This is in the news right now and it might get you in the mood to play X-com.

Like I said before, I completely lost South America. Right now I'm a tad behind where Russell is and I have satellites on all the remaining countries with 1 bar of panic across the board. I'm sure they'll throw me an impossible terror mission pretty soon to screw that up, though. The last one they gave me somehow didn't have any chrysalids in it. Just what seemed to be an endless stream of various Mutons and Heavy Floaters. I managed to save 9/18 civilians even though I basically didn't move from the spot I started. The bastards pinned me down early.

A couple things I've learned after getting through the alien base.

1 - When the enemy first discovers you, they must eat overwatch. If they surprise you, you might be good as toast, and you miss what is probably your only real advantage in this game. This makes for some long battles, but you really have to proceed with caution and try to limit the number of enemies you face at once as much as you can.

2 - Always assume that 2 Sectoid Commanders are going to show up on your next turn. Have a plan to deal with them immediately - I have and will eschew cover for a soldier or two if it means clearing the immediate vicinity of these ****ers.

I D/L'd the demo last night and will try it tonight.
Is it close to the retail version?

It gives you a feel for the turn-based nature and some of the base stuff, yeah. It's simple and mostly scripted though, where the retail is not (though there is a tutorial which is basically like an extended version of the demo).

Basically, if you like the demo, you'll LOVE the retail.

I really enjoyed the demo. But I'm not sure I'm going to buy it.
This is a game that deserves a lot of time spent and I don't think I have that kind of spare time.
It took me 2 months to finish Sleeping Dogs, haha. But that's what happens when you only have about 2-5 hours a week for gaming.

I might pick it up when it's gone on sale though. I can see what people are referring to as far as depth and strategy. Very, very cool game.

I currently just activated the first "story movie" where the commander is talking about the aliens changing their tactics and attacking cities. They hit me with 3 floaters, 4 sectoids, and couple thin men I believe.

I am praying I get some engineers at the end of this month review. I need to build some satellites BADLY!!
I just beat the game on normal Iron man. I lost three total countries and now its time to start my Classic Iron man play through all in all normal was a little easy if your tactics are sound. I lost a total of 16 soldiers and 6 of them where Col. I killed 767 total aliens.

                  Even on normal that's impressive.

Is a squad of 6 the most personnel you can take into a mission? The perks in the Combat Training school seem to suggest so as do the silhouettes when choosing the squad. I have five slots open.

With only 6 slots to fill how are most of you heading into battle? What line up do you use? How many snipers do you take, support, etc? What are some good tips on choosing personnel. Does the mission types effect your decisions?

With only 5 slots open taking 2 snipers into a mission is a big commitment. But with 6 slots to fill I can see the value of using an additional long range specialist.

Take this load out with a huge grain of salt cause I suck at this game. I run a heavy w/ SCOPE, 2 assault w/grenade, a sniper w/SCOPE, and 2 support w/med kit.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

You are a commando Russell. I have really been getting my *** handed to me on normal.

But I am not very experienced in tactical strategy games so there is a learning curve I am going through. But it is making this game a real challenge and a lot of fun.

To those that are struggling I highly suggest picking up the strategy guide. I have been reading through it and there is a ton of valuable information and tactics you can use. Plus it is a great read and get's you even more into the different types of aliens, weapons, tech and base building strategies you could employ.

I felt a little blind so it helped a lot.

I take a sniper with a scope and skeleton armor, a support with medkit, a hover shiv and then depending on the mission either 2 assault and a heavy or three assaults. I like to stay mobile and the a three man assault team with a shiv and an elevated sniper can be a murder swarm.

I have yet to lose a solider on Normal. I can feel the pain now when one finally does go down, because I have been operating like a sound machine in the field.
