You missed the best game of this generation of consoles.

Oh, how I would give anything to be able to go back and play this for the first time.

Yeah, as a longtime fan of Westerns (everything from classic John Ford to the spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone), I had been waiting for a game like this to come out forever. It nailed every aspect of the Western genre so perfectly, I would say that this was the best game of this console generation by a wide margin. I'm actually a lot less hyped for GTAV than I was for this game (especially after that first trailer for RDR came out...it looked so ridiculously awesome, and it actually exceeded the hype). I liked this game so much, this is the only game I've ever 100% completed (yes, including picking all the stupid flowers...).

Just spending time loping around on your horse, seeing the landscape, getting into minor mischief...honestly, a more perfect game (for me) might never come out.

Yeah I know. I was never into shoot em ups. But this seems like it's so much more than that.

Been watching vids on YT and wow, it just looks so awesome! And the fact I can bypass missions and just explore the world is what convinced me.

Oh, and imagine how much more sweet it would be on the new systems coming out!

This game is one of the few I've ever completed 100% as well. But I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum - I had little interest in Westerns prior to playing Red Dead Redemption. I still can't say I love the film genre, but it certainly opened my eyes and helped me notice and appreciate everything that's out there.

Also, like you said, half the fun of this game is everything outside of the main missions. I was thinking about that since AshamanCarnage mentioned he was working his way through. I don't know how he played the game, but if someone picks this one up and just goes mission to mission to mission, they're kind of missing a very, very large portion of its scope. The strangers, the hunting, the gang hideouts, the trains, the waterfalls, the cougar attacks, the hidden treasure, the horse breaking, the sunsets, the serenity... it's all pretty incredible.

I started out like that at first, the hunting and sharpshooting mission. I even got addicted to poker for a little bit. Halfway through Mexico though, after I completed a mission I was just like "Jesus this is never-ending."

However, after you leave Mexico I felt like the new area gave the game a fresh breath of life.

I never felt like that, but I have heard a lot of people felt the Mexico section of the game (approximately the middle 1/3 of the game) dragged a bit. I liked that section the best, though - very Clint Eastwood/Sergio Leone, and very moody.

Definitely...that 3rd act of the game really brings the stark contrast between the dying Old West and the modern world to light. The game was just beautiful on so many levels. I feel like a PR guy for Rockstar or something, but in my opinion, there was just about nothing wrong with that game whatsoever.

I still love it. And I appreciate Mexico, but I admit it's likely my least favorite portion of the game. Everything feels so far away on subsequent playthroughs (though I was thoroughly transfixed my first few times in the country).

It's tough to find any issue with the game but if I had to be an absolute stickler, an ability to interact with the water would have been outstanding. I understand not being able to swim, but canoeing, boating, or rafting (aside from the Mexico intro mission) certainly would have added another layer. But I mean, there's already approximately 3,422 layers to that game already, so what's one more?

                    Re: Red Dead Redemption

All the hype and rage is for GTA 5. But I'll be honest---- the thought of being an outlaw cowboy excites me more than being a modern day thug, if that makes any sense.

I saw at my local GameStop, the Game of the Year edition for $30 bucks. (Includes Undead Nightmare)

Think I'll pick it up after I recover from my bad cold.

*Edit* Got it yesterday. My gosh time goes by fast with this game!! Before I knew it, I'd logged about 4 hours yesterday alone! I knew I was in trouble when it took me an hour to do the horse-breaking mission, lol!

But I did manage to take out the gang, so I'm better at shooting bad guys than lasso-ing wild stallions....

And what I like is you never know what's next. Example: Riding to Armadillo by myself, I pass something going on, hear "Hey don't just pass by, do something!" and get shot at by 3 or 4 guys, getting killed in the process. Didn't even see that on the map; must've stumbled onto something I wasn't supposed to!

Again I ask myself, why'd I wait so long to get this!?

                      Re: Red Dead Redemption

Im only several hours into GTA V but I have to admit, I keep comparing it to red dead. And while there are many similarities (most are improvements) there are some things that didn't make it into GTA. One of the biggest things I loved from red dead was looting bodies and having an inventory. It was cool picking up different items and being able to use/sell them. It made it seem like every person I killed was different and worth something. In GTA V I find myself going over dead bodies and hitting y hoping to find something hidden away in their pockets but their bodies just lay there like meaningless gang members (I also try to skin animals too lol). That sort of RPG element is missing from GTA V and it makes killing not feel as rewarding.

Another thing that i found different are the random events. If it wasn't for my radar flashing to indicate there is one happening, i probably wouldnt notice. The pace of red dead was much slower so you could easily see what was going on around you. GTA V is much more fast paced (mostly driving around in fast cars, weeving through traffic and getting to a check point as fast as i can). I find myself having to force myself to slow down and enjoy the beautiful world rockstar has built but the experience doesn't seem as organic.

GTA V does some absolutely amazing things. The missions are extremely addicting and the way heists are put together may be the most fun ive had playing video games since i can remember, but if i had to chose right now, i think i would put red dead ahead of gta v as my fav game this gen.

I've found myself doing that too. I tried several times before realizing it wasn't the same kind of deal as RDR. The loot would already be lying next to the body. Yeah it's like previous GTA games but I had gotten so used to looting in RDR it was a hard habit to break.

Maybe because it's the Old West(anything goes) vs Modern Day?

I'll admit it, I did try to skin a deer i hit with a car in V.

Getting back into Red Dead, never beat it but put 70 hours or so into it.
Gonna start fresh on hardcore mode. Which was a killer last i tried.

Going through the game to completion is totally worth it.

Have yet to get my hands on GTA V so I'll withhold judgment, but RDR is going to be tough to beat...

Totally. Same here. And as others said, when I found I couldn't skin it, I was kind of like, "Well, now what?" The incentive for freestyle hunting isn't there in GTA V.
