Cardinals take 2 of 3 against Giants

The Cardinals (64-38) take series against the Giants in Busch Stadium to inch closer to the best record in the National League.

The Cardinals won the first two games of the series behind strong pitching from Junior Fernandez and Kyle Funkhouser, but lost the series finale as they were forced to start Carlos Martinez on short rest due to Michael Wacha injuring his lat muscle during warmups.

Game 1 the Cardinals won 3-2 in 11 innings. Junior Fernandez was phenomenal going 6 2/3 innings allowing one run on 5 hits and striking out 5. Jordan Hicks would earn his 3rd win on the season pitching a perfect 11th inning striking out the side. Anthony Rendon would then deliver his 2nd double of the game, this time driving in Tommy Edman who pinch ran for Brendan McKay to walkoff the Giants.

Game 2 saw the Cardinals ace Kyle Funkhouser take the ball and he was solid as usual earning his league leading 13th win of the season going 6 innings allowing one run on 4 hits and striking out 7. Zack Burdi would earn his 4th save of the season though he made the 9th inning interesting giving up a leadoff homerun in the inning followed by a walk, but would proceed to strikeout 2 of the final 3 batters. Devon Snow would deliver a 3 run homerun in the 4th and Abraham Almonte would deliver a sac fly in the 6th to provide the scoring for the Cardinals.

Game 3 the Cardinals were forced to scramble with a tired pitching staff as Michael Wacha injured his lat muscle during warmups prompting manager Mike Matheny to turn to Carlos Martinez on short rest. Martinez did his best going 4 2/3 innings giving up 4 runs on 5 hits. He walked 4 and struck out 6. The bullpen despite being tired pitched well, but Corey Littrell would take the loss giving up a run in the 8th. Chris Taylor would bomb a 2 run homerun while Anthony Rendon and Andrew Knizner delivered RBI's, but the offense wasn't enough for the Cardinals to overcome the Giants for the sweep.

The Cardinals will now travel to Pittsburgh for 3 games before heading out west to face the Giants to close out the month of July.

Cardinals place Michael Wacha on 15 Day IL

The Cardinals have placed starting pitcher Micheal Wacha on the 15 day IL due to a lat muscle strain. The 33 year old right hander suffered the injury during warmups in the series finale against the Giants.

Recently acquired Brady Singer has been recalled from Double A Springfield to make a spot start for the Cardinals. The 27 year old right hander will make his major league debut on Friday against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Cardinals designate Abraham Almonte for assignment

The Cardinals have designated 35 year old Abraham Almonte for assignment following the series against the Giants. Almonte and Mike Matheny haven't been on the same page as Almonte was assigned the 5th outfielder role behind Dylan Carlson. The Cardinals will now have 10 days to either trade Almonte, assign him to the minors, or outright release him. It's likely the Cardinals will look for a trade partner but if one cannot be found, they will outright release him.

The Cardinals recalled 23 year old propsect Eddie Ortiz from Memphis to fill the open roster spot. Ortiz has spent time in St.Louis hitting .268 with a homerun and 3 RBI's.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

A Trip Around the League: MightyMaxxx13’s COVID-free MLB 2020 Season Simulation

        March 31, 2020

        Red Sox 4, Orioles 2
Eduardo Rodriguez shut the O’s down for 8 innings and the Sox won with some good old fashioned small ball (10 singles). Rafael Devers had 3 of them and even stole a base.

        Rays 2, Yankees 1
Ji-Man Choi hit a 10th inning walk-off double off of Aroldis Chapman to push the undefeated Rays to 5-0. Brendan McKay and Jonathan Loaisiga both pitched well.

        Blue Jays 9, Reds 6
Jays scored 6 in the 8th off of Lucas Sims and Cody Reed to earn the win. Teoscar Hernandez was the biggest contributor, with 3 hits, a homer, and 4 RBI. Nick Castellanos was 3-5 with a homer and 3 RBI for the Reds.

        White Sox 5, Indians 3
Chisox have stormed out of the gate to 5-0. Michael Kopech returned to the mound in this one and was effectively wild, walking 6 but allowing just a run in 6 innings and getting the W.

        Astros 6, Athletics 4
George Springer and Aledmys Diaz homered, and Greinke blanked the A’s through 7.1 before allowing 4 runs in the 8th and nearly inciting a comeback. Osuna pitched a perfect 9th for his 3rd save.

        Twins 7, Mariners 4
The limping Mariners fall to 0-6. Miguel Sano missed the first 5 games with some minor inflammation but returned in this one to go deep twice. Sergio Romo got the win in relief and Taylor Rogers has 4 saves already.

        Angels 7, Rangers 3
Halos deal the Rangers their first loss behind Anthony Rendon’s 3rd inning grand slam. Jaime Barria allowed just a run over 7 IP for the win.

        Nationals 7, Marlins 1
This game was a mess for the Marlins. 2 Isan Diaz errors lead to 6 early unearned runs against Caleb Smith. Erick Fedde kept the fish in the hole with 7 innings of 1-run ball.

        Phillies 6, Mets 2
Roman Quinn hit a grand slam in the top of the 10th off Paul Sewald to give the Phillies their 5th straight win. Aaron Nola pitched well, allowing just 2 unearned runs over 7, but didn’t factor in the decision.

        Pirates 6, Cubs 4
Rookie J.T. Brubaker got the win in his first major league start despite allowing 10 hits and 5 walks in 5.2 IP and striking out just 1. 4 Pirate relievers finished the job as the Buccos have their first win of the season.

        Cardinals 5, Brewers 0
Another first-timer here - Korean free agent import Kwang-Hyun Kim blanked the Brewers over 6.1 for the W. Ironically the Brewers starter was Josh Lindblom, who made his return to the majors after spending the past 3 seasons competing against Kim in the Korean KBO.

        Giants 5, Diamondbacks 3
Madison Bumgarner faced his former team for the first time and whiffed 8 over 6.2 before the bullpen coughed up the lead. Austin Slater homered for the Giants and Starling Marte homered for the snakes.

        Rockies 5, Dodgers 3
Another extra inning affair, as the Rox scored in the top of the 10th to move to 3-3. Jake McGee picked up the win in relief, and Charlie Blackmon exited in the first inning with bruised ribs and will sit out a few days.

        Padres 11, Braves 4
Freddie Freeman hit a grand slam off Chris Paddack but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Friars put a hurting on Mike Foltynewicz (and the relievers who followed him). Manny Machado homered and drove in 3 and Wil Myers picked up 4 hits and scored 2 runs.

        LEAGUE TRANSACTIONS

            Maeda, Twins Back on Track
Righty K’s twelve over seven innings

            May 1, 2020
Anaheim--- Kenta Maeda retired the first 18 men he faced, struck out twelve over seven shutout innings, and Twins’ hitters mashed four homeruns as Minnesota defeated the Los Angeles Angels 5-0 on Friday night.

Maeda gave up a lead-off single to Andrelton Simmons in the seventh but then struckout the next three batters, as he improved to 5-2 on the season. He did not issue a walk in the game.

The Twins got solo homers from Jorge Polanco (8th), Josh Donaldson (13th) and Miguel Sano (3rd), and a two-run shot from Eddie Rosario (7th) to account for all of Minnesota’s runs.

Reliever Tyler Clippard left the game with elbow pain the eighth after just four pitches. He is scheduled for an MRI on Saturday morning.

The Twins and Angles will play game two tomorrow night. Jake Odorizzi (1-2, 3.57) get the ball for Minnesota, while Los Angeles will counter with lefty Andrew Heaney (2-2, 3.75). First pitch is scheduled for 6:07 PM.

I cannot beat the Orioles, I just can’t. I’m 1-5 against them. They don’t just beat me, they light me up. I’m out of ideas on a strategy to beat them at this point.

                METS FRANCHISE:

                Mets v Nationals

                Scherzer vs Noah S

                Was down 2-0 early after 2 HR's in the 1st and 3rd.
Noah pitches decent, 6 innings 2 runs

In the 7th with 1 out, we finally get to Scherzer and get back to back HR's from our 2 back ups, Rene Rivera and Matt Adams at the bottom of lineup. Wow!

Puig (signed in FA) hits a 2 run HR in the 8th, 4-2 mets

We get in a jam in the 8th with bases loaded and 1 out, but manage to get out of it.

In the 9th we get into ANOTHER major jam as runners are on 1st and 2nd with no outs. WE end up closing it out and winning 4-2. WOW.

Also, when am I able to start re-signing my players during the regular season?

So far it says "36 days left till All Star Week" and lets me sign draft picks but not able to sign regular players.

                    Recent transactions:

Was having issues with our rotation after Jacob and Noah so swung some deals. After acquiring Jordan Balazovic in FA, traded him and Stroman plus RP Corey Taylor for Rangers pitchers Corey Kluber and Lance Lynn.

Also traded for Andrew Heaney for Steven Matz and RP pieces.

                    Great rotation now.

Game 3 of 4 vs Nationals:

                      Strasburg vs Jacob

In first inning Alonso hits his 4th HR against the Nationals in 5 series. He had 8 HR's last month and is currently at 28 HR's. 2nd best in NL behind Yelich. 2-0 Mets.

Unfort we give up back to back HR's in the 1st as well. Ugh. Constant HR's from our top 2 pitchers is a weakness. 2-2.

Managed to get a blooper hit in the 3rd to bring it back to 3-2 before McNeil grounded into DP.

Till the 7th it was a pitchers duel. We went after their reliever and scored a run 4-2.

                      ---
In the 8th and a new reliever, Puig hit a double to get runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. They load the bases with one out and we get a sacrifice to be up 5-2. Miguel Andujar (traded for for JD Davis and package) in the 9th hit a double to put us up 6-2. Eduardo Nunez hits a double with bases loaded for an 8-2 score. 3 hits for Eduardo!

Final Score 8-2!! Up 3-0 in the series against the Nationals.

A major strength was tiring their relievers in the 1st game.

---After a week ago being up only 5 to the Braves, we are now 8.5 and in fantastic position.

Most surprising find so far in the season has been our Home-Away records.

                      Home Record: 18-16
                      Away Record: 27-3

                          April 1, 2020

                          Orioles 7, Red Sox 2
O’s jumped all over Nate Eovaldi in the first inning with 6 runs, highlighted by a Chris Davis grand slam. It’s early, but Davis is batting .357 through the team’s first 6 games. Former top prospect and minor league journeyman Dillon Tate earned his first MLB save with 3.2 innings of relief.

                          Rays 2, Yankees 0
Charlie Morton outpitched Gerrit Cole with a monster game - a complete game 2-hitter with 14 K’s. Rays cannot be stopped right now, they have swept the Yankees and are the last remaining undefeated team at 6-0.

                          Reds 5, Blue Jays 3
Shogo Akiyama was 4-5 in this one and Eugenio Suarez powered the offense with a 3-run bomb. Tanner Roark got hit hard early and falls to 0-2. Sonny Gray picked up 7 K’s over 6.1 for the win.

                          Indians 7, White Sox 3
Indians finally hand the White Sox their first loss behind 5 RBI’s from Roberto Perez and some handy bullpen work. James Karinchak earned the win, the first of his career.

                          Royals 11, Tigers 6
Nicky Lopez and Hunter Dozier both went yard and the Royals put up 15 total hits. Jorge Lopez was the winner despite allowing 11 H and 6 ER over 5.2 IP. Tim Hill pitched 2 perfect innings for the save after the Royals scored 3 insurance runs in the 9th.

                          Athletics 6, Astros 2
Robbie Grossman’s 2nd inning 3-run homer off Lance McCullers was the difference maker in this one. Frankie Montas pitched the requisite 5 innings for the win.

                          Twins 11, Mariners 2
Another route of the Mariners, who are the last winless team at 0-7. Miguel Sano homered twice, again, so make that back-to-back multi-homer games for him. Evan White did hit his first career home for Seattle in this one.

                          Rangers 8, Angels 0
Corey Kluber took a shutout into the 9th before letting Chris Martin finish it off. This was career win #100 for him, and he has begun his Rangers tenure with 16.1 scoreless innings and 20 K’s. Joey Gallo homered twice and drove in 4.

                          Marlins 2, Nationals 1
Marlins needed just 2 hits to beat Max Scherzer, who walked in a run and surrendered a sac fly during a hectic 4th inning. Sandy Alcantara was sharp, pitching 6.1 with 6 K’s and just the 1 run allowed. Brandon Kintzler notched his second save.

                          Mets 6, Phillies 0
Jacob deGrom pitched 8 shutout innings, struck out 9, and drove in a run. Mets hand former teammate Zack Wheeler his first Philly loss.

                          Cubs 7, Pirates 0
Kyle Hendricks bounced back from a poor opening day outing to pitch 8 shutout innings and fan 9. Javy Baez and Kris Bryant both homered.

                          Brewers 8, Cardinals 5
This was a pitchers duel through 5 but Brett Anderson and Jack Flaherty would both yield early to pinch hitters. Justin Smoak broke it open in the 6th with a grand slam off Alex Reyes, and Avisail Garcia homered twice. Yelich was 2-3 with a homer as well to run his early season batting average to .545.

                          Diamondbacks 10, Giants 1
Kole Calhoun was 2-5 with a triple, a homer, and 4 RBI’s. Robbie Ray struck out 11 over 7 innings in a route.

                          Rockies 6, Dodgers 4
Rockies scored twice in the top of the 9th to break up a close game, and Scott Oberg slammed the door in the 9th for the save. Daniel Murphy, Nolan Arenado, and Ian Desmond all homered for Colorado. Dodgers have dropped consecutive series to start the year.

                          Braves 6, Padres 2
Freddie Freeman homered twice and drove in 3 runs for Atlanta. Mike Soroka pitched 6.2 for the win and also drove in a run. Zach Davies took the loss as the Padres fall to 3-4.

                          LEAGUE TRANSACTIONS
Phillies have released OF Nick Martini

White Sox have activated OF Eloy Jimenez from the IL. Eloy was sidelined with a ligament sprain during spring training but is seemingly healthy and will make his season debut on Thursday afternoon against the Red Sox in their home opener at Fenway. In a corresponding move, utilityman Andrew Romine was placed on outright waivers.

Game 4 of 4 against the Nationals! Can we sweep?

Also the debut of recent trade acquisition Lance Lynn! (5-5 3.23 ERA) currently on fire.

vs. Patrick Corbin (5-4 2.82 ERA)
                            ---
A hot start with two singles from the first two AB's with Rosario and McNeil. Then walked Alonso on an 11 pitch at bat. After a Puig strikeout, Wilson Ramos drove home 2 on a first pitch single.

Lance Lynn started out striking out the side. Wow his curveball is powerful.

Conforto his a lead-off HR to start the 2nd. His 17th of the season. We made Corbin throw a LOT of pitches resulting in him walking Puig to score a run. 4-0.
Ramos then hit another 2 run RBI before Puig got thrown out at the plate. 6-0.
8 hitters at the plate in that inning.

By the 3rd we got the starter out throwing about 65 pitches. Roenis Elias replaces him.

In the 4th after no hits, we gave up a HR to Soto and 2 back to back doubles. The 2nd nearly going back to back (again). 6-2.

In the top of 6th with two outs, Rosario hits a HR at 380ft. 7-2.

In the 8th Rosario hit a single bringing in another run before Matt Adams got thrown out in between bases (seems to be a common pattern). 8-2.

In the bottom of the 8th, Lynn was taken out after 1 out and runners on 1st and 2nd w 87 pitches.

Arodys Vizcaino (FA) is brought in. After a walk in between, struck out the 2 batters w bases loaded. 8-2.

Mets win 8-2! SWEEP. Great series.

After losing 4 in a row to start this, great to see the Mets back on track. 46-19 and now 9.5 ahead of the 2nd place Braves.

                            Lance Lynn (6-5)
                            Patrick Corbin (5-5)

POTG: Amed Rosario 3-4 2 RBI
