    Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Man I love that shredder rocket.

I love blowing **** up in this game......sorry but survival takes precedent over artifacts. Screw science....this is war.

    LOL.

Anyway I finally built my Alien Containment facility, and have my third uplink almost done (and doing the adjancent bonus) also have my first thermal generator being built.

As you can see I have been moving slow (this is my third play through after really being overwhelmed) and reading the excellent guide helped me understand what and what not to do early on. I am doing research at a much slower pace, building up my troops and launching satellites all over the map. I could research Skeleton armor but have held off as I am kicking all kinds of ***.

    Playing on Normal.
My next play through will be Normal Ironman.

I am seeing Mutons and Cyberdiscs as well as drones (which all have had an autopsy).

I am reading all my research reports etc and just taking in the game and really role playing it out.

    GOTY.

Got the full version from Greenman Gaming, 5 bucks off and I now have 10 bucks in credit there for future DLC maybe.

Just 1 mission in after the first 2 tutorial type missions...this is amazing. Haven't lost anyone yet, but it'll happen. I think I'm moving too fast during battles, but I'm sure a few surprise aliens will cure me of that problem.

Decided to play my normal/Ironman play through after coming back from having a few brews.

          That was a bad idea.

Did the demo do the retail release any justice? This thread has peaked my interest and the last strategy game I tried was Advance Wars on the GBA handheld.

                  Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

                  Yeah....
I had a UFO landed mission last night and got caught badly in two ways
-1. I didn't bring at least one low ranking support/assault guy as a "scout"
-2. When I did get caught by surprise and flanked badly......I didn't use the "hunker down" for my guys in the worst spots and cover them with overwatch from the others...so I lost my two best assault team members.

In the immortal words that I hear way too much from my squad members....
                  ..."that is NOT good"....

-side note....not giving the snipers the shoot after movement perk really, really hinders them in combat. Not getting them the plasma sniper rifle ASAP is also a mistake.

An overwatch squad sight sniper is amazing. I used Snap Shot (being able to move and shoot) perk on my first run through, but this playthrough I switched it up and she has been my second best character (besides the Heavy I got at beginning of tutorial)
With Double tap too + Headshot & the Plasma Sniper Rifle, she can generally take out a Sectopod with some luck by herself.

                      True...
But also......if you can't move to new cover and shoot.....having a heavy floater suddenly show up behind your sniper or they are just slightly out of range for shooting...renders them pretty useless for at least a turn.

Obviously there is no set...best tactic....I guess it also depends on how you set up your play.

Man, I thought once I took down that overseer ship and killed that ethereal inside the game was going to be over. There's more??? I lost 3 of my best squad members because of that ethereal. I don't know if my squad, or tactics, even on easy will be good enough to win this game.

Do you have the best armor/weapons for your soldiers? I'm on that stage as well, but I have 6 Colonels (2 assault, 2 heavy, 1 support & 1 sniper). If you feel you are ready, go for the mission. If not just wait and train more of your troops to get better armor/weapons.

I do have the best weapons and armor but I only have 2 colonels. I decided to skip the battleship and just keep training my guys. Really that's all there is left to do. I've pretty much done everything else. I wouldn't mind having 6 colonels heading into that final battle though. Plus maybe I can keep working on my tactics. I want to crank up the difficulty on the next game.
