NHL 16 News Post

The NHL 16 team continues to answer questions about the game at their Ask EA page. The Q&A is copied and pasted below for easier reading.

In Be A Pro, can we chose to be a hockey player? (Such as Sidney Crosby)

In NHL 16 you cannot select to be an NHL player in Be A Pro. This year it's all about creating your character and living out your NHL career.

What kinds of graphical improvements have been made to NHL 16 over last year?

For NHL 16, we have done a lot in terms of graphical improvements whether it be the new NBC broadcast package, more player authenticity, unique elements in each of the arenas or just general improvements that impact the overall look of the game.

Are there going to be more updated player likenesses for players that currently have generic faces?

Yes. We were able to scan additional heads and update player likenesses for NHL 16.

Do you have the New York Islanders "Yes Yes Yes" crowd chant after they score a goal in NHL 16?

We are trying to add as many team authentic presentation and atmosphere elements as we can to NHL 16 to bring our living worlds even more to life. We can't confirm what we have for the Islanders quite yet.

Are you planning to bring back the 3-Stars of the game celebration, like we have in real life? I know it's been a while since you removed them, but I think it's a pretty sweet add-on to the game. Thank you.

Not for this year. For NHL 16 our end of game flow matches what is most common on an NBC broadcast with the NBC theme playing over the end of game highlight reel and final score overlay as the broadcast team signs off. We did update our end of period and game score overlays to match the new look that NBC implemented this year to stay as authentic as possible.

Will player numbers be so highly inflated? It seems NHL15 took a huge step towards boosting player numbers, making it seem like it really didn't matter who you played, According to NHL15, Tyler Bozak(87) is almost as good as Phil Kessel(90), and Clarkson's(85) almost as good as JVR(87). The entire game is riddled with examples like this, not to mention that goalies basically fit into 2 categories, 85-86 or 93.I think some diversity in player rating would go a long way into helping teams feel more unique instead of top line and 3 second lines.

We work closely with a professional scout who provides our NHL, AHL and CHL ratings. We are always looking at making the ratings better each year and this is something we will look at prior to NHL 16. Two years ago were tuned our ratings so that more players would be in the high 70's and low 80's playing in the NHL to give that separation from the top players in the NHL.

Have you made significant improvements to the AI that should not be in the game? Such as skating offside, taking interference penalties, running the goalie, etc

We are always looking at ways that we can improve our AI both offensively and defensively. However, we do want them to behave as human as possible so taking penalties and sometimes going offside will be part of the experience depending on how the play evolves around them.

How the player evolution will work in Be a GM? Will it be like madden where you can assign drills to players and spend XP on a specific aspect like acceleration?

In NHL 16, Be A GM Player progression is tuned based on real world statistics of how players have grown in the hockey world. The two main contributing factors are the player's potential and his likelihood of reaching his potential. Some players will grow faster while other will be late bloomers. Putting players in the right situation based on their roles will have an impact on how a player develops.

With the new player "classes" in EASHL will there be any attribute type system to give any customization to player stats? (Speed, hand eye, ect)

Hi Joe. If I'm not mistaken I think you are talking about progression and the ability to boost a player's attributes. With the player class system in NHL 16, the aim is to have all the strengths and weaknesses of each player be visible and transparent to each user. While you can still customize the way your created pro looks, we took a new direction with the player stats such that they are locked based on the player class you select.

Will there be offline HUT challenges that reward either packs or coin bonuses or just offline games that tally coins for gameplay like they are in 15

HUT Single Player Seasons is a new mode for NHL 16. While it does have some aspects of the previous HUT Tournaments, we do not support rewarding items or pack bonuses at this time.

In EASHL will there be tournaments? If so are they similar to the past and how far are they apart. They used to be every month which made them more rewarding, as they went weekly they lost their value.

We can definitely tune/tweak the frequency of the Playoff window within the EASHL Online Seasons. Thus far, the overwhelming response supports bringing back the monthly format.

Since I avoided 14 and 15, is this really true that they improve their ratings in the past compared to 13? I only played less than 2 weeks of 15 because it lacks so many things in BaGM and I am under the opinion that they didnt do a good job in 15, except in the presentation.

I can see the high 70's like 78 and others as 81, but 3-5 pts difference is that a lot and noticeable in the game play in 15? Because in the video differentiation, I dont see much difference between Crosby and the other guy. I forgot if it was in 15 NG or the past gen.

Yeah, alot better feedback than previous years even if they are playing it safe and dodging alot of bullets. Hoping for some more and hopefully new information during E3 and some in-game videos.

I really can't stand the vagueness of some of these answers. Like the answer for the graphics question. They could at least give us some more detailed examples of what they mean.

EA is answering these questions like a politician - by not answering them. Plus, I'm seeing a lot of "well, we won't be adding back the simple features we had before we went to 4th gen". Unless this thing gets good reviews, no way I'm buying (especially day one).

As much as I love the NHL franchise, I'm hoping I'm wrong.

The thing is about ratings, specifically in HUT, is that the ratings are an average of like 4 or 5 different stats.

So while you may have an 88 skater vs and 86 skater, the 86 skater would be faster temporarily due to the acceleration stat for example.

As far as I know, guys tried and used the 10 different types of Jagrs says 1 version is definitely a speed upgrade over another, while some versions you won't notice the difference in speed.

And of course 1-3 ratings won't make a HUGE difference; but some should be there. Or else boosting would be pretty brutal in HUT unless they take it out, which they won't.

Just part of being a large corporation. Probably safe to assume anything that's coming back as a "we've been considering it..." is a no. Can't really blame them for being vague as much as I know they'd get blasted on here of they simply said no.

I'm sorry, but it scares me that they think they already put player separation into the game. What is the difference between 81 and 83? When you play the game every player feels the same. It's evident in the player differentiation video. They need a whole lot more separation between players. High 78 to 93 doesn't do it for me. 4th liners should be in the 60's, 3rd liners in the low 70's, 2nd liners in the high 70's to low 80's, 1st liners mid-80's and higher. John Scott being a 62 and Crosby being a 97 really shows great separation.

Oh and I would work as their "scout" for less money than whatever he makes. And I guarantee I'll have weekly roster updates with true player separation. Every single attribute would be looked at and studied. I do it for free now, so I don't even care about the money. I just want people to play with accurate rosters that truly represent the game I love.

No need to buy....just rent it if you have gamefly. If you are not a member, then apply for the "trial" version and have NHL 16 as your first rent. You could cancel the gamefly trial membership after you tried NHL 16. I am a member of GF and definitely I will put this in my "Q" list and then return it in few days to get my next game on the "Q".

Ya, i'm not getting a very good feeling about player separation for '16', either. Which really makes Be a GM tough to play.

I always hate how they partially do stuff. "Some teams will have authentic atmosphere, but not all". Like the intros they had previous gen.. 3 teams had them and that was it.

This is probably going to be what NHL 15 should have been. As much as I love the presentation stuff, I really hope game play is improved.

# 12 dougie88 @ 06/06/15 05:39 PM
Of course, the player separation issues wouldn't exist if they would just put Edit Player back in the game... It's almost as though they want their own rating system to be the law.

I don't find these Q&A sessions to be very encouraging....I was expecting them to hype me up enough to convince me that significant changes have finally been made, but it sounds like the game is still lacking in many areas. I just don't get what happened to this franchise.

I'm normally a fairly positive minded person, but have to admit that i find myself expecting things to be kinda 'whatever' at this point with NHL. The anticipation for the game has kinda flat lined a bit for me. I'm just not getting a vibe from EA Canada that thier all that interested in putting out a truly impressive hockey game at this point. So yep Coma, kinda makes me wonder too.

Then whats the point of playing these games?

With respect, I have to disagree with the 'can't really blame them for being vague' statement. After last year's debacle and taking a massive hit in sales, their marketing and PR department should be doing a hefty amount of outreach to try and win back former players. Maybe they don't think last year was rock bottom in terms of PR, but after that roll out, I would think being brutally honest about what to expect in this year's game would at least win back the respect of fans.

For example, I may disagree with their decision to have zero differentiation among classes in EASHL save for equipment, but I can respect that they're trying out something new.

Unfortunately, EA continues to play the shell game, hoping people will buy first and complain later.

I think what they are doing right now is fine. Of sports game coming out this fall, NHL 16 has probably the same info out there as much as the other games. Madden has released a little about Connected Franchise, 2K has told us that Spike Lee is taking over MyCareer story and Fifa it's only that there's only 12 women's team you can play with in the game. E3 is next week if we don't hear a lot at the event then we can start to get pissed. Because most companies will wait until E3 to release a lot of their information.

It's sad to see EA try and cover up their gameplay flaws by delivering us useless presentation upgrades. Are they attracting that many new members to the series with these flashy upgrades and modifications to the NBC aspect of the game? It frustrates me because I know these guys are putting hardwork and time into their games, but it just doesnt show, at least to the hardcore gamer. Can someone explain to me how one year a feature can be in a game, then the next year its gone. Am I wrong to think that instead of making a new game each year, why cant they build on the successful things and just keep pushing out great product after great.

I've always joked about EA making a game that doesn't fully satisfy the consumer because they know they'll need that exact consumer to buy their game next season. It's a vicious cycle that seems to never end..
