Side Conversation (if allowed) - What’s everyone’s plan for their franchise this year?

I am a Mets fan but despite my love of playing with them, I can never do a franchise with my favorite team. Too much crossover from knowledge of how they operate in real life. Plus with Uncle Steve at the wheel, there’s really no limits to what the Mets will do.

I’d like an AL team that wants to compete, has a small marker budget and is not out West. Options are limited to Twins, Tigers and perhaps the Orioles. Contemplating the Brewers as well.

What are your guys plans for in depth franchises?

Re: Armor & Sword’s MLB The Show 22 Classic/Directional/Clean Screen Simulation Slide

        Guy’s,

Something I am going to get off my chest right now.......what I am doing here is not some grand experiment.

When you have played sports games (and particularly baseball games) most of your life and in my case also played baseball up to the college level and coached it for almost 15 years thru the high school level......you have a very good grasp of what you want to see, feel and experience in a video game.

I have been playing The Show since 2009. And for the last 7 years I have become extremely familiar with how this game is tuned and there are certain key things I look for and “feel” which allows me to quickly and effectively begin to do a few combinations of what I call “knob” turns to come up with a working set of sliders for my exact playing style.

I know I preach sample size to all of you......and I preach that because I have 1000’s and 1000’s of games under my belt.....like a ridiculous amount of game's with this series. I have put in the hours sort of speak.

It typically barely changes year to year.

2009 thru 2016 I was working with essentially the same engine and developer approach.

2017 thru 2020 it was the same consistent feel and approach.

2021 was the outlier for me.....the black sheep for lack of a better term. Nothing I did was changing what I felt was fundamentally wrong under the hood with that game.

With 2022 I immediately knew and felt we had our game back. It was very easy for me to dial in a beta set and work off of it after a dozen or so games at default HOF.

And it just comes together very quickly for me.

If there are some folks that can’t wrap their head around how fast I can dial in settings.....then don’t wrap your head around it and move on.

I do this for one reason......and one reason only.

To share my passion of baseball gaming with you guys. Whether the OP works for you or not is not my concern. No offense.....but it’s not for everybody.

My goal.....is to inspire you to try something different....embrace the approach and settings...and if you fall in love with this way of playing The Show (Clean Screen, Classic Pitching, Directional or Timed Hitting, Auto fielding and manual throwing) you have a great working base of sliders to tweak to your skill level.

Most of you who have followed me over the years and especially those that hang out on Twitch for the live streams know I am not a stat’s guru, nor a scientific slider guy.

        I am the polar opposite.

I am a former player/coach who goes on feel and hones in on “does it feel real” “Does it play true to the game IRL”.

That is it. I don’t analyze the statistics to the 3rd degree....I let it play out and see how we end up after 162 games. And from my 1000’s and 1000’s of hours of playing this game.....I can confidently say this.

It all works out in the end. Why?

Because I am having so much damn fun I don’t care.

So enjoy MLB 22....I know I am. And I hope you all find your slider Nirvana......I know I already have a working set here that will kick *** for me over 162....will it be tweaked?. It might.....or it might not. But it is nothing that drastic off default. It does not have to be. That is how good the game is at default. It just needed as usual a few “knob turns” to get the “porridge” just right.

About to stream some more Yankees Year 1 soon and the news wire on the OP (post #2) goes live tomorrow with game stories and news features for our brand new Yankees franchise on MLB 22!

Ha.....everytime I try a different team I cannot get “invested”. But I get your ADD about your favorite team.

I think the Twins and Tigers are very interesting teams......but if I ever did a franchise other than my Yankees it would be the Royals. Love their history, love their park and they have a decent farm system and some talent.

You’re a Yankees fan so you’re used to doing realistic feeling franchises with a lot of money This is all new, for instance.. never in a million years would I sign Max Scherzer to the Mets in any video game, ever! Yet here are.

Royals yes. Unfortunately the World Series a few years back still stings me so, I cannot play with them. Maybe.. Greinke is back so that’s a pretty great thing.

Tigers are a great call. Excellent park, Miggy’s chase to 3000 hits and Torkelson, Mize, Manning, Skubal among others really good prospects.

Thank you for sharing your passion and your sliders with all of us. It's all about feel for me as well. I'm having a blast relearning the game, last played in 2020, and using your sliders as a very good base.

I'm just trying to figure out if I want the power to be 6 or 5 for me, the human. I already dropped power down to 5 for the computer, which worked better for my skill level, and my use of the pitch meter. But power 5 for me, the batter, did not feel right, I had too many hits that I hit dead on, but did not do much, it felt weak, while 6 feels much better. I had good contact against a tired 78 rated pitcher, but still could not do much against two different relievers, both in the 80s. If I start to hit way too many home runs with my Cubbies, I will tweak it back to 5.

One big change that worked for me was switching the batter view from show 15 to strike zone 2. That greatly reduced my strikeouts and feels right.

I hope my thoughts help others, and if anyone has any suggestions or tweaks to armor's awesome sliders that work for you, I would really like to hear them.

                And thanks again Armor!!!!

I’m not trying to be biased but hear me out. Cleveland. They are SO young with 2 superstars in Jose Ramirez and Bieber. Not really ready for a rebuild. Also not ready to compete. Above average farm system and to top it off you get to play the guardians inaugural season.

Oh I’ve def thought about using Cleveland, besides the Mets they were my first baseball memory. David Justice, Kenny Lofton and a young Manny Ramirez, saw them play in Toronto and I was amazed. Perhaps… perhaps. I know a lot of people who are using them this year but it would still be a lot of fun regardless. “The Jake” looks great in game too.

I’m still hoping to hear some comments about how accurate the ratings are for mlb players in the last update

Can I use this set and start my franchise? Do I need to wait for Ridin’s? I’m not one to make edits/changes to ratings as I don’t know enough of the players.

I have no problems using Fangraphs to fix 26-man rosters, lineups etc. I just want fairly accurate ratings.

                      Thanks

Playing with the guardians myself. I’ve always have rooted for Cleveland even though I’m a Boston fan. They’ve got just enough of everything I’m looking for in a team. Front line starter, a solid bullpen and the combination of Ramirez and Reyes. I did make a trade for Bell from Washington because besides the two mentioned there’s almost no power in that lineup.

I will say that this is looking like one of the weakest teams I’ve played with. But I like that. I personally can’t play another season with a all star lineup where I win a 100 plus games a year. Who knows maybe I’ll end up doing that with this team but for now I’m expecting a needed challenge.

I definitely want a challenge, I love team building and using a teams real life budget, tendencies, etc. Of course throw in a little of my own ideas because after all I’m the “GM” or whatever lol.

I’m waiting on a roster from the OS community so I’m kind of trying to get a feel for a few different teams. I love the bad ones like Baltimore and Pittsburgh but I want a realistic shot at making the playoffs and stuff.

Aside from team choice, I’m having a really hard time switching to classic pitching. Just seem to get shelled, despite knowing how to pitch. The sliders are good, I think it’s a personal issue lol.

This is my opinion on ratings, they’re purely subjective, SDS has their system and theory on ratings and then guys like Willard and Cycloniac have theirs…… arguments can be made for or against any particular rosters ratings and edits to players…….. I tend to believe that SDS has reasons behind why they rate certain players a certain way and don’t really agree with changing it a lot because it may affect the way the game plays out for that player…….also Ridin doesn’t change existing players ratings so no need to wait for his set in that regard

Stick with classic pitching of you want realism. It forces you to learn how to pitch on the higher difficulties, especially with not so great pitchers.

Also not ready to compete. Above average farm system and to top it off you get to play the guardians inaugural season.

I love my Guardians! But I usually pick a different team evert year just to mix it up.
