Bears bring back Whitehair

The Bears have just signed center Cody Whitehair to a new contract extension, the team announced today. Whitehair signed a 4 year deal worth $23.6 million, and is now under contract through 2023. This keeps the current offensive line intact for a few more years.

Tracy's 5th field goal lifts Bears past Vikes in Trubisky's return
2019WK9.jpg

The Bears moved to 6-2 at the halfway point of their season, as rookie kicker Cole Tracy nailed a 40 yard field goal as time expired to erase a 9-point 4th quarter deficit. Tracy now has 2 game winning field goals in his first 8 career games.

All of the Bears' first half points came from the foot of Cole Tracy, and the Bears didn't score any touchdowns until early in the fourth quarter on a Trubisky TD pass to Anthony Miller. The Vikings played with a ground and pound offense, giving Dalvin Cook the ball 27 times as he averaged just 3.8 yards per carry.

After Cook's second TD run of the day put the Vikings up 28-19 with 5:34 to play, it looked like the Bears were running out of chances. But on the ensuing drive, Trubisky led the Bears down the field and threw his second touchown of the day, this time a 14 yard strike to Allen Robinson. The Bears stopped the Vikings, who made a bad decision by trying a 58 yard field goal with 1:29 to play. Fairbairn missed, and the Bears received the ball in great field position, starting the drive on their own 48 yard line.

The Bears drive almost ended early, as they faced a 4th and 4 around midfield. Tarik Cohen took a pass in the flat and dove for the first down markers, fumbling the ball in the process. It was recovered by the Vikings, but upon review it was discovered that Trae Waynes, who had recovered the fumble, had a foot on the sideline as he recovered, therefore making the ball officially out of bounds, and staying with Chicago. After a couple more sideline throws and Jordan Howard runs, the Bears were set up with a 40 yard field goal attempt for the win. Vikings coach Mike Zimmer had all three second half timeouts, but elected not to take one to try to ice the kicker. Cole Tracy sent the kick through the uprights, and the Bears narrowly escaped with a close 29-28 victory.

The Bears are set to play just their second road game of the season (thanks NFL scheduling) as 7 of their first 8 games were at Soldier Field (?!). The Saints have struggled at home, with a 1-3 mark, but Drew Brees is having a phenomenal season, even at age 40. Roquan Smith is likely to play, as he is back in practice at full participation despite leaving last week's contest in the first quarter. The Saints are coming off the bye looking to get back over .500.

Re: Winning in the Windy City | A Chicago Bears Dynasty (M19)

Second half comeback bid falls 2 yards short, Trubisky injured on final drive
Madden NFL 19_20190304165440.jpg

The Bears came within 2 yards of erasing an 18-point second half deficit, losing to the Saints 26-28 on the final play of the game.

One of the best SNF games so far this season, the Saints completely outplayed the Bears in the first half. Their offense was full of firepower, as Cameron Meredith caught a slant and broke a couple tackles on his way to a 68 yard score against his former team, putting the Saints up 7-0. The Saints would find the endzone twice more in the first half, first on a Brees to Josh Hill TD connection, and once again on the following drive, which was just 2 plays. A 71 yard run by Alvin Kamara was followed by a 2 yard TD run, giving Kamara the first of his 2 rushing TDs. The Bears were able to put up 3 points as time expired in the first half, and the Saints went to the locker room with a 21-3 lead at half.

The Bears came out of half with a little more offensive action, scoring on a 33 yard pass from Mitchell Trubisky to Javon Wims, for Wims' first career NFL touchdown. This brought the Bears within 11, only for the Saints to answer back with Kamara's second touchdown.

After the Bears punted to begin the 4th quarter, the game looked like it was just about over. That's when the Bears started to look completely different. After a Saints 3-and-out, the Bears took the ball down the field and scored from 3 yards out on a ball that was tipped at the line of scrimmage and fell right right into the arms of Anthony Miller. After yet another 3-and-out for New Orleans, the Bears drove down the field again, this time settling for a field goal on 4th down with under 3 minutes to play to make it a one possession game.

The Bears allowed one first down on the ensuing drive, and then were able to stop the Saints three times, allowing them to get the ball back with just under 2 minutes remaining in the game.

On the first play of the drive, Trubisky found Wims for 13 yards, but on the very next play, Trubisky was sacked by Marcus Davenport and was injured. Enter Tyree Jackson.

Tyree Jackson came in the game with no timeouts and 1:36 to play, with the Bears at their own 32. The Bears marched up to the Saints' 49 in a few plays before Jackson threw 2 incompletions. On 3rd and 10, Jackson found Wims over the middle, who was able to fight forward and bring up a 4th and 1. With no timeouts, Jackson ran the offense up to the line and completed a pass to Tarik Cohen in the right flat, who made a sensational play to avoid 2 tackles and get out of bounds at the Saints' 21 with 5 seconds left to play.

It came down to one final play. Tyree Jackson took the shotgun snap, avoided pressure and rolled out to his left. He felt pressure and had to get rid of the ball, and made the best throw of his career on this play. Jackson was running left, turned back towards the middle of the field, and threw a ball to the endzone while on the run, and it was caught by rookie Marquise Brown for a touchdown.

The Bears needed a 2 point conversion to tie. The Bears came out in shotgun with 3 receivers (Robinson, Miller, Wims) and Jackson attempted to find Wims on a slant, but it was picked off by Saints LB AJ Klein, ending the game.

Tyree Jackson came in the game and put on quite a show in Trubisky's absence, but Trubisky has confirmed that he will be good to go for next week's game against the Chiefs. Roquan Smith had one of his best performances, with 4 sacks and 9 tackles, earning him the NFC Defensive Player of the Week Award.

The Bears fall to 6-3, but still have a 2 game lead in the NFC North. The Saints are back over .500, with a big win at home.

The Bears will look to rebound in a tough matchup with the 6-3 Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Matt Nagy has confirmed that Mitchell Trubisky will be good to go for Sunday. The injury he suffered against the Saints was just leg cramps, so he will be back in practice with full participation.

Meanwhile for Kansas City, the offense will be without AFC Rookie of the Year front-runner Damien Harris. Doug Martin will get the start in his place, and we may see some snaps by second-year back Darrel Williams as well.

This game is important for both teams as they try to stay on top of their divisions.

Re: Winning in the Windy City | A Chicago Bears Dynasty (M19)

Bears to retire Urlacher's jersey number, "Last one for real"

The Chicago Bears have decided to retire one more jersey number, even after Mike Ditka's 89 was said to have been the last one the Bears would retire. Chairman George McCaskey announced today that the most recent Bears Hall of Famer will have his jersey retired at the Bears' opening home game next season (2020).

"This is the last one for real. Brian symbolized what it means to be a Monster of the Midway." This will be the 15th number retired by the Bears, and any more retirements could threaten the team to run out of issued numbers, especially in the preseason.

While there are many more good candidates for number retirements: Mike Singletary, Richard Dent, Dan Hampton among the most notable; the Bears can't sacrifice any more numbers to this honor.

No other players have worn 54 since Urlacher's retirement after the 2012 season.

Good thing you have Jackson in case Trubiscuit is turning into Tony Romo.

Making sure nobody is wearing retired numbers is something I do with each new crop of players. And with my Bears nobody is allowed 50 or 53 either. Wish retired numbers were in the game but not sure how hard that is to code. Plus they have more important stuff to work on, like MUT.

It would be nice if they could throw in an option for franchise so that no teams would wear retired numbers.

Jackson has been a nice surprise of a 7th round pick so far, it’ll be interesting to see what happens with some progression moving forward.
