    Re: 2013 FITNESS CHALLENGE

PT with my Navy DEP Tuesday.

    1.5 mile run
    15 push ups
    50 crunches
    15 pushups
    1.5 mile run

I did surprisingly well, but did struggle a little at times. Its been a rough month with family issues and such and my diet, workout has been suffering. It was a real wake up call, though.

Luckily it started raining during the last 1.5 mile run, I needed the cool down.

Thanks man, my goal now is no booze at all for 94 days. I start P90X in 4 days and I honestly miss the sober feeling. I think halfway thru that, I will be able to re-enlist into the military.

Sorry to hear about your arm issues. I had a friend who used to lift a lot and over time suffered nerve damage from his neck to his shoulder and it really affected his muscle mass in that arm. If he had gotten checked when it had started hurting, obviously it wouldn't have gotten as bad. Long story short, he visited a chiropractor cuz he didn't know what was causing the pain, she x-rayed him, saw the damage and it took about 2 months for him to feel like his old self. He went to her about twice a week. Not trying to scare you, but you really should see a med professional.

I've been keeping up with P90X. Honestly I've been half assing it a little too much so I'm not getting the crazy results some people do. I did weigh myself for the first time in months and I came in just over 180 which means I've actually put on a good 5 lbs since I started. My body fat has decreased a little so I've put on some muscle from the program and that's pretty crazy since I've been eating at or just below maintenance.

Yeah I've been doing a lot of research on this and it looks like I have Ulnar Nerve entrapment. So the nerve that runs along the outside of the shoulder down into the last 2 fingers to give sensation on that side of the arm is either pinched or compressed somewhere (I'm pretty sure it's at the wrist). Add to that I believe I sleep on my side and sometimes my hand/arm gets trapped under my body and I don't believe the nerve has actually had time to properly heal.

So basically what I've been doing is trying to correct the issue by wrapping my Arm with a towel before I sleep now to keep the arm straight... I've also been doing some light rehab stretching for that nerve. I'm going to try and give it at least a month or two of rest, and keeping my arm straight while I sleep and see how I recover. What really sucks is now I can't touch a weight for at least a month.

That's exactly what my buddy had. He also told me that it helped him to sleep on his back on the floor. Something about how the floor is level, whereas a bed, especially soft beds, will contour to your body weight.

So does anyone else hate taking a week off after completing a cycle?

I know it has to be done to allow my body to heal and grow but man I hate starting over each time

So started a new program (thanks to 12) and a cardio program in my pool. Due to an upcoming back surgery, I can't do any running, etc. So I bought some water weights and spend an hour in the pool every night.

So far 5 pounds lost in less than a week and arms/core are getting stronger... Thought I'd get a jump start on my physical therapy...

What's the cardio pool program you're on?

I need some high intensity/low impact workouts. My Achilles is starting to flare up again. Hopefully this anti-inflammatory medicine works and keeps the swelling down.

I really want to start this 2-week tabata/HIIT shred program. I'd like to get more lean but also switch up my routine and shock my system a little, not to mention add a little variety to my workout to stave-off boredom.

It's basically a mixture of Resistance & Cardio that goes like this:

                    Days 1 & 3 - Resistance
                    Deadlift - 4 sets/8 reps (heavy weight)
Tabata - Incline dumbell press. wide-grip pulldown, pec deck, seated cable row, double crunch (12-15 reps in 20 secs)
No more than 60 secs between sets

                    Day 2 - Cardio
Tabata - Burpees (8-20 sec cycles followed by 10 secs of rest)
High Intensity 12 sec Sprint (x5)
Low Intensity 48 sec Spring (x5)

                    Something along those lines

                      KG...

About a year ago I did physical therapy in the pool so I tried to duplicate that workout.

I bought a resistance belt and water weights from Sports Authority. I always have the belt on so I stay afloat. This really strengthens the core because I have to stay straight.

Using the weights, I do bicep curls, jumping jacks, work the triceps, pushups, etc. Also, I do laps holding the weights along my sides and bicycling... Phenomenal workout right here...

My cardio consists of that, bicycling without the weights, running, jogging and scissors kicks (backwards and forward).

Lastly, I take a half pumped up mini basketball and stand on it. From there, I do squats. Then I kind of do butterflies still standing on the basketball. In my physical therapy, I used a longer dumbell for this but haven't been able to find one. I find the basketball works well.

Finally hit the 60 pounds down mark. At this point it should be a little bit more but Ive had my fair share of hiccup weeks. But yeah just chugging along and working out strong.

Short update but yeah. Im going to Florida next week. The last time I was there was in December 60 pound heavier. Im looking forward to family seeing my progress.

So I just wanted to share this today. I've been losing weight steadily and of course I have days where I don't lose and even days where I gain a little which is to be expected. But today I weighed myself and was baffled. I did my workout last night and it was 103 degrees out in my garage. I was soaked to the bone by the end of it, I'm talking sweat puddles on the floor and all. So I figured if nothing else I probably lost a pound or so of water weight. Nope I actually went up .4 lbs. Now don't get me wrong I'm not freaking out about it, I just thought it was strange that I gained a little after losing so much sweat. I should add that my diet is pretty damn clean and I do drink a post workout shake, but still it was hard for me to believe when I weighed in this morning.

Did you weigh yourself right before the workout then after? Because weight can fluctuate pretty dramatically during the day for various reasons. Which is why I only weigh myself in the morning, when Im completely empty, to get a good read.

You may have lost sweat but were still carrying some food/water weight from the day. Also some scales have small errors depending on the temp of the room, and the surface you are on (mostly digital ones)

                              Nice work King.

My weight fluctuates so much. I'm down to about 180. My problem is when the parents go on vacation, which will be September...I just get real lazy and eat and lay down every night. Last time that happen (Jan-Mar) I went from 190 to 213.

EDIT: Some girl told me I was skinny yesterday, I told her she was on crack. I'm not fat, I'm 180 and 5' 8", but no where near skinny. Ideally I would like to be at 170 with some muscle.

I've been keeping a food log the past month or so. Its really helped in curving out unwanted snacks and munching, while also being a nice way to keep track of calories and what I'm eating. Its certainly hard to write down "ate gobs of gummi bears" next to a black bean wrap or bag of carrots, for example.

In that time I've stopped weighing myself on a daily basis and only do it a couple times a week - basically when I'm "curious." I like using the mirror for a better barometer for how I'm doing and how I look to myself.
