Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in

Well I just got back from the gym and I knocked out 612 calories in about 45 minutes on the elliptical. I busted my @ss on that thing! My shirt was drenched.

Now i'm eating a Livesmart Chicken meal (370), with watermelon (150) and a cheese snack (50) so i'm up to about 1,000 calories already today

I'll do a very light dinner, probably some lettuce with turkey and mustard and I also have to mow the lawn tonight so I think i should be ok.

Dragging through the day, my friend. Today was rough... no energy. I'm over the cold so I'm going to suck it up and try the gym tonight when I get home.

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in

I'm on the road with work again so haven't been able to weigh in at all this week yet. I've been very healthy though and feeling good.

For a cardio workout i always loved the rowing machine. 10 mins on that thing and i am drenched in sweat and it works the whole body. OD you may already be at 1000 but you said your self you burnt 600 so you are only up to 400 which is nothing.

Has anyone else read the Eat Stop Eat ebook Tha_Kid was talking about? Some really interesting info in it that basically flies in the face of a lot of the modern nutritional beliefs that are spouted as gospel but aren't actually based on science.

FWIW when I was working out in the military I always did 10 mins stretching, 30 mins cardio, 30 mins lifting (including weighted crunches daily), 20 mins cardio, 10 mins stretching.....I was always paranoid of my weight because I wrestled in HS so I wanted to ensure I could gain the muscle I needed without adding any more size/weight then absolutely necessary.
Pretty sure I don't have it wrong. But whatever works for you.

Scientifically speaking, it is more efficient to lift first. Look up muscle fatigue. Any trainer that knows his stuff would tell you that as well. But I don't want to dwell on this.

@ODogg and the rest of you 1200 calorie and under dudes, I won't say anything else. I just will pray for you.

I have a stupid question..is beef jerky good for you? I also want to lose some weight as I've gotten heavier the past year. I don't have access to a oven or anything and only have a microwave in my current barracks room. I eat beef jerky all the time because it is low carb, high protein and well it taste great.

But it comes in a bag that I can buy at 7-11 for $2 so I'm not sure if I should be eating it a lot.

              The kind I eat has

              130 calories

              4 grams of fat

              10 grams of carb

              14 grams of protein

It is high in sodium and cholesterol but I'm not worried about my cholesterol at this point in time.

I've eaten pretty bad on the ECA stack so far...thanks Easter! I'm only at like 215-216...which is incredible.

My appetite is definitely lower on this stack. Tomorrow I get back to the diet...

I just have junk thrown in my face all day with no healthy options and if I turn it down I get a bunch of crap. I hate how food is such a big deal. Just let me eat what I want!

It's so high in sodium but other than that it's ok.

For what it's worth i average between 1500-2000 cals per day but do intermittent fasting.

I have been getting into this fasting thing and the more i read about it the more i think it's the best way for me going forward. Some benefits of fasting include:

In dozens of published peer reviewed scientific studies, short-term intermittent fasting has been found to have the following health benefits:
                      • Decreased body fat & body weight
                      • Maintenance of skeletal muscle mass
                      • Decreased blood glucose levels
                      • Decreased insulin levels & increased insulin sensitivity
                      • Increased lipolysis & fat oxidation
                      • Increased Uncoupling Protein 3 mRNA
                      • Increased norepinephrine & epinephrine levels
                      • Increased Glucagon levels
                      • Increased growth hormone levels.

So basically fasting for periods under 72 hours actually increases how much fat your body is capable of burning and increases growth hormone levels (ie what is needed to shed fat and build muscle that people pay hundreds of dollars for on the black market).

Lets look at some of the common myth's we are fed:

Myth 1: Eat small meals every 2-3 hours speeds up metabolism: WRONG!
I makes no difference if you eat 7, 5, 3, or 1 meal per day. Numerous studies have shown it has no affect on metabolism.

Myth 2: Fasting will slow down your metabolism: WRONG! Studies show that fasting actually speeds up your metabolism if it's kept under 72 hours, the complete opposite of what most people believe.

Myth 3: If you fast you will burn off your muscle: WRONG! Studies show that when incorporating weight training 3 times per week you lose minimal muscle mass even when consuming ridiculously low levels of calories (one study had people on 800 cals per day for 12 weeks).

It allows me to concentrate on work during my busy days and still sit down and have a nice filling meal at dinner time with my wife while still dropping fat. Sounds good to me.

Same here. I often have to drag myself to the gym but when I leave I'm much happier. I have so much more energy and just feel better overall.

Yeah it's weird how the body works. When I sit around all day doing very little i feel tired and lethargic but when i work out etc i feel full of energy. You'd think it would work the other way round.....

If we're talking about trying to build muscle I would agree with you. That's not the topic of conversation here. These guys are really only lifting because it can't hurt, however it isn't necessary at all for losing weight. I don't know about you, but i don't know any fat distance runners and the majority of them are not on lifting programs at all.

The bottom line is they want to burn as many calories as possible. If they tire themselves out from lifting (a weight gaining exercise) and don't burn as many calories as they can in the time they have, they're not going to go in the correct direction as quickly as possible. Have to remember we're not talking about programs/diets for guys who are trying to maintain a healthy weight.

@Jonesy - Interesting info on the fasting, how are you planning on making it 48-72 hours without throwing down?

Lol hell no! I'm doing 2 x 24 hour fasts per week as recommended in the "Eat Stop Eat" book. I just finished a 24 hours fast and it wasn't too hard at all. I was very busy with work etc with lots of water and multi vitamin and it flew by. I suggest you guys read the ebook (it's a very quick read, PM me or Tha_kid if you want a free link to it) if you have any interest in it, some very interesting info there.
