Texas Rangers Update: End of Season 2/Spring Training Season 3 MOM

Well season 2 came to an end. We played well down the stretch and finished at 82-80 but it wasn't enough to secure a Wild Card birth. The Houston Astros won the division while the Angels took one of the Wild Cards. Houston went on to go to the Work Series and held a 3-1 series lead before they blew it to the Washington Nationals. I am just glad it wasn't the Dodgers finally. In MLB 16 I played 3 seasons and the Dodgers went to every World Series winning 2 of them. They then went to my first one in 17 and won that one. This time Houston got them in the ALDS.

The offseason was Ok. I lost Jake Diekman. I offered him a qualified contract but he elected to leave. The one thing that killed my team last year was Starting Pitching. I was first in Baseball in Home Runs and second in total runs scored. Joey Gallo was named Rangers player of the year belting 37 dingers and totaling 99 RBI's. My team looks like this heading in to spring

    Starters

    1. Tanner Roark (14 win season in what was an up and down season. Started 7-1 before going 7-9 to wrap up season)
    2. Jeremy Hellickson- Terrible year last year with ERA at 5.6
    3. Martin Perez- 4.97 ERA , debated on whether to offer him a contract this off season
    4. Brett Anderson- Off season FA signing
5- Derek Holland- Returns to Texas

    RP

Closer- Addison Reed- Good season after getting him in July Trade last year
SU- Sam Dyson- Solid year ERA just over 2
    SU- Mike Minor
    MR- Nick Rumbelow
    MR- Dario Alvaraz
LR- Rookie- Rodney Hood ( Top 50 prospect)
    LR- Anthony Bass

    Starters
C- Derek Norris- signed after I decided to let Chirinos walk because of age
    1B- Pedro Alvaraz- 28 HR's last year
2b- Odor- Coming off a 35 HR season
    ss- Elvis
    3B- Gallo
    CF- Mazara- Hit 290 with 27 HR's
LF- Matt Adams- Signed to FA contract
    RF- Choo
    DH- Profar

I am to loyal a fan to go with anyone else other then Texas. Just like allot of arm chair coaches out there I want to see if I was the manager or Gm could I lead them to the playoffs or Championship. So far after 12 iterations of the Show its NO. I've never even been to the World Series

        End of April -
        2018

Sitting at 13-12 after the first month. 4 games back of the Tigers who lead the division and the AL at 17-8 thanks to a 9-1 record in the last 10 games. The White Sox have the worst record in the AL at 8-18. While the Dodgers 20-7 and the Braves 8-17 are best and worst in the NL. We went 11-11 against the division including 2-4 against the Tigers. We wont play 22 more division games until our first series after the all star break.

Offense struggled to score runs again to start the season. 87 in 25 games puts us at 26th in the league. As a team we are hitting .248/298/.385 (16th, 20th, 19th). Once again we have the least strikeouts with just 162. Next best is Boston with 184. Mike Moustakas has been the best player by WAR with 1.2. He is hitting .312/.387/516 with 5 HR and 13 RBI. Worst is Bubba Starling at -0.4. Him Franklin Gutierrez and Corey Toups really haven't gotten much consistent playing time though. Drew Butera broke his arm on the 16th. Put him on the 60 day DL and he should be back around the All Star break. Peter O'Brien was called up to replace him. He was hitting .349/.440/.837 with 6 HR in 12 games @ AAA.

Pitching was much better. Our team ERA of 3.48 is 9th overall and 3rd in the AL. Our 4 shutouts are 4th in the league and we have allowed the least amount of walks. A lot of that is thanks to Danny Duffy. He is 4-1 with a 0.75 ERA in 36 IP. Jason Hammel has the highest ERA at 4.75. The other starters are all under 3.75. Bullpen has been good as well for the most part. Seth Maness has the lowest ERA at 1.42. Matt Strahm is at 2.19. Herrera and Soria are both under 3. And then we have Travis Wood and Scott Alexander at 6.17 and 5.73. Ian Kennedy got hurt on the 20th. Went on the 10 day DL and returned on the 30th. Kyle Zimmer took his spot and in his only start have up 6 runs in 2 IP.

We get 18 of our 28 games at home in May. And only 7 of the games are against a team currently over .500. If the pitching can keep it up and the offense gets going we should be able to stay pretty close to .500. Not all that confident in the offense though. It was about the same last year though and they got really hot so i guess anything can happen.

2017 Colorado Rockies: Whats not to like about Colorado

I began in Spring Training, played two games won both one was won on a Trevor Story walkoff HR in the ninth. I then decided that, spring training was a waste of time.

I then began to play Opening Day. This game was a battle as Tyler Anderson v. Zach Davies turned out to be a gem for opening day. The pitching duel saw Anderson work 6 innings and throw 9K's. Davies while giving up hits managed to keep just 1 run on the board for the Rockies.

As both teams entered the 9th knotted at 2, both teams squandered opportunities to take the lead. Colorado even leaving the bases full, at one point in extras.

However it would be a Mark Reynolds 14th inning solo shot that would allow Holland to shut the door. Reliever Mike Dunn picked up the win with 8Ks.

Charlie Blackmon led the way on 4-6 batting with a run scored.

I don't know what it is but the CPU in 9th inning always hits. No matter where in the order. It's driving me crazy
LMAO, just finished a critical situation where I hit a two-run blast in the top of the 9th, only to see it swindled by the 8th hitter, a pinch hitter, and the leadoff man.

            I've noticed this too.

              Draft Day - 2018

The first 2 weeks of May were good. The 3 weeks since. Not so good... We now sit at 29-29. 11 games behind the Tigers for 1st and 2 games back of a wild card. Things were looking very good halfway through May. We had just won our 6th straight game. Were 10-3 on the month and 8 games over .500. The next week wasnt all that bad. We went 3-4 with a series win over the Tigers. And then it all went down hill. We finished of a series win over the Jays. Got swept by the Yankees. Lost 2 of 3 to the Rangers and Astros and have lost the first 2 games in a 3 game series against the A's.

The offense stepped up a bit after shuffling some things around. 132 runs over 33 games. Went from 3.4 runs per game to 4. HR have been a big contributor to that. Hunter Dozier has really found his swing lately. Leads the team in HR now with 15. Hitting .277/.318/.545. Also leads the team in Hits, RBI, Walks and Doubles. And would be Rookie of The Year if the season ended today. Alex Gordon has his AVG up to .281. Brandon Moss is hitting .286 with 12 HR. Moose and Salvy are tied with 11 HR each. We are getting pretty much no help from everyone else though. Raul Mondesi broke his foot on May 5th. Whit Merrifield was called up to replace him. In 53 at bats he is hitting .132/.164/.245. Peter O'Brien is hitting .136/.136/.136 in 22 at bats replacing Butera. Franklin Guttierez only has 57 at bats and has done nothing with them hitting .175/.254/.228 with no HR. The only reason he was signed was to mash lefties and he cant seem to do it. And the worst part is the guys that can replace them in the minors really arent doing any better down there.

The pitching has taken a step back since April. Team ERA has jumped almost half a run to 4.95. Have only given up 49 HR though. 2nd best behind the Cubs. Ian Kennedy's ERA has jumped to 5.52. Jason Hammel is at 4.21. And in 17.1 IP since coming off the DL Jason Vargas is at 5.71. Duffy still doing great at 1.82 with a 0.90 WHIP. While Minor and Karns both have an ERA in the 3's. Gonna let Vargas and Kennedy both get another start. Depending on how it goes one could end up getting DFA. Out in the pen things are about the same. Herrera and Strahm both have an ERA in the 3.60's. Seth Maness is at 3.21. We released Travis Wood and called up Brian Flynn. He has a 5.40 ERA in 5 IP so far. Scott Alexander isnt any better with a 5.12 ERA in 19.1 IP. We are sending him down today and calling up Kevin McCarthy (1.47 ERA, 0.82 WHIP in AAA). And Joakim Soria is the best out there with a 2.38 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in 22.2 IP.

31 games left before the all star break. Should know by then if we need to try and move the few pieces we have. Only 9 of the games are against a team with a winning record right now. Should be able to stay around .500 but that may not be whats best for the future.

              2018 Draft

This was a big one for us. We had 9 picks thanks to comp picks we got in free agency. We ended up going really heavy on starting pitching. And we did pretty well i think.

In the 1st round we took 18 year old SP Elroy Dowling. Lefty that can throw in the low to mid 90's with his 4-seam. Also throws a curve, slider and running FB. B potential and comes in with a 66 overall so it shouldn't take all that long to get up to the majors.

With our first comp pick we took 23 year old SP Mariano Parra. 6'4 lefty out of California. Only 3 pitches with a 4-seam, 2-seam and change. Sits in the low 90's. Not gonna strike a lot of guys out but also doesnt walk many. Most major league ready guy we took at 73 overall already with B potential.

With the second comp pick we took 19 year old SP Hank Steele. A little small at 5'10 but weights 208. sits in the mid 90's with a 4-seam, 2-seam, Change and Sinker. Another lefty that comes in not all that far away from the majors with a 64 overall with B potential.

With our 3rd and final comp pick we once again took a SP. 20 year old Jose Ramiro. The 6'5 righty throws a 4-seam, Change, Curve and Slider. Not great at any one thing but not flat bad at anything either. Projects more as a #4 or 5 at 62 overall with C potential.

Did you think we were done taking starter? With our 2nd round pick with took 23 year old SP Geraldo Macias. Almost exactly the same as Ramiro just 4 inches shorter. Most likely a #4 or 5. Comes in at 60 overall with C potential.

With our 3rd round pick we finally took a position player. 19 year old 3B Richard Pectol. Might be the most interesting pick to me. Could probably come in right now and hit .280 with 15-20 HR. But he cant field to save his life. If he could improve there a bit he may fit in more at 2B. But if he cant he should be a solid DH. 71 overall with C potential.

In the 4th we stuck with a position guy and picked up 19 year old 2B Fernando Arias. Fairly fast, strong accurate arm and can hit a bit. The ball may not leave the infield but he can make contact. Not a great defender though and not really suited for the DH and not expected to get much better. Worst pick of the draft for us. 63 overall, D potential.

In the 5th we went back to pitching this time taking 19 year old RP Elvis Pereira. Definitely a guy that needs to get you out with command cause he sure isnt gonna blow it by anyone struggling to hit the low 90's. Throws a 4-seam, Change, Slider and 12-6 Cruve. 59 overall, C potential.

And with our last pick we had to take just 1 more SP. 20 year old lefty Pablo De Los Santos. Almost the complete opposite of Pereira. He struggles to not throw a pitch above 90 sitting in the upper 90's with his 4-seam. Also throws a Curve, Sinker and 2-seam. Lowest potential of the starters we took with a mid C. Would love for him to improve that though with that electric fast ball.

All in all it was good i think. Probably wont need to take another starter for 5 years but i guess you can never have to much of that.

Dont think I mentioned who we took last year so here is a quick update on them.

1st round pick 20 year old RP Luther Hammons - 0-1, 0.92 ERA, 0.97 WHIP with 15 K's in 19.2 IP in AA.

2nd round pick 20 year old CF Mark Springer - .269/.314/.446, 5 HR, 21 RBI, 11 SB in AA

3rd round pick 19 year old CF Terrance Lombard - .333/.366/.487, 0 HR, 11 RBI, 6 SB in AA. Currently on the DL with a broken Forearm.

4th round pick 22 year old SP Freddy Harman - Currently in single A with no appearances in AA or AAA.

              5th round puck 21 year old SP Doug Sanders - 2-1, 1.87 ERA, 1.15 WHIP with 35 K's in 43.1 IP.

6th round pick 20 year old RP Otis Villalona - Currently in A. 0-2, 5.68 ERA, 1.89 WHIP, 14 K's in 12.2 IP in AA.

The Nats signed him for six years before I could even make an offer. Same with Machado and the Orioles.

I'm not sure if this has been seen before but somehow my Tigers franchise has some sort of morale glitch.

Every single starter in my lineup is listed as a "bench" player in the Player Morale screen. Same goes for the rotation - all 5 starters are listed as "Bullpen".

                          Any way to fix this?

This happened to me once. I just restarted the game and it was fine when it came back on.

Just won a VERY tough NL West

My Young arms led the way for the team

Cal Quantrill - 20-6, 2.29 ERA (NL ROY)
                              Anderson Espinoza - 14-4, 3.53 ERA
                              Dinelson Limet - 7-2, 3.71 ERA
                              Luis Perdomo - 12-5, 3.10 ERA

                              Wil Myers - .263, 38 HR, 94 RBI
                              Marcus Semien - .248, 30 HR, 76 RBI

                                Overview

Last season during the start of the playoffs I moved to A&S's sliders and promptly got swept by the Cubbies in the divisional round. I kept them going into the new season and am happy with the results. I played every game in April and from may onward will do a play one son three routine. The middle of April we were really strong as we won 9 in row which included a awesome 19-5 win over our division Rivals the Nationals. In that game we got 25 hits which I believe is my most in a single game by far. After the winning streak however, we went 3-5 to wrap up the month of April.

                                .408 AVG/9 RBI/6 SB

He Ranks first in the the majors in batting average (2nd is on our team as well). He had a long hitting streak going back to last season which almost reached 20 games although I don't remember when he went a game with out a hit.

                                2. Christian Yelich CF 90 OVR
                                .375 AVG/4 HR/14 RBI/4 SB

Yelich has missed nine games in April due to taking a fly ball off the dome (concussion) but he is still 3rd on the team in runs batted in. Looks like we will get him back for the first game of May hopefully he will stay healthy.

                                3.Giancarlo Stanton RF 92 OVR
                                .326 AVG/7 HR/20 RBI

The face of our franchise continues to play very well. Second on the team in home runs and runs batted in. Could improve on his strikeout numbers but other than that he is solid.

4.Jung Ho Kang SS 83 OVR
                                .393 AVG/14 HR/33 RBI

He leads the majors in both Home runs and runs batted in. He led in average for a while until Gordon took over that spot. He has been fantastic and we hope he can stay consistent through the season and avoid injury.

                                5.Justin Bour 1B 82 OVR
                                .301 AVG/4 HR/8 RBI

Bour has been pretty good, much better than his bench replacement. Nothing spectacular but good to have in the lineup.

                                6. Marcell Ozuna LF 86 OVR
                                .272 AVG/3 HR/13 RBI

Ozuna has been alright. He does seem to pop out more often than not in important situations.

                                7. Maikel Franco 3B 80 OVR
                                .184 avg/2 HR/6 RBI

Traded my rookie 3B for him...regret that so much now. Great in the field terrible with the bat.

                                .301 AVG/2 HR/8 RBI

Pretty solid at the bottom of the lineup. More often than not he does his job of not making the pitcher lead off the next inning.

He has been better than his record suggests although it's not bad he should at least be 4-1 but his last game pitcher was our only time to be shut out in April while he allowed only a single run.

He definitely helps rest the bullpen as he always seems to go deep into his games.

                                3-0 35.1 IP/29 SO/4.33 ERA

Second has ERA among our starters yet has the second best record. He does get hit pretty good but keeps the team in the game for the most part.

                                4-0 35.0 IP/32 SO/3.60 ERA

He has continued on the success he saw last year. Maybe he will get 20 wins this season!
