    Re: Torre in Tampa

Anyone else think the coverage of this has been a little over-the-top? Obviously it's a significant sports story and all, but you'd think he died the way ESPN has been eulogizing him. They're re-playing his afternoon news conference right now on ESPN2...

I don't know, maybe it's just me but I guess I'd just sort of like for this type of attention to be spent on the actual games... I heard a rumor that the World Series starts next week.

On Mike and the Mad Dog, I heard all the major stations in NY interrupted their regular broadcasting schedule to play the news conference.

Listening to the ESPN Radio Daily Podcast, on every show, they have someone like Gammons on, they ask them about Torre, then with like 30 seconds left, touch on the ALCS or the Rockies.

Yeah, and my friend was trying to convince me that baseball ISN'T life in the northeast.

          Silly, delusional So-Cal sports fans...

I am a Mets fan and I can't stand the Yankees, but I think Joe is a great guy and have nothing bad to say about him. Torre did a lot of the team and it is a shame that they treated him that way. You can talk about the Yankees being a business all you want, but there still is a place in this world for loyalty and honor. George has very little of either.

            Good luck Joe.

The Yankees are the most popular sports franchise in America and Joe Torre has basically been the face of that franchise with Derek Jeter for the past 12 years.

If I was the Yankees, I would hir Larry Bowa in a heartbeat, Let him light a fire under the Dull Yankee's aress, because thats what they need right now, not some class act player from the past, they need a manager with ball's per say...

Bowa's going to Seattle to be 3rd base coach.

I loved him as a 3rd base coach, and I wouldn't mind him as bench coach. I do not want him managing the team though. He's like that assistant football coach who's a great assistant, but too much of a loose cannon to be a head coach.

Looks like it's down to 3 candidates now: Mattingly, Girardi, and Tony Pena. I really wouldn't have a problem with either of them. Mattingly looks to be the front runner and he's headed to Tampa early next week to meet with the ownership.

                    You mean Tony Quiter

What he did to the Royals was pretty bad. IIRC he basically walked out on them as he wasn't fired.

I think Cashman will reach out to others.

Reaching out to those three first is probably a courtesy to his own coaching staff (and announcer).

If you can believe ESPN Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell and Bobby Valentine are also on the Yankees list, Buck Showalter's name had been mentioned somewhere but i don't remember where i read it. Other names i would not be surprised to hear are former Yankees Chris Chambliss and Mike Stanley.

The Yankees have every reason to exhaust all options but they also need to be careful.

Reaching out to many names can get people to start dreaming of a certain manager and when that person isn't hired the Yankees will catch heat for it.

Safe bet is to keep it internal but fans won't let them.

I heard an interview about Farrell last night. The guy is very hm how should I say this, interesting. He's VERY detailed oriented and has a very different way of coaching pitchers by using psychological methods unheard of in MLB. He's also a great talent evaluator but I think his best role from what i've heard about him is to be a GM not a manager.

                              You might be right.

The Pirates are also said to be interested in Farrell for their manager job which he may be a better fit for rather than the Yankees.

Wow, the Steinbrenner sons are really off to a great start

I think they are trying to make the Yankees look as bad as possible.
