Depends on what current it gets caught in. In the early 90s something like 30,000 rubber ducks went overboard and most of them are still making their way around the world with only a handful washing up on shore. Objects don't automatically gravitate towards a shore.

Two reasons I've read: One, as you mention, is in case in malfunctions. Apparently it can cause problems if left on in that case. Two, with a bunch of planes at the airport, you want to turn it off when not landing/taking off to reduce airwave traffic and interference.

Ok, well that makes sense.

Still there's gotta be something we can come up with. Maybe at least put the controls of the transponder inside something that only a special key or pass code will gain access to.

Has anyone come forward yet and given us a legitimate reason on why transponders can be turned off? Under what circumstance would a pilot ever need to do that? Even if this turns out to be pilot suicide it still needs to be addressed. It is obviously something that is being taken advantage of and has been taken advantage of in the past. Let's not forget 3 of the 4 hijacked planes on 911 had their transponders turned off too.

Just wondering, there has to be a reason for it. Maybe if the transponder malfunctions it can cause other serious issues? I don't know. Regardless they need to figure something out otherwise this is going to continue to be a vulnerability that hijackers or terrorists can take advantage of.

I have flown search and rescue far too many times on transponders that people failed/forgot to turn off, so it needs to be able to be secured when not in use/being tested. Furthermore, I've been flying before when mine malfunctioned…I received a call stating it looked like we were in distress. From my seat in the cockpit I was able to turn the thing off and then recycle it which basically reset it and then confirmed that a) it was my transponder (ELT) that was going off and b) I was not in distress.

About to read up on the latest...however, I am leaning more and more towards a one person type mission. Sort of like the Egypt Air ordeal. Although from what I know of the captain, I'm not sure it would be him. Anyway this is an odd situation and likely could be months, if not longer, before they find any piece of the plane.

Excuse me for my ignorance, but if this was hi-jacked for a terrorist attack, say in the US, wouldn't it show up on some type of radar before it even got close? Wouldn't they be able to shoot it down?

This is another interesting angle. India has come out and said there is no way the plane flew anywhere near Indian air because military defense radar's would pick it up.

When I heard this I immediately thought that it was fully possible that the plane did fly over Indian air and that they have to come out and say this because you can't really admit to "it is possible that a plane flew into our air space undetected"

That being said this story is very upsetting, but more perplexing. I haven't flown across an ocean before, do you lose signal once you leave mainland or are you able to stay connected via satellites? I don't get how there wasn't more cellular activity if the plane did in fact land.

The only way this plane landed somewhere is if they killed the passengers on the plane before it left ocean air cause they'd be on their phones.

I am not a conspiracy theorist but I don't think we will ever know the answer to what happened if it wasn't a crash. The governments may know eventually but I don't think they will release that information to us.

That isn't so weird.....the circumstances......that is weird.

That's pretty interesting though it could mean something else and not just the terror aspect as there are lots of people in this world that have that kind of sentiment. That's all i'll say publicly at least.

Last night I was doing some scouring on the net and there are some way out there theories concerning the plane for instance, there's one theory that says a UFO took the plane and everyone on board!

Najib was told that is the most promising lead on locating the plane, one of the people said.

Heh, UFO's are brought up as an explanation for basically every single missing plane and ship that has never been found.

Yeah, like I said in an earlier post, they could have had hints of some sort of impending catastrophic failure and initiated a U-turn, but the crew was incapacitated and the plane just continued on at whatever heading it was in at that point.

The longer this search goes on the more I think it landed somewhere. I know the ocean is massive and they were probably looking in the wrong spot to begin with, but they have search and rescue teams from 25+ countries and yet haven't found a single trace of the plane. 11 day search and nothing.

Plus I still don't understand why you'd fly 7+ hours just to crash the plane somewhere(unless they intended to crash it into a building or something 911 style or like others have said maybe something happened on board that incapacitated the pilots and the plane flew by itself).

As far as your second comment, if they crashed I'm certain it wasn't intentional. In either case, it was probably a matter of "running out of fuel." Either they all went unconscious as the plane flew for hours then finally went down, or they tried to reach their intended target and fell short as they ran out of gas. Or somebody overtook the plane and brought it down into water.

I'm still guessing it's on land. Selfishly, I hope it is on land, just to give those passengers any fighting chance of surviving. I'm also knocking on wood that anybody would shoot it down before any terrorists try and take out anything. Unfortunately, the passengers would probably be on that flight as well.
