Exactly! Instead of the Yankees just flat out saying no, they made an offer where the end result would be no.

Like it, don't like it, I am glad for a little change. I have grown a little tired of Teflon Joe.

Right, the Yankees would be stunned if he actually accepted that offer.

The media is beating up the Yankees front office pretty good this morning. Clearly, they did not want Joe back. Would it have been better for PR to not offer him a contract at all? Probably not. They let Joe look like the good guy and have his dignity by turning down the offer.

How else should they have handled this?

It appears that the Yankee brain trust wanted the turning down to be done by Torre and not by them. Offer him something with a lot of hoops to jump through for the full salary.

To be honest I do not think he is even worth the 5 million! He was a very lucky manager to be with an organization who could afford high talent. He basically plugged in the names and off the team went. I really question his managing ability when the talent is not stellar. He has shown holes in his decision making process when dealing with bullpen situations, etc.

True. The last couple years the guy has made twice what the second highest manger in the league has. Though, they could have just said that they were moving on.

I am interested in what Joe will do. I don't think he will want to do ESPN. I could see him doing a Parcells, waiting till another good job comes around and then taking it. Maybe the Mets lol.

Plus he was greatly aided by Zimmer and Stottlemyre during the title years, the Yankee bench wasn't the same once the two of those were gone, especially Zimmer.

                  Re: Torre in Tampa

As much as I respect Torre and all he's done for the Yanks 12 years coaching/managing one team is a long time. I'm not saying the players or Torre were complacent or anything but it would be human nature if they were just a little too comfortable, just like it can get for those of us at any job.

At this point he was competeing against the legacy of the first half of his Yankee managerial career and that's a tough task. I don't know when it started but I tire of the "anything short of a WS victory is a failure" attitude that this organization has adopted. What a way to sap the fun out of the baseball season. Maybe a change will lower expectations...

I remember when the NY media was up in arms over letting Buck Showalter go after he led the Yanks to their first playoff appearance in 15 years or whatever. So the Yanks brought in Torre and the media hated the idea. This change is a good thing for the organization. As long as they don't hire Isiah Thomas the Yanks will be fine.

So because Don Mattingly is inferior as a bench coach to Zimmer, let's hire Mattingly as manager!

You can look at all my posts since the end of the ALDS, they all say I do not want Mattingly as our next manager. Unfortunately the Yankee FO will most likely feel differently.

I thought Mattingly himself said he didn't think he was ready to manage? That'd be a tough first job for him.

That was leaked to the NY media but Mattingly's agent came out and "vehemently denied it" and said Mattingly was shocked when he heard the story.

That was a rumor that was brought up by one of the NY papers. Both Mattingly and his agent stated that those rumors were false.

Mattingly really hasn't said anything about wanting to manage the team though, but I think that was in repsect for Torre.

Same with Girardi and I think it's all out of respect to Torre like you said. Both of them are foaming at the mouth for the chance to get this job though, IMO.

wonder if this will turn into a "Yogi" thing... in the press conference, someone asked Joe if he would come back in a ceremonial role for the new stadium opening.. he replied "I'm not prepared to comment on that"...
