    Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE

So, through self diagnosis on Google, I've got ITBS (iliotibial band syndrome). Basically amounts to shooting pain on the outside of my knee every time I go running.

From what I've read, I should get a foam roller and massage the area with it daily. Anyone have any experience with this?

But seriously, get one of those electric stimulation thing. It's what I had to use daily whenever I tour my MCL, PCL and LCL in my right knee.

Itbs or using a foam roller?

I use a foam roller almost daily. It's your best friend and enemy at the same time. Lol. I watched a couple vids on YouTube to get my form right. it's probably one of the best recovery tools you can get.

You use immediately after a workout and whenever you are sore.

This describes me from February through most of summer, I had some weird problems with my stomach and pain in my heart area so I looked it up once and yeah it was just a terrible idea. Luckily the doctor figured it out so it was all good, but that kicked in a real phase where I was worried about everything.

Kind of started me on my health kick now.

Finished the first month of Insanity and next week is "Recovery Week." I'm now down to medium and have been incorporating plain white t's into my wardrobe - something I never would have considered 6-12 months ago.

My waist is down a little over an inch and I've lost about 10lbs. I guess I need to stop buying clothes or eat a lot more.

What's the consensus on vitamin D supplements? Tabs, liquid gels, liquid form? I notice myself feeling horrible in fall/winter cause of sunlight.

At the beginning of August I weighed about 240lbs. After deciding it was time to ditch the fast foods and sweets (that's all I did), I am down to a reasonable 210. The first two weeks were difficult. It's amazing how that stuff can affect you. I've noticed I have a lot more energy as well. Working on hopefully getting down to 200 by the end of the year, but with winter and the holiday's coming up it will be tough.

                      Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE

Been fighting a darn cold all week, so I haven't hit cardio even once. The combination of being sick and the temps dropping into the low 30's has kept me to just bodyweight exercises inside.

I've made big progress on my pullups and pushups using the grease the groove method. I basically hang a pullup bar on the door and do pullups everytime I walk by it. 3 weeks ago, I could manage only 1 dead hang pullup, but i'm up to being able to do 3 now. I've NEVER been good at pullups, and to go from 1 to 3 dead hangers is big progress for me. Pushups have also become much easier. I typically drop and do 20 or so every couple hours or at random times. Just enough to slightly fatigue, but not enough to require extensive recovery.

I think i'll ease back into cardio with some burpee intervals for a few weeks. They are such a killer cardio exercise, and with the issue i've been having with ITBS in my knees, I figure it will give me more time to build up strength in the surrounding areas. Hopefully that will get rid of the issue. I've already started using a foam roller on the outsides of my leg to try and loosen up the IT band, and it's progressively getting less and less painful to do. I imagine that means it's working, so i'll keep at it.

My wife has a similar issue with her IT band. Foam roller works as does stretching and self massage. Strengthening the area is the key.

                          Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE

I have avoided this thread like the plague. The reason is that I have let myself indulge too often and have not worked out as I should. This past weekend I cleared out my garage and have been using it as my gym. I enjoy lifting alone in my gym so much better than a traditional gym.

I'm on day #5 of getting back into shape. I now have my girlfriend weighing me in every single morning and keeping track of my weight. With this I have no excuses and if I cheat it will reflect on the scale.

It's going to be a solid 2-3 months before I get back into the shape I want. I'm disappointed I fell off so hard, but I can either cry about it or bust my *** getting back what I had.

Good luck to everyone and it is great to read the success stories posted to this point. I look forward to posting my success story in a few months.

I been back in the gym hard the last month and half. Well to fill in the people who don't know. I collapsed at work two weeks ago. I went to stand up from my desk and it was like they talk about in the movies everything faded from the outside to the middle going dark. I dropped to one knee and fought tooth and nail not to go out. I just kept thinking, I CAN'T loose control of my body.

I'm Hypoglycemic so my first thought was my blood sugar was low. I crawled to the coke machine and grabbed a Mt. Dew. I have not had anything other than water for over a month at this point. I layed down and sipped this Mt Dew trying to bring my blood sugar up and get out of the haze.

A hour later nothing has changed and now my hands are VIBRATING like I'm holding a weed eater wide open. At this point I'm getting concerned because I just could tell something was wrong. I attempt to get up and all my muscles are locking up. My work then calls my fiance' and tells her they need to bring me to the doctor.

She shows up and I can barely walk at this point my muscles are so stiff. She brings me to the doctor and they say I need to go to the emergency room ASAP. Their first thought was something was wrong with my heart, reason for my hands vibrating so intensely.

I hit the emergency room and they immediately order a EKG, which at this point scared me cause that means they must of thought this could be a heart attack. 30 min later they are taking blood and plugging me with a IV of morphine for the pain (Everyone should try this stuff once WOW....AMAZING). While they are finishing my morphine they move me to have a CT scan done of my entire midsection.

Long story short, come to find out from the blood work. I flushed my body of sodium and was on the cuff of water intoxication. My kidneys were working double time and they were afraid they sustained damage this then caused my blood pressure to rise which resulted in me almost going out when I stood up from my desk. The lack of sodium was causing all kinds of other issues I was unaware of. Evidently sodium is one of the main chemicals that allow the electrical signals to pass, or aka "make the jump". So because my sodium was so low my nervous system was freaking out (hands vibrating).

My body then went into a crazy spiral, I ran 103 fever most of that night. My digestive track removed everything so to speak and basically my entire body felt like I have been hit by a truck. I remained in this crazy shape for almost a week and a half. This past weekend was the first weekend since, I've felt back to normal.

So basically me working out hard daily, drinking only water (roughly 120 oz a day) which sounds like a lot but really is not. Roughly 7 or 8 bottle water a day. Then cleaning up my diet to only Fruits, Vegetables, lean meats, fish and water led to the issue.

I had to go back in to have more blood work done last week to check my kidney function. Everything is looking good and they think that my body bounced back good. No long term damage should be done.

LOL took me a while to get to my point, but I'm going to start back on my workout schedule tonight. I've had to lay off the last two weeks to allow my body time to heal. I'm soooo ready to get back in the gym and hit it hard tonight. I've lowered my water intake to only 64oz a water a day and will be adding in extra sodium with some of my meals just as a "extra precaution". I've also added a multivitamin and a probiotic to my morning routine.

$5,000 dollars later I was diagnosed with Hyponatremia, which was caused by water intoxication

I don't understand the point in stepping on the scale every morning. Your body weight can change 5-10lbs just on water weight alone per day.

Create a diet that puts you under your daily intake, be consistent with it, be patient, and the weight will come off. Check progress bi weekly or monthly. Adjust your diet accordingly if you're not seeing results.
