Bard, another Angels question, what would it take to get Dinelson Lamet from SD? I imagine he's fairly valuable

I want to see if I'm doing this right so I can be more helpful in this thread as well as maybe have less question myself about deals. I decided to use Rougie as an example.

      5 (Rem. Contracted Years) x 1.4 (WAR Average Past 3 Seasons) x 7.5 (Everything I find suggests 1 WAR = 7.5) = 52.5 Million.

      52.5 - 55.2 = -2.7 Mill Surplus

Is that correct? If so, I wouldn't imagine that a 24 year old second baseman who can hit you near 30+ HR a year would have negative value? Despite coming off of a poor season. How do we factor in poor seasons? Also, do we have any set standard for how much surplus can bring you in a return?

      Example. 15 Mill Surplus = Top 100 Prospect | 30 Mill Surplus = Top 50 Prospect | 45 Mill Surplus = Top 50 + Top 100 Prospect

Believe you need to use WAR total over the contracted years, not just one season

Are you sure? I thought it was an average. If you do in fact use contracted years, this is how it looks for Rougie:

          5 (Rem. Contract Years) x 4.2 (WAR) x 7.5 = 157.5

          157.5 - 55.2 = 102.3 Surplus

Surely that can't be the case?

            Okay Odor.

Probably will bring in 1.05 WAR over the next few years, maybe more but he needs to prove that.

He has $41.25 million remaining...right? If not that can be corrected easily.

            1.05 × 5 = 5.25 × 8.5 (WAR value I use) = $44.625 million

$44.625 - $41.25 million = ~$3.375 million of value. The guy is not very valuable at all. If he was making peanuts it would be a different story. Home runs aren't very valuable anymore. He can't walk to save his life, and his defense is mediocre.

That's weird. I always turn on force trades however to avoid these weird occurrences.

Thanks for the explanation! I think the 1.05 may be a bit generous, just my opinion though haha. It's HR or bust for him.

That is useful, I don't necessarily disagree with your assessment. This is probably a bad year to review his worth given he had a such bad season last year. Using your numbers, I looked at Cole Hamels.

                    3.1 x 2 x 8.5 = 52.7 Mill

                    52.7 - 43.5 = 9.2 Surplus

                    Adrian Beltre -

                    5.8 x 1 x 8.5 = 49.3 Mill

                    49.3 - 18 = 31.3 Mill Surplus

I guess that is why I'm trying to find a base prospect package for surplus.

~$22.35 million in surplus. Still pretty decent because he is so cheap and has three years of control.

                          Alright thanks.

I’m trying to find a lefty power hitter preferably a first baseman or outfielder who is still pretty young or under control. The guys I’m looking at are Conforto, Joc, Gallo, Mazara, Bour, Brandon Belt.

Can I get any of those guys without giving up Vlad, Bo, Alford? I would be willing to move pillar or Devon Travis for any of the younger guys if that would help value wise.

                          Thanks

Anthony Alford + lotto ticket for Bour would be the simplest trade there.

Conforto, Gallo, Mazara are all unlikely.

Alford for Joc works value wise but is a little weird for the Dodgers to do.
