Re: Official MLB 20 the Show Trade Discussion Thread

I'm into June and my pitching woes continue. My last two games I've blown leads and lost because of my bullpen. I'm 38-26 and currently 1.0 game up on Milwaukee in the NL Central but it's really only because of how ridiculous my offense is.

I don't have a ton of prospects and I've done what little I can through free agency to bulk up my pen (I signed Arodys Viscaino and Tim Mayza and have them in the minors). But I'd really like to add some serious help both with an upgraded fourth starter (Quntana is just not cutting it for me) as well as an arm or two in the pen. I always prefer high K/9 guys and as I get closer to the All-Star break I become ever so slightly more desperate to make a deal, even if it means parting with what little prospects I have or even big Major League talent.

How are Padres and Jays doing in your franchise? I’d look at Kirby Yates + Garrett Richards from SD or Giles + Roark from Toronto. I would think all 4 of those guys would be on the block in 2020.

Wanting to start a braves Chise and trade for Xander bogaerts. Kinda weird I know, but how would a Xander for Dansby trade shake out?

Also, any way to acquire kenley jansen from the Dodgers?

        Jurickson Profar?

I'm trying to acquire players from the ABC islands lol

Unless of course you think I can get Darvish AND Bryant, and then I'd be happy to unload some prospects in a heartbeat.
Perhaps I've missed something here, but is there a way to transfer cash in this game in a trade?

Neither of them will be contending as they're not having good years. What do you think it takes to get those? I'd love to get both (Yates and Richards OR Giles and Roark).

Official MLB 20 the Show Trade Discussion Thread

According to the trade simulator Ken Giles to Cubs for Ryan Jensen is, “fair value.”

In my game Jensen is having a good year in Double-A but only had a C potential. He’s 22 years old, and is 6-3, with a 3.29 ERA so far in 2020. Giles is having a horrible year and Toronto is currently 27-40 and in 4th place in the AL East. Giles is 1-3, with a 8.57 ERA. He’s allowed 20 earned runs over 21.0 innings. How were he is an 85 overall rated pitcher and has a 94 K/9 rating which is exactly the kind of arm I need in my pen.

Should I pull the trigger on this? If the game will let me?

Edit: Looks like I’m tied up in my budget unfortunately. Is there a way around this? Do I need to dump salary?

Maybe have the Jays take Chatwood with them?

So I'm playing MTO to get the Affinity points for the Cardinals .. and I wanted to trade for Yordan Alverez and it actually gave me the option and the players the Astros were getting were O'niell Wong and Hudson ... If that's a normal season there's no way in hell the trade gets made but in MTO I guess it doesn't matter haha

In real life, Giles is probably untradeable for the Jays if he has a season like that. I would think Toronto gladly takes Chatwood’s expiring contract back if it means they also get a pitcher who was a first round pick in 2017 in Jensen.

However, 67 games deep also puts you in June right? If I was Toronto I’d hold Giles and pray he turns it around before the deadline. Could make a big difference in his value.

Yes, I’m in the second week of June. I like Jensen, but at the same time I realize I have to give up something to get something.

I have a couple very young B prospects that I’d actually rather trade, since I’m depleted on pitchers in my farm as it is.

Yovanny Cruz, Richard Gallardo, or Luis Verdugo are all young, B prospects. I’d deal any of those before Jansen. I’d prefer Verdugo since he’s a shortstop.

Verdugo B (51 OVR) 19 year old SS
Richard Gallardo B (54 OVR) 18 year old RHP
Yovanny Cruz B (66 OVE) 20 year old RHP

You think one or a combination of these gets Giles given his 2020 performance and that he’s a rental?

Last year the Braves traded for Mark Melancon and Shane Greene at the deadline, in both deals they gave up a controllable major league piece in addition to a top-20 prospect (which in the game probably correlates to a low-B). If you want to discount that because of Giles’ terrible season thats probably fair. If you’re giving them Chatwood I would think the prospect going with him has to be decent though to offset the salary.

Oh, for sure. I always want to consider how the players are performing in my franchise. After all, each of our franchises are each of our own universes. So it’s like apples to oranges comparing one Giles to another. The fact that he has an ERA over 8.00, is on the last year of his contract, and the Jays are out of it already in June should all be factors to consider.

With that being said, I agree they’d have a hard time moving him. So I would think they’d take any young prospect they could get for him who is controllable, that has any decent potential.

                          Here's my trade proposal...

Again, please keep in mind I always (as I think any of us should) greatly consider how my franchise is going and how my players are performing. This is definitely not the only factor, but it is undoubtedly a factor. How each team is performing, where they are in the season, how the players are performing, progressing, etc.

CUBS (42-28, first in NL Central)

                          Receive:

RHP Ken Giles 29-years old, free agent at end of season. 85 Overall rating.
                          Season stats: 1-3, 8.75 ERA, 26 SO, 21.0 IP, 2.00 WHIP -0.1 WAR (+9.6 WAR for career)

RHP Matt Shoemaker 33-years old, free agent at end of season. 71 Overall rating. He's been used both as a starter and a reliever by the Blue Jays in 2020.
                          Season stats: 1-3, 6.29 ERA, 48 SO, 68.2 IP, 1.76 WHIP. 0.0 WAR (10.2 WAR for career)

BLUE JAYS (27-41, 4th in AL East)

                          Receive:

SS Luis Verdugo 19-year old B potential prospect. Currently 51 overall rating.

RHP Tyler Chatwood 30-years old, free agent at end of season. 71 Overall rating.
                          Season stats: 3-2, 4.40 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 45 SO, 71.2 IP 0.9 WAR (7.5 WAR for career)

                          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The big pieces in this trade are Giles and Verdugo. The Blue Jays offload Giles who is having a career worst season for a very young prospect. No teams are going to be giving up big talent for Giles at this point in the season (mid-June) for Giles who is playing horribly. The Jays are getting a possible MLB future shortstop (while giving up very little, in my opinion).

The Cubs are getting a guy that could possibly help them in the pen. Perhaps a change of scenery is just what Giles needs and that's what the Cubs are banking on. He still has very high K/9 potential and high velocity. He won't be the Cubs closer but could be used in a setup role which is exactly what the Cubs are needing.

Chatwood and Shoemaker are used as salary swaps here to make sure the deal goes through. Both are mediocre pitchers.

As always I'm interested in input but I'm ready to make this move today. I'm in a good place right now in my franchise to make this happen as I have a few days off in my season. Let me know what your thoughts are...

I'm not even sure I need to include Shoemaker here. Maybe just don't include him? That free's up some wiggle room for acquiring another pitcher to replace Chatwood. I really have my eye on Garrett Richards.
