The first is that there's a pretty massive jump from the NPB to the MLB. It's believed that the NPB is around on par with the AA level at the MLB level. While players sometimes make the jump from AA to the MLB with success, it's also not like it's a simple jump, either. That's a two-level jump. Ohtani's bat is a bit more suspect than his arm in terms of his MLB projectivity. There are scouts who are all over the board on his bat. And I'm fairly certain teams were willing to give him the ability to hit (be it as a DH or a LF) because they needed a sales pitch that enticed him (Ohtani wanted to hit). With how IFA spending occurs with the CBA currently, there was little separation in what a team could or couldn't offer him.

Secondly, Ohtani barely pitched last year. Ohtani's arm was hurt and he threw 25.1 IP last season. He's thrown more in the past (he averaged around 150 IP the years prior), but he essentially missed all of last year on the mound. On top of that, he's making the large talent jump. It really shouldn't surprise anyone that someone who missed most of last year and is making a large jump in talent, has struggled a bit.

In the end, I think he'll be fine. He's got the stuff. Not many SP's can hit the velocity levels that Ohtani can. He may need to be babied a bit (6 man rotation, especially. He threw once a week in Japan. In America he'll be asked to throw, eventually, once every five days) but I think he'll build back on the mound. Offensively, he'll likely be on the merit system eventually. If he hits, he'll remain as a potential DH option. If he doesn't, he'll be slowly phased out now that the Angels have his rights for 6 years and it'll be hard for him to complain as long as he was given a fair shot and others are out preforming him.
One correction: the NPB is largely considered a level above AAA but under the MLB.

Soooooo the same as last year. Guess I shouldn't have expected anything else. Guess it just happened too late in the cycle

so basically burn a sub in the first innings for it to work.... ohh well I can see Luis Valbuena being subbed out quite a lot and wasted this year lol

Yep, they did nothing. Can't start a pitcher at DH, and can't edit secondary positions for a pitcher. Pretty disappointing.

It begs the question why they bothered putting Ohtani in the game then doesn't it? and why he got such special treatment because it seems pointless now.

at least now we know why they ignored 400 questions about 2 way players

Told ya lol. It’s because of the hype around him. They wanted him in on release. I hate being right sometimes. But it just seemed so obvious to me that it wouldn’t be in because if it was they would’ve mentioned it. It would’ve been something they could market as a new feature. Something they would at least allude to in a stream. Anything. Dangit. This is highly disappointing. Thing that sucks the most is if Ohtani doesn’t succeed this season at the plate, this will probably not get added going forward. Not until they’re almost forced to add it because of how impactful a two way player is.

He’s still gonna be in the game going forward, but hopefully they allow it so you can use him the way he’s meant to be. I think you guys are right though, about adding him in quickly. We’ve never had a player get a face scan the same year they’ve entered the league. It’s pretty obvious they wanted to get him in due to the hype and all, and not because he practices at Peoria, or convenience.

Probably not in coz of some DD reason or some crap, you know that’s all the focus now. It’s the reason switch pitcher was never editable

Just seen some stream on youtube that had him as DH. Didn’t see how he got him in the lineup however

Damn, this sucks for Franchise then.

Cuz I'm sure the AI wont sub him in... Disappointed.

I am sure it would be a significant code change to make the AI managers sub Ohtani into games as a PH so it likely will only be human gamers playing with the Angels who can use Ohtani the way he was used in Japan. So all this fuss for one player, one player who may not even make it at the Major League level. This appears like a real half ###ed approach all across the board to make some unproven player into one of the game's elite players before he has even established himself as an elite player in the real world.

At the coding level the SDS developers have my respect (BTW I am also a seasoned software developer). No it's the people higher up in SDS management levels who have created this mess. Every year SDS tells us their hands are tied, under no circumstance can they put someone into their game until they have played a regular season game at the MLB level. However for Ohtani, an exception was made? and not only is Ohtani in the game, SDS have made him into being an above average talent when it comes to his in game skills. He is struggling this Spring. He can't hit, he can't pitch. The only reason why the Angels say he will be in the starting line up is because they see dollars signs and think they can sell extra tickets. But what happens if the Angels decide he's just not good enough, he's hurting the team on the field beyond what his potential ticket sales may bring in. What then? Should SDS spend all this development on someone who might be heading back to Japan soon?

There are a lot of good things about this game. But this release is also a mess at the same time. Oh and LOL ... I opened up my bonus DD packs last night and I didn't even look at who my players were because I did not care. I only opened the packs so that the damn game would stop bugging me that I had unopened packs every time I launched the game.

I don't understand why online play and DD would be a reason to not allow editable switch pitcher, starting a pitcher at DH, or editing a secondary position for a pitcher. I know in the past people have mentioned cheese, but wouldn't that just be "greyed out" in those modes anyway? You can't edit attributes for players in those modes, right? Why wouldn't these things work the same way?(Sorry, moved to an area with no high speed internet, so lag time has made me an offline player)

Good thing I use 30 team control for Franchise.

So I'll just have to start the games Angels play, then pinch hit Ohtani in the DH spot.

It will suck and probably get old, but it will work.
