Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

Really struggling with my franchise this year. Playing with the Blue Jays and off to a rough start. I have a hard time playing with my favourite team because I just can’t make the moves I know I need to.

I’ve tried several other teams to scratch the itch. Reds, Mets, Marlins and Pirates but I keep coming back to my Jays team.

We’re 16-21 in early May playing every pitch, every game.

It’s been tough. It’s been a grind. It’s been fantastic.

2022 White Sox Franchise Game 2 ALDS

Game 2 featured a pitching match up of Baltimore Rookie Robert Thomas and Michael Kopech for the Sox. Sox offense got to Thomas quickly with a 2 run homer from Yoenis Cespedes in the first inning for the first of his 2 homers in the game. Sox would add on in the fifth on a Manny Machado error followed by an Elvis Andrus single to push lead to 4-0 after 5. Despite loading the bases with nobody out in the top of the 6th the Orioles couldn't score as Sox starter Michael Kopech would strike out the next 3 batters to strand the bases juiced. Jeremy Ramirez would add another run for the Sox in the bottom half of the 6th with an RBI single and Yoenis Cespedes would hit his second homer on the first pitch of the bottom of the 8th to push the lead to the eventual final score of 6-0.

I dropped the first game in KC after a strong 4th inning in which the Royals put up 5 runs. I came back and won game 2 in KC with a tight 3-2 victory. Andrew Miller racked up his 29th save of the year.

Started the first game of the series in Cincinnati with a 4-1 victory over the Reds to increase my win streak to 2 games. Again, these are very important games here in August with a very tight Wild Card chase. It's definitely getting down to crunch time.

I'm about to boot up and play at least one more game if not two. Current Record: 59-61.

          *BASEBALL HEAVEN*

          ***

          FROM THE CARDINALS PERSPECTIVE

A 2019 DREAM-CHISE WITH ALL LEGENDS INCORPORATED INTO THEIR RESPECTIVE ORGANIZATIONS

          ***

For sake of catching up to where I am presently in my season, I’m going to do my best to synapse the important details so far.

As could have been predicted, the Cubs have proven to be the biggest challenge for these Cardinals. The Redbirds actually took 2 out of 3 at Wrigley in their first series. All hard fought games. But the Cubs swept the next 2, and are presently 10 games up in the central just past the all star break. They made the big Rizzo for Sanchez move with the Yankees and just before the break traded Addison Russell to SD for Franmil Reyes! This move was huge because Russell obviously had no place in that lineup, but Reyes immediately plugged in for the biggest and really only under performer so far Heyward! The Cubs have now also decided they are done losing games at all it seems. Allowing zero opportunities to gain ground and capitalizing on every chance to widen the gap. The Cards have played them tough every game they’ve had but fell short. Very intimidating challenge if there’s any chance at the division.

The rest of the league is really starting to show the obvious powerhouses in each division as well. The Nationals have a 10 game lead over the Braves in the east. The Dodgers have close to 10 games on the Giants who hold the top wild card spot at the moment. The Cardinals have the other just a half game up on the Braves. They would REALLY rather not have to play either of those teams in a 1 game wild card playoff.

Yankees are like 15 up on Boston, and the Indians have a bigger lead in the central! Houston leads the west but only by 3 games over Oakland and Texas is 5 back.

          Cardinals pitching

Gibson, Micholas and Martinez have been fantastic! The other spots have been hit and miss. Presently Reyes and Gomber with Wainwright work long relief and spot starts. Wacha and Flaherty have been showing promise in Memphis recently though. The back end of the pen has remained absolutely dominant! Miller has been battling with Gagne and Doolittle all season for the lead in saves. Presently 3rd with 26 and the leader at 28. Also in contention for reliever of the year award.
Middle relief is still the concern, although it has improved since Gant got his chance due to a short injury to Gregorson. Leone was sent to Memphis when he returned and Gant has became the go to middle guy since. The Braves came asking about Dakota Hudson who was buried deep in the Cardinals organization anyway at Springfield. They offered up Aroldys Vizcyano who was at their aaa affiliate as well due to their deep bullpen! The fit seemed perfect for the Cardinals immediate need for a strong middle guy, so the deal was done. But Vizcyano has yet to instill any true confidence in his new role. He will look unhittable for 2 outs them seemingly like clockwork give up a long ball every time. Still overall that group seems at least mildly improved. Brebbia is now closing games in Memphis.

          Cardinals position players

The opening day lineup has remained mostly unchanged, but Carpenter has struggled immensely with the bat, so early on the Cards moved Hornsby to 3rd and put Wong at 2nd for most of the first half. But still getting Carp significant time and at bats waiting for him to figure it out. Wong was fantastic! Especially defensively, but even pulled his weight at the plate until about mid June when he went ice cold. In an attempt to get more power from their lineup they sent him to Memphis to work it out and brought Gyorko up who had been destroying PCL pitching. Carp would be given the everyday opportunity again and is finally showing signs of coming around. Hit 3 homeruns against the Pirates at Sportsman’s Park a couple days ago. Also the lack of power from Pujols, and the consistency of Goldshmidt every time he’s called on earned Goldy the everyday 1B job for now as well! Hornsby by far is the first half MVP though. Leads the batting race with a .390 average and provided more walk off heroics than anyone could dream of, including a clutch walk off grand slam against the Braves. Absolute 9th inning money and team hero! Love that guy! It was a shame he didn’t get an all star invite! We had 3 pitchers that all represented well though in Gibson, Sutter and Miller!

That’s the quick rundown of where these Cardinals stand at the moment. About to play the rubber match of a 3 game set against Pittsburgh at home, then off to Crosley field to start 4 against Cincinnati!

              Injury bug strikes again

The injury bug has once again bitten the Cardinals. This time its Luke Weaver, who was placed on the 10 Day IL due to an abdominal strain. Weaver left his last start in the 5th inning after having pitched a gem. He was 4 1/3 way thru allowing 2 hits, 0 ER, 0 walks, and had 5 strikeouts.

Weaver has been a pleasant surprise since being called up to take the place of Miles Mikolas when he went to the IL after he replaced Michael Wacha who is on the 60 Day IL.

Kyle Funkhouser was recalled from Memphis to take Weaver's spot in the rotation.

Troy Tulowitzki also suffered an injury straining his forearm. The Cards are hopeful he will avoid his 3rd stint on the IL since the season began. St.Louis is going to see where he is after they finish the series in Arizona. If he's still ailing the Cards will likely place him on the 10 Day IL and make a corresponding move.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

My 2025 Cubs have had a pretty successful last home stand before the all-star break. We swept the Cardinals and took 3 of 4 from the Division Leading Reds. We have also reached our seasonal high water mark of ten over an sit at 48-38. We are 1 GB of the Reds but have 2 games in hand, so we are tied in the loss column.

Morgan Duran hit his 300th career HR and now sits at .255 with 23 Hrs and 67 knocked in with 20 steals on the season. Kris Bryant is currently at .265 with 27 hrs and 64 rbis.

The big story though is Bryce Harper. As I said previously, he was my one gimme player (80 rated A potenital phenom) on my 2014 Cubs because at that time I really didn't have a clue about how good KB and the other prospects were gonna be so Harper was gonna be my face of the franchise. Last year in his 12th year he was starting to show some signs of decline (.265-37-114). Still a nice year but hes been a player that flirted with .300 and 40 hrs annually. Anyways, this year he is having his finest season (even including his 2018 or 2019 triple crown....really cant remember the specific year I'll have to look it up ) Currently he is hitting .335 with 30 Hrs and 90 Rbis with a ridiculous .750 slug. Feels very Steriod-era ish, might have to sit him down and have the converstaion Seriously though, it kinda defies logic because hes like 91 Ovr now and his Con R and Pwr R are ridiculous 91, 92 respectfully but his Con L and Pwr L are in the 60's. I'm expecting a slowdown in the second half but I'm just gonna ride it now.

Ive got one 2 game series vs the White Sox at wrigley and then its on to the break.

                  End of Season - 2020

Haven't had much time to play or update over the last few weeks. Managed to get to the end of the season and we were much better than expected. Sitting at 46-45 coming out of the all-star break went on a 45-26 run to finish the season at 91-71. Unfortunately, that wasn't quite enough as we finished second in the Central to the 98-64 Indians. While the Yankees and Rays put up 99 and 98 wins respectively to take the Wild Card spots. The Angels and A's finished the season tied at 94-68. They played a game 163 to decide the division winner with the loser missing the playoffs.

                  Standings
                  Spoiler

                  The offense was slightly above average for the season. We hit .254/.318/.419 (15th/22nd/13th) with 686 Runs (13th), 278 Doubles (5th), 40 Triples (2nd), 183 Home Runs (18th), 129 Stolen Bases (3rd) with a 68% Success Rate (4th), 496 Walks (25th) and 1256 Strikeouts (8th).

Adalberto Mondesi solidified himself as one of the best Short Stops in baseaball hitting .300/.355/.539 with 33 Doubles, 16 Triples and 25 HR.

Jorge Soler had the best season of his career by far. Playing in 149 games while leading the team in Runs, Home Runs, RBI and Walks. And of course, it was a contract year...

Ryan O'Hearn continued his assault of right-handed pitchers. 34 of his 35 Home Runs were hit off of them. He did hit .243 against lefties so he is getting better. Just cant hit for power.

Salvy still hasn't had a season with a .300+ OBP since 2013. He did get better as the season went on. And he did miss all of 2019 so hopefully, he can pick up where he left off next year.

Whit struggled for the first 3 or 4 months of the season struggling to get his OBP over .300. Improved over the last couple months but still had his worst season at the plate since becoming an everyday player. His baserunning was still fantastic as he stole 42 bases with just under a 90% success rate.

Bubba Starling had a lost season with multiple injuries limiting him to 48 games. And with his performance in those games his time as a Royal is close to running out. He will probably get one more chance in spring training but if he doesnt win a spot on opening day he will probably be DFA.

                  Stats
                  Spoiler

The pitching was much than the **** show we put out there last year. We improved our ERA from 4.45 in 2019 to 3.60 this year. Good for 9th in the majors and 2nd in the AL. We had 5 Complete Games (11th), 15 Shutouts (7th), 59 Saves (1st), 13 Blown Saves (3rd), 169 Home Runs Allowed (6th), 452 Walks (1st) and 1119 Strikeouts (30th).

Jake Junis was once again our best starter. For the 2nd year in a row he went over 200 innings pitched. Improved his ERA by just almost a full run as well as improving his K/9, BB/9 and HR/9.

Jorge Lopez had a pretty surprising season after putting up an ERA over 5 over the first 90 innings of his career. His biggest issue is not having the stamina to go dep into games. But if he can continue to put up ERAs under 3 its not that big of a deal.

Duffy and Cole Hamels had okay seasons. Though you can start to see the end of Hamels career. his 137.2 IP was his lowest since his rookie season. Duffy was better than he was in 2019 but as the highest paid player on the team, you would expect a little more. He is under contract for 1 more season. And will be 33 in the first year of a new deal so unless he looks amazing he will probably be gone after next year.

Desclafani fell off as the season went on but was our best starter through the all star break with un ERA well under 3. Had the most innings pitched in his career with his lowest WHIP as well.

The bullpen was pretty good for the most part. The main 5 guys or so were at least. Kevin MCCarthy ended up being the closer to finish the year as Zimmer struggled down the stretch. McCarthy has slowly turned in to one of the better relievers in the game. Lovelady put up a 1.6 WHIP but was able to work around it for the most part. After giving up 4 homers in April he didnt allow another over his last 51.2 innings. Really needs to cut down on the walks next year though.

2022 White Sox Franchise Game 3 ALDS

Game 3 was a nice pitchers duel with Baltimore Ace Dylan Bundy on the mound vs Omar Salgado for the Sox. Baltimore take early 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first on a Trey Mancini RBI single. That would be the only run either starter would allow. Baltimore took the 1-0 lead into the 9th trying to avoid the sweep, but Sox 3B Jeremy Ramirez would have other ideas and would tie the game on a RBI double against Oriole Closer Mychal Givens to force extras. With Charlie Tilson on 2nd with 2 in the top of the 10th Jose Abreu's RBI single followed by a Yoenis Cespedes RBI double would give the Sox a 3-1 lead going in the bottom of the 10th, where Sox closer Nate Jones would shut the door to send the Sox to the ALCS with a 3 game sweep of the Orioles. The Sox will face the winner of the Boston and Oakland Series.

                      Cardinals sweep Diamondbacks

The Cardinals got their road trip off to a good start by sweeping the Diamondbacks. The Cardinals had hot bats in the first two games of the series putting up a total of 19 runs. In the series finale, the Cardinals pitching was dominant, as Carlos Martinez had his best outing in over a month. He got a no decision, but did go 6 innings giving up 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 7. He did issue 3 free passes.

Harrison Bader had an outstanding series going 8 for 13 with 3 walks, 5 RBI, and 4 steals. He was responsible for the rally to come back in the series finale. He doubled to lead off the 7th with the Cards down 2-1. When Corey Ray popped up his bunt attempt in front of the pitcher's mound, Yosmany Tomas (3rd baseman) charged and caught it, leaving 3rd base vacant. Bader took off as soon as the ball was caught and easily beat Tomas in a foot race. Next batter Singleton hit a soft liner to left that looked as though it was going to drop, but Starling Marte made an outstanding diving catch. Again, Bader and his speed to advantage of the situation to tag up and beat the throw home to tie the game.

Next up is the Rockies. Cardinals hope to continue their hot hitting and dominant pitching as they look to turn things around before the first of July.

Finally an update I feel comfortable hitting the like button on for your team lol! I absolutely follow your team CB but didn’t feel right liking your recent posts about the struggles you’ve had. Glad to see a bounce back series and maybe the momentum will carry on for a stretch

                            Thanks man!

It's been rough here lately. Hoping to at least rattle off 7 out of 10 or something better. The Pirates are freaking on fire right now, as they've won 8 straight I believe.

If the damn injury bug would leave us alone, I think we'll be ok, but that is something every club deals with.

Ozzie Albies has been a fantastic addition to this club. He is for sure our SS of the future. We like guys with the first name Ozzie at shortstop.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Cards take the rubber match from these pesky Pirates in dramatic fashion! Martinez pitched a fantastic game through 6.2 innings, then got stung by the heart of Pittsburgh’s order and lost the lead. The Redbirds backside of the pen was taxed and needing rest so he was forced to go probably one more out than would normally be asked. After surrendering the lead putting the Bucs up 4-3 Gant would come in and get the final out of the 6th and pitch very well through the 7th and 8th. Although the Pirates would get 1 more in the 8th providing what felt like plenty enough of a cushion for Vazquez to close out in the 9th. But this team had gotten to him before in this season and in general, has quite the flare for 9th inning celebrations. After Hornsby and Brock both manage to get on, 1st and 2nd, Goldy got under one sending it high for what appeared to at least be enough to move Hornsby to 3rd and be in position to hopefully tie the game on the next at bat. But the wind was significantly blowing out to right center today, and coupled with the obvious backspin from getting so far under the ball, it carried JUST BARELY far enough to literally bounce off the top of the wall! Game over! What a finish! Carp continues to show he’s finding that swing again as well hitting another HR early and receiving player of the game honors! Vizcaino also provided a shutdown 9th to get the win, which was also a much appreciated step for him in terms of finding his role! Off to Cincy for the first of 4!

I’ll tell you what, constantly having to pitch to these legendary and absolute top notch hitters in this league gets extremely stressful lol! There are no true “easy” outs and every pitch feels like the game depends on it! Lots of long at bats and almost every mistake gets punished! Fun stuff though haha!
