lol? Now this is getting ridiculous. I am not saying that I could be a Nascar driver. I am just saying that it takes no ATHLETIC ability.

        Sport:
        Noun
An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others.

So I can conclude that no athletic ability is needed to play a sport.

Again, I'll say it takes a helluva lot of skills to do that. But to call them athletes? Naw.
Watch a driver inside of the cockpit of a stock car and watch how much they crank the wheel and fight the car. And do that for hundreds of laps, takes some serious endurance and physical work. Much more athleticism than swinging a golf club or baseball bat.

I'm curious as to what athletic ability their is in racing a car. They literally sit on there *** for 3 hours steering a car going 200 mph. It takes knowledge. It takes guts. It takes being mentally stable/calm for the entire duration of the race. It does not in any way shape or form require or take athleticism.

EDIT: Fighting the car/cranking the wheel is not being athletic. Nor is having enough endurance. There are 50 year old drivers in Nascar. Good ones at that(Mark Martin). That alone should tell you they are not athletes.

G-Forces. It takes a heavy toll on you.

Endurance, also. How hot do you think it is in that cockpit?

This is such a dumb statement it's not even worth replying to, other than to point out the stupidity.

Lol, cranking, steering, endurance; since when has all that been synonymous w/ athleticism? You'd think we're disgracing the SPORT.

I think most in here have complimented it as a sport, saying it takes skill, guts, toughness, intense focus, etc. Just not athleticism. That's not a knock on the sport at all. They sit down for hours guys. I'm not sure how you can understand that, yet still try to argue the athleticism involved.

Ability to endure high temperatures is an athletic trait? So every octogenarian Florida retiree is an athlete now?

Does that really qualify them as athletes though? At the end of the day they drive a car around a giant oval for a living. No matter what it takes to be a NASCAR driver, I can't possibly imagine how they are athletes. I am not saying there isn't skill involved, just that, the skills involved doesn't require much athleticism in my opinion.

I'll agree that driving a stock car doesn't take nearly as much athleticism as mostly all other sports(football, basketball, hockey) but it definitely takes some athleticism to be able to endure fighting the car at 200 mph for an entire race, and much more athleticism than some sports such as golf.

Look up what the definition of a sport is. It says nowhere that it takes athleticism.
