2023 White Sox Franchise - Game 1 ALDS

Game 1 with a pitching matchup of Omar Salgado on the mound for the ChiSox and Todd Lund for the BoSox.

White Sox would take a quick lead in the bottom half of the 1st inning on a Luis Urias RBI single. 1-0 CWS

Sam Travis would tie it up at 1 for Boston on a solo homer in the top half of the 3rd. 1-1

Eloy Jimenez would restore the 1 run Chicago lead with a solo homer of his own in the bottom half of the 4th. 2-1 CWS

Pitching for both teams would shut the door from there Chicago takes Game 1 by the score of 2-1.

Chicago will try to take 2-0 lead tomorrow night with Michael Kopech on the mound vs the guy they traded to Boston to acquire him in Chris Sale.

In the search for some advice. I guess this isn't a "is this a good trade" but more of a "should I do this trade" post. Will try to give as much background info as possible to make this scenario as clear as I can for you guys...

I'm at the ASB of year 2022 and have been in contention for the playoffs every year since 2016 (when I started this chise). Trade I'm thinking of making at the deadline:

3B Rafael Devers (.282/.338/.518, 15 HR, 46 RBI - another year of control left 84 OVR)
SP Travis West (AA, 19 years old, B potential, 2026+ ETA)
                          3B Jeremy Hughes (A, 21 years old, C potential, 2026+ ETA)

                          for

                          SP Jose Berrios (8-7, 3.07 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 146 K, 43 BB, 123 IP - last year of contract 92 OVR)

                          General thoughts:

Devers is my starting 3B and has been for the last 4 years. Usually bats in the 5 hole and has been a great player for me. I also have Eduardo Nunez (.272/.322/348, 2 HR, 38 RBI) who would slide into the starting role for this year and next - a definite downgrade. My rotation is solid but I'd say my 4/5 guys are serviceable at best, adding Berrios would give me 4 very good options in the post season.

On the other hand, I'm also second to last in the MLB in HRs, and letting Devers go would deplete my lineup of power even more than it already is (I've also got 2x MVP Conforto on the IL until September).

In addition, I've made a move at the deadline for the past 6 seasons to improve my team. I feel like I'm depleting my farm system to some degree, but it's also netted me 3 WS in the last 6 years so it's paid dividends. Am I too concerned about my farm system when making moves has proven to lead me to championships?

This year also feels different because it's the first time I will be giving up a starter, so the big league team suffers in an area (an already weak area) while improving in another. It's also the biggest 'splash' of a move I would've made at the deadline. Typically I'm trading for a bullpen arm or positional depth.

Sorry for the rambling, 'stream of conciousness' post, but I've been back and forth on this for the last few days and was looking for opinions one way or the other.

                          Thanks in advance.

Do you foresee not having a good farm system as a becoming an issue sooner than later. If you don't make the trade it could end up being a short term pain long term gain thing. Will the new pitcher make enough of a difference to warrant losing the only real power at the plate plus good young talent. If you can find equally or better talented replacements in the off season or via trade I'd pull the trigger.

He may be the most dangerous hitter in the postseason
