    Re: Torre in Tampa

We'll it's been a gr-8 12 years, but I really don't understand what Joe Torre was thinking on this-1. He got a 3 year contract basically on his terms @ 7 mil a year & didn't get it done(Win the World Series)

The Yankees offer him 5 mil base(still making him the HIGHEST PAID MANAGER) in the game. With incentives that could reach 8 mil if he makes the World Series(mine you all he had to do is make the WS) That would've kicked-in that second year for him & he turns it down...

I'm sorry but if you didn't want to deal with the madness anymore you should've gave the Yankees notice, unfortunately this makes Torre look like it's was all about $$$$$

They don't have problems with that.

GM's don't really fire and hire managers with no input. Cashman is still in charge of the roster.

      They are fine.

I'm pretty sure Jaret Wright wasn't a Cashman decision.

Bottom line is, it was his time to go. There is going to be a TON of finger pointing going on for the next while (hell, look at this thread already), but I think this needed to happen for the Yanks. You need to pull in a fresh face at some point.

Everything else is irrelevant in terms of labeling certain folks as "classy", in the right, or morally deficient somehow. For some reason, when it comes to the Yankees, people seem to be obsessed with talking about classiness, purity, righteousness, and all these other pedantic attributes not commonly seen in a baseball team. I'll never quite get that.

Granted, the one year offer likely didn't help much but it's better than basically saying, "Stay home."
I understand it's for PR, but that doesn't make it right.

If Torre turned down the deal because he thought it was disrespectful and he thought they didn't really want him around, than that's much worse to him than just being honest and saying they decided they wanted to go in a different direction.

While i agree that i don't think "dark days" are coming for the Yankees i do think there will be a transition period. The Yankees have spent more than a billion dollars since winning the 2000 World Series and all it's gotten them are 2 World Series losses, 1 ALCS loss and 4 ALDS losses. At some point they may have to re-think their out spend everyone else to be a winner philosophy, which i think Cashman is trying to do. But since Cashman had little to no input into the Torre situation with the new regime in place you have to wonder if Cashman will have much say in the players the Yankees bring or the one's they let go.

I agree, I just hope Mattingly is not the next manager. He was my favorite player as a kid but I do not see him being a successful manager in the Bronx. The conference call said there are some "surprise candidates" on the list, not sure I like that. I'm hoping it's Girardi, there's really no one else out there I'd be comfortable with. Not La Russa, not Mattingly.

He was, period. 12 straight years in the playoffs. Dealt with a lot of BS and still won. It's laughable to see people think he wasn't treated disrespectfully.

It is not physically possible to win the World Series every year. You look back at Torre's regime as a whole and he won the WS once every three years. That is amazing. More than anything the front office should be scrutinized for atrocious pitching transactions.

Yankee fan for life here and I don't feel that way. We'll miss Joe and I think George is an ***.

NY offered him only a 1 year deal because they know no manager wants to be a lame duck. If they were really interested in keeping him it would of been at least a 2 year deal.

For the Yankee fans that are happy about this, be careful what you wish for.

But the way he's been treated in the past week is absolutely sickening. A 1 year deal, what a slap in the face
