking wonder boy in monster land - if they are going to be retail releases, they will play like modern games, if the fallout guys want the same game, either lobby for an xbla release (sequel or otherwise) - because that game is simply not acceptable as a 60 release now.

In short though, you're right. There are people who just don't WANT to like the game no matter what, because they are the only connoiseur's, and nobody else can have an opinion of how the game 'should' be except for them.

All info below is taken from OXM.

                        Fallout 3 OXM review:

                        10 out of 10
+ A genuinely compelling story that you want to follow.
+ Massive, rich world that you'll explore for a loooong time.
                        + Intense, challenging combat.
                        ? Can someone make a real-life Pib-Boy? That'd kick some iPhone ***.

                        The Final Ink Spots:

By now, you've probably noticed that we're giving Fallout 3 a big ol' score, so in the interests of quelling any outcry - no, this game in not perfect. In particular, we really wish that Bethesda had worked more on the dialogue system. In this post-Mass Effect era, it's disappointing not to hear yourself talk and to have to pick your dialogue options from big blobs of text. Other quibbles: NPC chatter often overlaps in a confused tangle, the third-person view is more than a bit crap, and we were always bummed that in such an otherwise-detailed world, no one noticed the corpses of their friends who we'd just stealthily killed. The biggest annoyance, though, is not being able to fast-travel unless you're outside-commuting sucks enough in real life, so we really resent it in our game!

But those points really are quibbles at worst. Our 40-ish hours of game time over four days at Bethesda's Maryland HQ went by on fast-forward. We often forgot to eat, and we begrudged bathroom breaks. Games this captivating don't come along often often. Between its engrossing story, ginormous world, well-crafted RPG side, and white-knuckle FPS combat, Fallout 3 completely, utterly gives you your $60 worth.

We prepared a geeky list of all the small little upgrades between the two games that made us oh-so-happy while playing Fallout 3:

*Load times and save times are much faster, and those hiccups where the game pauses to load the next chuck of world are rare.
*You can buy and sell any item at any store in one transaction.
*Waiting works better. When you change the time, people are right where they should be, instead of running over from where they were.
*Hugely better voice acting with tons more actors in the cast. You'll hear some Oblivion voices you know all too well...just not on every other NPC.
*Map is smarter and more informative.
*Lockpicking mini-game is such easier to master.
*Five difficulty levels instead of an overly granular slider.
*Keys are hidden on a ring, rather than clogging up your inventory.
*Tone is less "Forsooth, my liege!"
and more adult-drugs, hookers, addiction, and heaps of gore abound.

****Another departure from Oblivion, enemies don't level up with you-they're preset. So as a Level 3, you can get pounded by a Level 8 mutant if you stick your nose in the wrong hole. But if you retreat, grind up to a Level 10, and return, you can slay them all blindfolded.****

Hey no problem, I am just copying the wonder review OXM had. I had to share some info.

I continued reading and found this to be really interesting:

                            Game Over:

Its important to point out, though, that this game does end. Unlike Oblivion, which you can play indefinitely after completing the main story, Fallout 3 is over when it's over. So before you embark on what's clearly the final Quest, make sure you've wrapped up everything you care about. Also, be dillegent about saving (you can save anywhere and as often as you like)-you'll inevitably want to go back and retry a few things.

You also may have heard that the game has "thousands" of different endings, and while that's perhaps technically true, it's the ending of the story that delivers the big, worthwhile payout. The final cinematic and its many variations are nothing special, and from your last save, you can check out three or four versions of it. But only a rare few will replay the game in enough different ways to see more than that.

                            Elite Skills:

As a toddler in the Vault, you set your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. ratings (strength, intelligence, and so on). Choose wisely because they're difficult to change subsequently, and they drive your skill settings in catagories like big guns, lock picking, medicine, science, speech, barter, and lots more. Every time you level up, you add points to those skills and pick a new perk, which is easily the highlight of the game's RPG side.

Perks rock. They feel a bit BioShock-y in their craziness (or perhaps it's more fair to say that BioShock's plasmids felt Fallout-y), and they're great wild cars that veer from practical boosts like carrying more stuff or upgrading skills to more dialogue options with kids, a lead belly that tolerates irradiated food, or making kills splater bloody goop everywhere. Our favorite was Mysterious Stranger, which randomly summons a ally dressed like a '50s noir detective...who puts a pistol to your opponent's head and blam! Since it isn't possible to earn every perk, you'll spend alot of time pleasantly agonizing over your next pick.

It's a rich RPG system that pays off nicely as you build your skills to the point where you can finally pop some super mutants like they're gerbils, but it does offer fewer play-style options than Oblivion. There's plenty of diversity in your secondary skills; you can choose to focus on stealth, thieving, or just plain charming NPCs into obedience. But Fallout 3 is also an FPS, so you have to beef up your Combat Skills even if you'd prefer to be a pacifist cleric.

                            Raider:

Wondering about downloadable content? It's coming! Bethesda plans a hanful of smaller adventures that are roughly Knights of the Nine sze. They're hoping-but not promising-to release the first in late December.

I cant say I like the idea of the game ending and not being able to go back, but that is just one complaint for me. And Knights of the Nine sixed downloads are always a plus.
