Cardinals split 2 game series with Brewers

The Cardinals (88-71) split their mini 2 game series with the Brewers and are now 1.5 games back with 4 days left in the season. The Brewers have a 4 game series with the Marlins upcoming. The Cardinals have 3 versus the Pirates in St.Louis.

The Cardinals won Tuesday night in a game that went scoreless thru 9 innings. In the 10th, Tommy Edman and Lars Nootbaar would deliver back to back 2 out RBI hits to put the Cardinals up 2-0. Giovanny Gallegos would close it out to preserve the victory getting the Cards to within 1/2 game.

Wednesday would be another pitchers duel as Miles Mikolas and Freddy Perralta matched each other inning for inning. In the 6th, Ty France hit a solo homerun to put the Brewers up 1-0. In the Top of the 7th, Paul DeJong would get that run back with a solo homerun of his own tying the game at 1. In the 8th, the bullpen fell apart as Genesis Cabrera would give up a single to Christian Yelich. After getting Kolten Wong to pop out, the Cards got Jordan Hicks into the game. Yelich would take 2nd base on a Jordan Hicks wild pitch. Next pitch, Ty France would strike again, only this time with an RBI single putting the Brewers up 2-1. Renfoe would be out on a FC, Willy Adames intentionally walked and Hicks then struck out Wilson Ramos to end the inning. Devin Williams would strike out the side in the top of the 9th to secure the victory.

The Cardinals are off on Thursday as they fly home to face the Pirates. Depending on what happens Thursday between the Brewers and Marlins, the Cards would either be a game down or two games down. Either way, a sweep of the Pirates would be best for the Cards. Any loss, especially if down two games and it could be the end of the divisional championship hopes.

The Cardinals are also a 1.5 game half back of the 2nd wildcard spot.

Tigers(43-37) Stay Hot on Road Trip, Take 2/3 from D Backs(35-44)
It seems that the Tigers may have figured something out offensively. Scoring 17 over the combined three games may have helped. Also, what definitely helped was the Pitching, only giving up 7 to a struggling D Backs offense. Turnbull went 6.0 giving up 4 ER, on 4 H, getting the Tigers the Game 1 victory 7-4.

Pineda went only 5, giving up all 3 ER, on 7 H, but the offense was no where to be found which contributed to the 3-2 loss.

Mize however in Game three shut the door, pitching a complete game shutout, with only 4 hits and 2 walks, but less than stellar strikeout numbers. Greene, Baez would homer, and Barnhart looked to finally figure out his swing as the Tigers would get 13 hits and 8 runs in an 8-0 victory.

Now the Motor City Kitties head to the Bay, for a two game set to not only wrap up the road trip, but the month of June as well.

Angels Limp in to the All Star Break

The Angels lost to the Dodgers to close out the first half of their season. The loss was the Halos 3rd in a row, and they hope to get back on track after the break.

Freddie Freeman's grand slam in the 4th inning blew the game wide open and Noah Syndergaard who suffered the loss had his shortest outing of the season. The Angels go in to the break with a record of 60-36 good enough for 1st place in the AL West. They lead the Astros (59-37) by one game.

Cardinals finish season 90-72, miss playoffs by one game

The Cardinals (90-72) concluded their 2022 season Sunday afternoon at Busch Stadium with a come from behind 6-4 win over the Pirates. The Cardinals needed the win and a Braves loss to set up a tie and a game 163 to play for the right to earn the 2nd wild card spot. The Cardinals did their part, but the Braves walked off the Mets in the 10th inning thanks to Freddie Freeman's 300th career homerun.

The Cardinals lost on Friday night to put themselves squarely up against the wall and cost them the chance to win the Central Division as the Brewers beat the Marlins. The Cardinals were then 2 games behind both the Padres and Braves for the wildcard. After a thrilling 5-3 win on Saturday night where Nolan Arenado's 3 run homerun in the 7th propelled the victory, the Braves lost to the Mets again and the Cards were just one game back and still alive in the playoffs. But with the Braves win on Sunday, the season came to a screeching halt.

Very frustrating end to the 2022 campaign that saw the Cardinals be in the playoff race and in good shape most of the season until a bad stretch in September changed it all.

The Cardinals will now turn to their focus on their roster, potential free agents, potential trades and see where they fix some of the problems the 2022 team faced, primarily consistency from the starting pitching and major league ready depth for injuries.

Such a disappointing end to the season.

2022 season wrap up coming soon.
