Cincinnati, OH (AP) - The 25th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (8-2, 4-1 Big East) made a major step in their quest for the Big East crown this Friday night as the Mountaineers defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats (6-4, 4-2 Big East) 35-27 in a tightly contested game that came down to the wire.

The Mountaineers found themselves staring at a 27-16 deficit early in the fourth quarter after Noel Devine muffed a punt return and Cincinnati's Deon Reed returned it 48 yards for a touchdown.

However, magic struck on the ensuing kickoff as Noel Devine returned the kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown to bring the Mountaineers within five points, after failing the two-point conversion. Then, with 3:35 left, WVU took the lead for good as Jarrett Brown found Tavon Austin open on a crossing route and Austin took it in for a score from 22 yards out. The Mountaineers missed the two-point conversion, however, and clung to a narrow 28-27 lead.

Cincinnati was forced to punt the ball with shortly under three minutes remaining, facing a fourth-and-long. The Mountaineers managed to run the ball inside the 10 yard line and redshirt-freshman running back Jordan Roberts took it in for the score with 40 seconds remaining.

Cincinnati got the ball back, but would run out of time just past midfield as Pike was sacked on the final Hail Mary attempt and the Mountaineers emerged victorious in a pivotal road game.

"This is obviously huge to our chances at the Big East Title and the BCS bid that comes with it," stated West Virginia head coach Doc Holliday. "We still need USF to lose one more game, so we don't control our own destiny, but if we can run the table over these last two games, I think we have a decent chance at getting the conference title."

The remainder of USF's Big East schedule consists of a road game at Rutgers tomorrow, a game at home against Louisville, and a road game at UConn. The Bulls also host the Miami Hurricanes in their final non-conference game of the season on November 28th.

Morgantown, WV (AP) - The 17th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (9-2, 5-1 Big East) clinched at least a share of the Big East Title and the league's BCS berth this evening as the Mountaineers dominated the PIttsburgh Panthers (7-4, 3-3 Big East) 24-7 to claim their first conference title since 2007, the year West Virginia defeated Oklahoma 48-28 in the Fiesta Bowl.

The snow wreaked havoc on this one as both quarterbacks performed rather terriblly. West Virginia's Jarrett Brown completed 13 of 26 passest for 164 yards, a touchdown, and three huge interceptions while Pitt's Bill Stull was downright terrible, only completing 10 of 36 passes for 101 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Stull completed a mere 27% of his passes in the windy, snowy conditions.

Of course, one must also credit the West Virginia defense for Stull's troubles, as the WVU defense was swarming all over the field and blitzing a lot, resulting in Pitt only gaining 155 yards of total offense. Pitt did not put points on the board until 3:27 left in the game, whien Bill Stull connected with Aaron Smith on a 36 yard fly route.

"We kept on putting pressure on Stull to get rid of the ball and it worked to perfection," explained West Virginia defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel. "The conditions favored the defense and by putting pressure on Stull, we were able to keep him uncomfortable and the snow and wind took care of the rest. All in all, I think we accomplished what we set out to do, and then some."

West Virginia did not put points on the board until halfway through the third quarter, when Tavon Austin ran the ball into the end zone from two yards out. Austin would also be on the receiving end of a screen pass towards the end of the third quarter, which he took 67 yards for the Mountaineer's second score to make it 14-0.

West Virginia added onto the lead to make it 21-0 after Mark Rodgers ran in from a yard out with five minutes remaining. Pitt tried to come back by scoring a 36 yard touchdown pass with 3:27 remaining, but after failing on the onside kick, WVU got the ball inside the 40 yard line. Tyler Bitancurt finished off the drive with a 26 yard field goal with 1:40 led to put the Mountaineers ahead by three scores, all but sealing the game.

With a win next week at Rutgers, the Mountaineers can claim the Big East Title as their own. However, if they lose, the Mountaineers may have to share their trophy with Louisville or Cincinnati. Either way, however, the Mountaineers will be going to a BCS bowl as West Virginia defeated both Louisville and Cincinnati earlier this season.

Piscataway, NJ

Piscataway, NJ (AP) - A week after beating Pittsburgh in the Backyard Brawl to clinch the Big East's BCS bid and at least a share of the Big East Title, the 13th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (9-3, 5-2 Big East) suffered a let-down against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (8-4, 3-4 Big East).

Ultimately, the loss can be credited to turnovers, five of them, in fact. two of them which were returned for key Scarlet Knight touchdowns.

"We turned the ball over way too much and there is simply no excuse for that," stated West Virginia head coach Doc Holliday.

The Mountaineers outgained Rutgers, but the Scarlet Knights only had two turnovers to the Mountaineers' five.

Jarrett Brown threw for a season-high 340 yards and threw for three touchdowns, but he was plauged by three interceptions, two of which were pick-sixes. Perhaps the worst occurred with under 10 seconds left in the first half with West Virginia backed up inside the five yard line. Offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen called for a wide receiver screen, which seemed like a safe call that could surprise the Rutgers defense. It didn't turn out so well, however, when linebacker Manny Abreu jumped in front of Brown's pass to Jock Sanders and walked it in from five yards out to put the Knights up 28-27 at halftime.

While the second half was back-and-forth, that can ultimately be considered the turning point of the game as West Virginia looked to be starting to take control of the game before that fateful play.

This loss will result in West Virginia sharing the Big East Title with Louisville and possibly Cincinnati if the Bearcats can beat Pitt in Pittsburgh later this afternoon. Still, the Mountaineers will be taking up the conference's BCS bid as the Mountaineers own tie-breakers over both Louisville and Cincinnati.
