Start of Season - 2018

Fairly uneventful off season of us. We were able to bring back Moose, Herrera, Minor and Escobar. Moose signed a 5 year deal worth 45 million and a player option. Escobar signed a 2 year deal worth 13 million and a mutual option. Mike Minor signed a 3 year deal for 13 million and a team option. I thought Herrera was eligible for free agency but he had 1 season of arbitration left. Signed him to a 2 year deal worth 11 million. Only made one pick up in free agency. Signed reliever Ryan Webb to a 2 year deal for 5 million.

Wasn't really sure what the plan was heading into Spring Training. The starting rotation was pretty much set. Herrera and Soria were locked into the pen. The other 5 or 6 spots were all up for grabs. Nathan Karns won the long reliever and spot starter role. With Brian Flynn, Ryan Webb, Seth Maness and Travis wood filling out the rest.

On the offensive side Salvy, Moose, Escobar and Gordon were pretty much guaranteed spots with everything else up for grabs. Salvy ended up breaking his forearm with 10 days before the season started. He will be out until the beginning of May at the earliest. Taking his spot as the starting catcher will be Peter O'Brien. He hit .271/.379/.542 with 3 HR in 48 AB. Trey Mancini will start at 1B. He hit .288/.344/.475 with 3 HR in 59 AB. Raul Mondesi and Whit Merrifield will split time at 2B. Mondesi hit .263/.328/.333 in 57 AB and Whit hit .210/.269/.306. But he hit .278 against LHP. The CF job went to Jurickson Profar and Billy Burns. Profar hit.302/.356/.547 with 3 HR in 53 AB. Burns hit .302/.315/.547 with a HR and 3 SB in 53 AB. Jorge Soler won the full time RF job hitting .319/.389/.617 with 2 HR in 47 AB. 9 of his 15 hits in ST went for extra bases. And last the DH job goes to Brandon Moss and Hunter Dozier. Moss hit .294/.400/.569 with 4 HR in 51 AB. While Dozier hit .356/.431/.733 with 4 HR in 45 AB.

21 year old Samir Duenez was really close to making the team. He had the numbers but it was between him and Dozier. He hit .364/.440/.659 with 3 HR in 44 AB. Cheslor Cuthbert, Paulo Orlando, Christian Colon, Bubba Starling, Ryan O'Hearn, and Jorge Bonifacio were all fighting for a spot but will start the season down in AAA.

Not sure what to expect out of this season. I really doubt we make the playoffs. I also dont think we are as bad as last season suggests. I thought we were a .500 team but that clearly wasnt the case. I guess as long as we win more games than last year ill be happy.

Started my first franchise in MLB the Show '17. I chose the Athletics and I am determined to have this 'chise last. I'm doing the play one, sim five method. We're 5-7, just 1 GB so far as the division has been pretty weak so far. Looking forward to trying to use the "Moneyball" strategy to build this team up.

2-4 through our first 6 games. Our bullpen is HORRIBLE this far as Seth Maness and Seung Wan Oh each have ERA's of plus 35.00!!

Couple that with the fact that our bats have been subpar and you can see why we are 2-4.

Starting a 3 game series against the Cubs as we play our home opener.

The man, the myth, the legend does it again. Rule 5 rookie catcher Herb Fuentes hits a walk off HR to beat the Marlins 2-1.

We could only get 3 hits but it was enough due rally in the 7th. Marlins had walked the bases loaded to setup the double play but ended up pushing a run in due to a HBP.

Cubbies take 3 of 4 against Miami (all 1 run games). 40-24

April was obviously an amazing start to the year and was extremely welcome after last years April. For the most part everyone was hot with a few outliers. I suspect guys to start cooling down now as this has already happened. Stats are beginning to regress to the mean for mostly everyone. Michael feliz unfortunately went down with a torn hamstring and is projected to miss the next 1-2 months as of the 2nd of May. We also had a fairly easy schedule in April playing only 2 team above .500. With already a solid lead on the division the Astros are setup in a great position. Aaaaand the Rangers are 11-14 so all is good in the world.

Pitcher Notes

Dallas Keuchel - Keuchel is back to Cy Young form. Before his last outing he had an ERA below 1.80, after a somewhat rough outing (Gave up 3 runs all solo shot dingers) it is still at a great 2.16. If Keuchel can keep this up for the entire year he may be getting looked at for an extension.

Lance McCullers - Lance worried me a bit after his first 2 outings his ERA was above 4, this was also his first time to ever actually start the season with the team. But he is back to the guy we thought he was. He currently leads the MLB in K's and looks to continue improving this year.

Mike Fiers - Fiers so far is probably the biggest surprise on this pitching staff, at least in the starting rotation. After battling it out to have a spot in the rotation to start the year he has probably been our second best starter so far.
But his starts are beginning to regress to the mean after giving up multiple runs in his last outing. The Astros dont need him to keep this up but if he can keep that ERA below 4 then this Astros staff which was the biggest question mark this year is in a lot better shape.

Charlie Morton - Morton has been pretty much what we expected coming into the season, perhaps a tad bit better. He will keep the club in the game but dont expect him to win the team a lot of games on his own. He is however making his case to be the #5 man when McHugh comes back in a few weeks.

Joe Musgrove - The young arm from California has had a bit of a rocky start to his season posting a 5.88 ERA however he showed good signs in his last outing only giving up 1 run in 6 innings of work. As it stands right now his odds of staying in the rotation long term are not great but if he can put out a few more good outings he may be able to keep his spot in the rotation.

Brad Peacock - Peacock really hasnt done much for the team. He gets a lot of K's but he also gets a lot of runs. As it stands now in a few weeks he will likely be back in AAA.

Tony Sipp - Other than his last game where he allowed a solo home run Sipp appears to be back to form of being a dominant lefty specialist. After posting an ERA over 6 last year the Astros are hoping their lefty specialist can bounce back and prove he deserved the contract which will pay him 12 million over the next 2 years.

James Hoyt - Hoyt was called up after Feliz went down with a torn hamstring and has done good. Although he has not even pitched 2 innings he has looked very good in his very limited time.

Chris Devenski - Devenski was absolutely amazing last year and he is continuing and improving on that trend. The middle relieve who can throw 3+ innings has probably been the Astros 2nd best reliever this year. He has won the Astros a few games by saving the bullpen in extra inning games.

Jandel Gustave - Gustave has been amazing for us so far this year and may be getting promoted to a setup role if he keeps this up. A sub 2 ERA for the 24 year old flamethrower from the DR has me excited to see what he can do for us in the future.

Will Harris - Will got off to a good start then had a bad couple of outings then his last outing was solid. I am not too worried about him however if needed Gustave can take his roll as our 7th inning man.

Luke Gregerson - After a great showing in the WBC Gregerson has continued that into the MLB regular season. After what some may consider a little bit of a down year he has been dominant so far this season.

Ken Giles - Giles has easily been our best reliever and our 2nd best pitcher on the staff if not the best. After an extremely disappointing 2016 Giles is starting this season right and is back to being a dominant closer. He has allowed only 1 run in 16 innings.

George Springer - After a little bit of a slow start George has turned out to be one of our better hitters thus far into the season. With 10 Springer dingers he is tied for 2nd in MLB for home runs.

Alex Bregman - This first month has been extremely up and down for Alex but he seems to have found his groove. He started off the season ice cold then had a small hot streak before seeing his batting average plummet once again below .200 and it has been rising ever since now up to a great .309. He is hitting for perhaps less power than some had hoped coming into the season but he has done his job of getting on base over the last week or so as our #2 hitter.

Jose Altuve - Altuve started red hot had a short slump but seems to be back to form. He is on pace to improve on his home run count from last year as he has already knocked in 6 so far. The Astros undisputed best player is having another great season.

Carlos Correa - Correa after starting off last season poorly has changed the tune this year. The young stud shortstop has already knocked in 4 dingers and has hit for pretty good average though it has fallen over the past few games.

Carlos Beltran - The old man has easily been the Astros best hitter thus far this season and leads the MLB in home runs hitting 5 more than the 2nd best.
I honestly dont know how he is doing it but he has been amazing and is having a career year at the age of 39.

Yulieski Gurriel - The Cuban stars talent seems to have carried over to MLB as he has been a great middle of the order hitter for the Astros, 3rd on the team in home runs. Not only has his bat been great but Yuli's fielding has also been amazing thus far in the year. He did commit an early error but he has made some spectacular plays so far this season.

Nor Aoki - Though Aoki's batting average shows he may be having a down year he started off the season red hot and I anticipate him to hit in the .280-290's for the rest of this season being a great bottom of the order guy.
(Seriously this lineup is stacked when you have a .280 guy at the bottom of the order)

Josh Reddick - Well Reddick started off very very bad only getting a few hits through the first 2 weeks of the season but he has since started to return to form. The Astros free agent signing has gotten his average up to .250 and while he may not be doing all we had hoped he is getting there.

Brian McCann - He has just been bad. Hopefully he can start producing otherwise the Astros are going to have a very expensive and ugly contract to eat over the next few years. It is still early however and we can still hope that he will turn things around. I mean his power has looked good but I cant play someone that is hitting .157.

Evan Gattis - Gattis is also having a down year and has lead to the Astros getting barely any production out of the catcher position. Uncharacteristically only hitting one homrun through his first 49 AB's of the season. Gattis has however been good defensively and I am sure that the power will come.

Marwin Gonzalez - Marwin was amazing to start the year but has regressed to the mean. Though he is hitting for more power than previous years.
He will continue to be the Astros super utility man.

Jake Marisnick - Marisnick is an odd cookie to say the least. He will have games where he has 3 hits then he will strikeout the next game 4 times.
It seems like if he could just be more consistent he could be an everyday player for the Astros. His fielding is certainly amazing but he needs that consistency at the plate.

Prospect Report

Francis Martes - The Astros #1 prospect got off to a rocky start through his first 2 games but was dominant in his last outing and now has a 4.39 ERA. To start the season I was originally worried he may get called up before he was ready between Musgrove and Peacock both being terrible.
I still think he will make it to Houston sometime this year but it will probably be a few months.

Kyle Tucker - Probably one of the Astros more promising prospects started off the season batting over .300 but has since fallen back down to .263.
In 76 AB's at AA the 20 year old has also hit 2 home runs to go along with 3 RBI's and 4 SB's.

Brady Rodgers - Rodgers is rated fairly high and has been good so far in AAA. The 26 year old prospect has a 3.33 ERA in 27 innings. If the Astros need to make an emergency call up for a starting pitcher he will be the man.

A.J. Reed - The sturdy 1st baseman saw some time in the majors last year but was extremely disappointing however he has been good so far in AAA.
He has hit 6 home runs to go along with 21 RBI's while batting .343 in 99 AB's.
The first baseman will likely get another shot in the majors at some point this year if he continues this.

Tyler White - The "Great White" who had an amazing first week in the majors last year is producing in AAA batting .330 with 2 HR's and 18 RBI's.
While not really a highly touted prospect he could be called up at some point.

Preston Tucker - I think a lot of people have begun giving up on Kyle Tucker's big brother to be a solid MLB player however he has other plans.
Batting .314 with 5 HR's and 15 RBI's he is performing great in AAA and may get another shot in the big leagues.

Teoscar Hernandez - Teoscar also got to see some time in MLB last year and was arguably the best performer (outside of Bregman) for rookies for the Astros. e is determined to get another shot in the big leagues as he has started the season batting .309.

Notes

Not really much else needs to be said I dont think other than a few ideas I have.

I am considering moving the lineup around currently this is what I am envisioning:

1. Correa
2. Altuve
3. Beltran
4. Springer
5. Bregman

I dont know about Correa being a leadoff man as he has spent most of his career as a 3-4 hitter but he has a solid OBP and I really dont want to see him down to 5.

The #2 hole is favored by sabermetrics to house one of the better hitters so Altuve wouldnt really see much of a loss by moving up 1 slot. This would allow me to move Beltran higher up in the lineup as he is currently batting 5th and Springer as well probably our 2 best hitters thus far into the season.

Bregman obviously suffers the most with a lineup like this as he would move from 2nd to 5th and he doesnt hit for much power so it would be rough having him as the #5 hitter. I wouldnt want to upset him but if we go with this he may be moved to 6th.

The only other option would be Correa to the 5 hole and Bregman as leadoff but I dont feel comfortable right now with using Bregman as a leadoff man.

I'm at the beginning of September with a diamondbacks franchise (play 1 sim 5). I've had tough luck with injuries losing Drury and Tomas for the season and Pollack and Peralta for 2 months each.

I am going to finish outside of the playoffs (likely around 70 wins). But I'm not sure where to go from here. Should I keep the team intact and maybe add a free agent to see if we can make a run? Or should I trade off pollack, greinke, and/or Goldschmidt to restock and rebuild?

I have Goldschmidt signed for another year and Pollack is arbitration eligible for one more year so I'm leaning towards keeping the team together. Try to add a decent free agent bat (preferably left handed) and make a run with a healthy team. If we are out by all star break then tear it down and rebuild. Thoughts?

Interesting thoughts. Here is my dbacks story so far. I am near the end of July and about 2-3 games below 500. I traded Pollack at the all-star break for Joc Pederson and Puig who was already injured and out for a couple months.

Then, a week and a half later I decided to deal Greinke after we went under 500. I got the closer Osuna And Estrada for him. Osuna yiung with an A potential. Estrada I will lose after the year is up. This clears the cap for me.

I have had a good deal of injuries as well. Miller out for a couple months same with Walker earlier in the year. Drury was out early, but healthy now. Marte out for the year. Will get Owings and Ahmed back soon both were out a couple of months.

I picked Hochevar to be my closer. This ended poorly and is part of the reason I picked up a young closer with the Greinke deal.

Therefore, I think it is better to deal some guys because I think there is still enough talent to compete and it gives me a ton of room to spend in free agency to hopefully compete for the next couple of seasons. I am also putting emphasis on building up my farm system with some young talent. Considering moving Peralta or Tomas with the addition of Puig who is currently still on the DL.

Side note, Jake Lamb has 30 homers before the end of July. I am ecstatic about his production.

I use a similar strategy as you to sim. I use a dice and roll between 1-6. 1 is the very next game 2 the following and so on and so forth. A six means I sum five in a row and roll again. I have really enjoyed this system and I get a pretty good number of games over the course of the season with each starter.

honestly Id work on redoing that middle infield anyway u can. Im a Giants fan and watching the Dbacks all the time every year I know theyll crash and burn due to the lack of talent in the middle of the field. Id personally trade Tomas to do that. Use Drury, Pollock and Peralta in the OF and at the very least go get 2 vacuums. Lamb's defense is horrible so if u can offset that youd be fine. The top of that lineup is set so go get urself some fielders at the least and bat them 6,7 or 7,8 cuz i imagine u got Pollock, Peralta, Goldy, Lamb as ur top 4 or 5 in some sort of that order.

I've kinda let rosters and things get sorted so I've been rocking on DD lately....I may wait til the next update to the game to see more kinks get worked out but I will take time and work on the 1.0 rosters to get the team payrolls more to the actual amounts and go from there....if i cant then ill be going to 1.75. I will be restarting regardless with my Giants....normally i dont go off of real life stuff but since i am restarting i will end of doing just that. So thanks to MadBum I will have a huge obstacle and they are turning out to be maybe the best rebuild/go for it team considering the talent and lack of minors talent except Arroyo is absolutely going off in AAA. The mess in LF is an issue but I will do the fix that i think should happen and thats putting Nunez in LF and letting Conor be at 3rd until Arroyo is called up. Ill either have Stratton or Blach work out of the #5 SP slot until Bum is back 2 months down the road. I'll probably sim to the date and have their actually record which wont help matters out either.

That is exactly my top four in my lineup (although it only lasted a couple months before the injury bug hit us). I think moving on from Tomas makes sense and I agree that the middle infield needs a serious upgrade as well as the bullpen.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that I can find a solid middle infielder in free agency and if not will try to put together a trade in the off-season (possibly andrelton simmons?)
