Good for Torre. He needs a long overdue break from New York.
Yeah, Torre was treated like a real ******* when he was making $7.5M a year to lose in the first round every year for 3 years. The Yankees are such *******s for actually treating Torre in how he's done recently.. just like he got in first last 3 year contract? I got news for you, contracts are based on recent performances. Joe Torre got $7.5M a year on his previous contract because he was coming off 4 WS titles. And he's coming off years where he has failed to get the team past the first round. Hence this contract.

it's all based on RECENT performance. And the fact that 5-8M is considered a lowball offer is a joke.

I'm just curious why everyone is saying this is the end of negotiations. Did I miss something? Was this reported to be the one and only offer from the Yankee brass?

Couldn't they come back and say, "Okay, 2-years at $5 million." I'd imagine Joe accepts that.

Oh well, I don't have a problem with Torre leaving as long as La Russa isn't our next manager.

Because they lowballed him. It's the same way they got rid of Showalter if I remember correctly. Asking him to take a pay cut is basically the Yanks saying, "We don't want you anymore, but we're going to make this offer so it looks like we tried"

Sorry, but that post is the epitome of a spoiled Yankee fan. World Series ring or bust is a complete BS attitude, whether you're a fan or the front office. I don't care if they have a $200 million payroll or not.

It is not physically possible to win the World Series every year. You look back at Torre's regime as a whole and he won the WS once every three years. That is amazing. More than anything the front office should be scrutinized for atrocious pitching transactions.

Pathetic job by the Yankees trying to give their best manager ever a 1 year contract with a salary cut.

I'm not a spoiled Yankee fan. I understand you aren't going to win every year. But for christs sake, you get contracts based on RECENT PERFORMANCE. And he got less money than he would have gotten offered because he hasn't done as well in the past couple years. Why is that so hard to understand?

It's absolutely comical that the Yankees are considered the bad ones here.

Mets fans shouldn't be talking about anything being pathetic.

                      Re: Torre in Tampa

Took this from another poster but I agree with this word for word

Joe got his last contract based on the record at the time, which was 6 World Series appearances in 9 years. This year he was paid DOUBLE, I repeat DOUBLE the money the SECOND highest manager got. And his last three years are all first round losses in the playoffs. He earned $7 million this year. Yet the Yanks offered him $5 million base with a $1 million bonus for each round the Yanks reach. So to match this year he would need to reach the ALCS. If they REACHED the World Series he gets more. And there is a vestable option for 2009. $5 million (stil $1.5 million more than the second highest paid manager) plus that bonus is an extremely generous offer. I would not offer more. I do thank him for 12 years, but the Yanks gave him a very fair offer and good luck to Joe.

Also, ESPNews has just been streaming the Michael Kay show for like an hour now. I'm used to hearing West Coast sports talk radio, its kinda cool to hear the Brooklyn accents and stuff. Lotta blowhards on both coasts though.

I think the lowball was more the 1 year than the $5 million.

How often do managers sign 1 year deals? He doesn't want to be managing for his job every year.

Time to move on though, I want Girardi I guess. The only other option I guess is Mattingly. Really I'm not that impressed with any of the guys being talked about.

What do the Mets have to do with anything. The Yankees try to portray themselves as a classy organization, but the way they treated Torre is a disgrace. The reason why it took them so long to make a decision about Torre was because they don't have unified management. The Yankees are about to enter some dark, dark days.
