    MountUrCastle's San Francisco Giants Rebuild

    August 19
the one where we lose a lot

The Giants have completely blown up. With the trades that were made, a less-than-good record was expected, but the offense should have been productive enough to create a few wins here and there. Instead, the Giants finished August now 67-69 after going 10-17 down the stretch with the offense being close to anemic- they only scored more than 4 runs 3 times in the month, with all of them thankfully being W's.

New Giant Ben Zobrist is raking in the Bay with a .313 batting average overall and has been absolutely on fire since he joined the team. Longoria has continued his hot year and is still hitting above .300, and Posey is hitting a respectable .296- this is contrasted by practically everyone hitting below .250.

New Giants Kevin Kramer and Yu Darvish have also been respectable in their own right, with Kramer being a respectable defensive 2B while Darvish has been solid throughout his playtime.

With this, the tank is on. The Giants do not hope to lose as often as possible, but many losses favor them in their goal to build an elite prospect pool.

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

Early July and the All Star Break have arrived. After catching fire over the last few weeks, the Yankees now sit at 64-26 and have opened up an already wide gap in the East even more. The second place Rays now sit 16 games behind with Boston trailing by 20.5. First we lost 2 of 3 to Tampa before taking 3 of 4 at home from Houston, won 2 out of 3 from the Jays, swept Boston in Fenway in a 2 game set, swept the Mets in another 2 game series, and then a devastating 4 game sweep of the Rays at the Trop.

Judge and Stanton both participated in the HR Derby with Stanton taking down Judge in the final round by a single HR. As if anyone else had a chance with these 2 in it anyway. Keuchel, Chapman, Sanchez, Stanton, and Judge represented the Yankees in the All Star Game. The NL would triumph over the AL 8-5 thanks to an extra innings meltdown from Chapman. Judge showed why he’s on pace to win MVP contributing an RBI and then a 2 run HR before being replaced.

      MLB Division Leaders:
      Yankees
      61-27 Indians
      58-34 Angels
      AL WC: 52-40 A’s and 49-43 Rays
54-37 Mets tied with 54-37 Phillies
      54-36 Cubs
      58-33 Rockies
NL WC Phillies and 53-37 Nationals.

With the ASB behind us you can now expect the trade market to truly heat up. Several deals have already been made with Arizona sending SP Zach Godley to LAA for CF Brian Goodwin. Boston acquired OF Eric Thames for SP Steven Wright
The Rays sent 3B Christian Arroyo for Diamondbacks SP Luke Weaver.

The biggest trade to this point:
Giants trade SS Brandon Crawford to Blue Jays for 2B Devon Travis.
For Toronto, they gain an elite defensive SS who can also hit a bit. Not having a very good season. With Toronto already far out of it this seems like a move geared toward returning to contention next year. Bo Bichette isn’t yet in the majors but can always be moved to 2B. With the elite defense Crawford provides, it’s not really a bad choice.

For the Giants, they move Crawford’s large 12.5M salary for 2 more seasons after this off the books. With Travis having a poor season, this seems like their main motivation behind the deal. It does represent a significant downgrade for the Giants MLB club.

Coming out of the ASB, the Yankees will face the Blue Jays at home for 2, then Tampa at home for 3, and Colorado for 3 to complete the home stand. The Yankees will roll out a new rotation order: Keuchel, Paxton, Severino, Tanaka, and Happ.

      News From Around The League:

      Judge Coming For Bonds Record?!
We need to talk about Aaron Judge. He has been hitting HR’s at an insane rate this season. We are only at the ASB and he is already up to 44 HR! It’s almost expected for him to hit a HR every time he steps up to the plate at this point.
In 2001, Bonds only had 39 by the ASB. Let that sink in. Judge still has a ways to go though needing 72 to take the record. In the eyes of some, he only needs 62, with Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa all being PED users not accomplishing their numbers naturally. Let’s see if he can do it.

Meltdown In Boston: The defending Champs find themselves in a very disappointing season, sitting at 44-47, 4.5 out of the WC. Something interesting to watch: if they miss the postseason, does Cora survive the season? Months ago firing Cora would’ve seemed unthinkable and ridiculous. In a city like Boston, winning is expected and demanded. If this season ends up a flop and they fail horribly to meet the high expectations they entered the season with, how far does that magical dominate 2018 get him?

      MadBum Available After All?
Last month, the Giants were right in the thick of things in the West and WC. Now, they sit 8.5 back in the West and 4.0 out of the WC. Moving Crawford doesn’t exactly scream playoff push. A team in their position can’t afford to subtract from the roster if they want to make it in. With their #2 Dereck Rodriguez out for the remainder of July they seem in prime position to slide back further in both races. They no longer look like a playoff team.

They can still sell off and be fine even after parting with prospects for Aaron Hicks, he’s a long term answer to their ongoing OF problem. Taking a significant downgrade by moving Crawford may signal just that. Reports say the New York Yankees may approach the Giants about a Bumgarner deal very soon. The Miller deal was expected to be their last, but with MadBum potentially hitting the trade market, things have changed.

Good Luck! Believe me wild comebacks can happen. In my White Sox franchise in the 2019 season on MLB 18 yet I was 10.5 games out of Wild Card going into September and somehow got the 2nd wild card spot and advanced to the World Series, didn't win it though... Anything is possible keep playing hard.

Cardinals front office issues apology to the fans

John Mozeliak and Bill DeWitt issued an apology to the Cardinals fanbase yesterday.

"To our devoted, loyal, and passionate fans -

We wanted to take a moment to apologize to you for the position the club is currently in. While we all know that being contenders and reaching postseason play each and every year is a lofty goal, it is one that this organization has achieved each of the past 6 years, and while we can still make it a 7th straight this year, the opportunity continues to slowly pass us by.

WE wanted to make it clear that the position this club is in currently is not by the doings of the players or the managerial staff, but by us in the front office. We have continually changed the team makeup and team chemistry this year and have made moves that shook up the clubhouse and let rumors circulate that kept everyone on edge. Please know that we had the best of intentions during each of these moves, but also look back and admit that we had far too many "knee jerk" reactions to things that were happening and to moves we talked about. Instead of ensuring we were doing what was absolutely best for the club in the long run, we hastily made these moves thinking we were bettering the club, when it turns out we were upsetting it. The players who were moved and those brought in have done nothing but try their best each and every day and the managerial staff has done a great job of handling the adversity we created. We wish now we would've been more patient in our roster making decisions, but unfortunately that doesn't change anything.

Moving forward we will for one cheer on this current club as they strive to reach the reach the postseason for the 7th straight season. Once this season has concluded, whenever that may be, we will look to only fill absolute needs and get back to what we do best and that is keep a winning roster/club together as best we can.

We thank you for your devotion, passion, and loyalty to the St.Louis Cardinals. We urge you to get to the ballpark these last 7 weeks to cheer on this club and push them to another postseason appearance. And we ask you to understand that the 25 men on the field and the managers/coaches in the dugout aren't the reason why we are in the position we are in, but rather us here in the front office.

              Go Cards!

              Sincerely,

              John Mozeliak and Bill DeWitt"

With 7 weeks to go in the season the Cardinals best hope at reaching that 7th straight playoff appearance appears to be through the wildcard where they currently trail the Cubs by 5 games for the 2nd spot and the Reds by 7 games for the top spot.

Let's see how the stretch run goes.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

MLB the Show 19 - Baltimore Orioles Franchise

                July 31, 2019

                Team Record: 45-63 (4th)

We’ve completed another trade, shipping Mark Trumbo to Houston for a trio of prospects. Trumbo should become the full-time DH for the Stros, who are 4 games up on the A’s for the division. We get back the following:

SS Jonathan Arauz: A glove-first middle infielder, Arauz’ bat needs a ton of work but his glove could get him to the majors as a reserve infielder. He’s only 20 so we can afford to be patient with him in single-A.

RHP Cristian Javier: Javier was the gem of the deal for us, and I think the Stros overpaid to be quite honest. Javier was on a set-up man development track in a deep Astros system, but he has enough stamina to move to the rotation next season where he has the ceiling of a mid-rotation starter.

RHP Ryan Hartman: A mid-tier SP prospect who adds to our pitching depth but won’t register on our top prospect radar. We’re now excessively deep with starting pitching prospects - which gives me plenty of options for offseason trades as I want to start to bulk up the MLB roster in 2020.

The Dodgers continue to jettison top prospects as they chase the Rockies in the NL West. They traded stud shortstop Gavin Lux to Atlanta for Kevin Gausman. Seems to be some pressure in LA to sh*t or get off the pot.

The Giants are 1.5 out of the wildcard and are determined to make one last run before Bumgarner hits free agency. They trade 3 prospects to the White Sox for closer Alex Colome. SF now has a powerhouse bullpen as they hunt the second wild card which is currently held by the Reds.

Its deadline day so a few more deals will shake out. I’d still like to trade Logan Morrison and Jason Vargas. The Angels were interested in Morrison but have fallen too far out of the race to make that realistic. We’ll see what happens.

Breaking from the immersive updates for just a sec.

It starting to seem like my nice little run here lately is beginning to fizzle. Just lost 2 of 3 to Milwaukee at home, and a couple of late game meltdowns by Memphis in the PCL Championship has them in a do or die spot now! (I will still probably update game 4 later because it was exciting)! I’m still only 6 games out of the Wildcard but Philadelphia has leap frogged me and is 5 in front of me as well and the calendar is quickly growing shorter! I’ve actually had a very good year overall! We currently sit 10 games over .500 and could possibly finish with 90 wins and still miss the playoffs. This league has definitely been an absolute blast for me to immerse myself into, but presents a very different kind of challenge that will require very different kinds of strategies. Obviously there’s an elite group of teams that had a clear advantage in year 1 because of their history (The Cardinals were one of them). But the majority of legends are functioning on one year deals, and obviously are mostly seeking that big 30 millish payday. So teams like the Giants and Dodgers for instance face a very daunting task of having to sign a massive chunk of their team. We’ll see how that plays out. I personally already locked up most of my major pieces like Gibby, Eno, Hornsby, Stan, Yadi, Ozzie and Pujols. The only legend I haven’t committed to that’s up for free agency is Brock, but he’s the 35 year old version who already showed signs of struggling some this season to steal efficiently. Plus Bader is obviously ready to go ASAP if needed. I do have eyes on a couple ex Cardinals legends that aren’t looking for that top payday and would fill potential needs. Like Lee Smith or Dennis Eckersley to shore up my pen. Smith i believe is 25 still looking for around 7 mil a year and a more prominent role than the Cubs can offer. Eck is early 30s in his twilight. Also looking at trying for Torre to play 3rd but he’s closer to wanting that top number I believe. Regardless I’m already enjoying thinking about my game plan moving forward!

Also, the eternal baseball fan in me is weirdly excited about just spectating this years playoffs as cpu vs cpu games. I can’t wait to see how it all plays out. I know, weird right? That sounds like an absolute blast to me haha!! Anyway just thought I’d fill you all in from my own “personal “ perspective. I absolutely love the game this year and hope others are finding that same gratification! [emoji16]

Just trying to give myself motivation to finish the season, lol.

Thanks for the encouragement guys! lol. It's been a wild season, I struggled mightily at the beginning of the season and then sparked a nice comeback to above .500 with an 8 game win streak. August was an absolute killer. I just couldn't catch any breaks and had an 8 game losing streak that derailed my season really.

I'm about to fire it up again, winning last night 7-5. I'm still 10 games out with 23 to play.

My losing streak has reached seven games now, and I've lost eight of my last nine. I've never EVER had anything like this happen. I had a six game losing streak earlier this year. After taking a 3 game lead in the NL central finally I've given it away. It's just not even fun, all this game does is frustrate me at this point. Not sure how much longer I can even attempt to enjoy playing it before I just start back up Red Dead Redemption 2.

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

Mid-June and I’ve decided to pull the trigger on a couple of moves to crate space for some of the young players.

Firstly, traded Clayton Richard to the White Sox for Nicky Delmonico and sent Clay Buchholtz to New York for Domingo Acevedo. I clear out two roster spots and brought up Thomas Pantone and Sean Reid-Foley to replace them.

Next, I dealt Justin Smoak to the Angels for Matt Thiass and RP Jake Jewell. Delmonico will take Smaoks spot as the teams 1B.

Since the deal, I have lost Trent Thornton for a week or so with a sore shoulder.

That leaves me with a lineup and rotation that looks like this:

                        LINEUP:
                        3B Drury
                        RF Happ
                        CF Grichuk
                        DH Tellez
                        LF Hernandez
                        2B Biggio
                        1B Delmonico
                        SS Galvis
                        C Jansen
Bench: Gattis, Gurriel Jr, Travis and Brito.

                        ROTATION:
                        Stroman
                        Pannone
                        Shoemaker
                        Reid-Foley
                        Quantril

                        Giles
                        Mayza
                        Phelps
                        Law
                        Cordero
                        Biagini
                        Gaviglio

                        - I will likely call up Naylor at some point soon. 1B will be manned by a combo of Delmonico, Gurriel and Biggio.
                        - if another injury to the rotation should occur, Waguespack, Sopko or Nix would be first in line for a shot.

I'm with you to an extent. It's frustrating, but I'm far enough into the season that I'm just looking forward to next year. Never want the game to be too easy though.

                          7 straight L's is tough.

FINALLY won. Lester was perfect through seven and the Cubs win, 8-1 to snap a seven game skid. I'm 2-8 in my last 10.

Dodgers take the late August series with the D-Backs 2 games to 1 by scores of: 10-3, 3-9, and 5-1. Buehler and Urias both picked up wins.

Backup 2B Brandon Lowe returned from the IL, leading to SS Gregory Ozuna being sent back to AAA OKC. Ozuna was batting .167 in 14 games with 1 HR and 2 RBI’s. The first year player needs more development before getting another shot at the show.

Dodgers will stay on the road with a 3 game series against 2nd Place Colorado. LA holds a 10 game lead over the Rockies in the West. Projected matchups:
                              Game 1: C. Kershaw (2.78, 16-4) vs A. Heaney (2.79, 16-3)
                              Game 2: C. Stern (2.26, 11-7) vs T. Anderson (6.05, 6-7)
                              Game 3: W. Buehler (2.67, 14-5) vs G. Marquez (4.82, 9-9)

I totally relate bro! It sucks so bad to grind through an entire season to ultimately wind up not even making the postseason. This is my third version playing now and always run franchise teams, more than a couple last 2 years, but have yet to make the playoffs. And I’m not one to break rules just to make it happen. If/when I do get there I want to know I earned it and deserve it. Not fun for me otherwise. This year even though I’m still I guess kinda mathematically “in it”, I’m equally excited about the offseason so it stings a little less for me. Hopefully it turns around for you
