Re: 2008 Chicago Cubs
I think Zambrano and Soto will definitely make the team. I would switch Marmol for Soriano though. I just don't see a setup man making the team. Especially a lesser known guy like Marmol."The academic support at Ohio State, there is no way you can fail. Even if you're giving minimal effort there is no way you can fail."

Re: 2008 Chicago Cubs
I really think it might come down to Sean Gallagher. Presuming 16+ wins from Zambrano, 27+ from Dempster and Lilly....hopefully + a lot...If the Cubs could have a 4th pitcher that could keep them in games on a (reasonably) regular basis, that would be dynamite.
Marquis could be that guy, but his run support seems to be a bit subpar. After his first 3 starts, it dropped off significantly. I don't know what to think about him. It seems like he shouldn't be so bad, but then you think about how tough it is to win when your starter is going to go less than 6, walk 2-4 dudes, likely give up a homer, and around 3 runs.
It is not that our offense can't overcome 3 runs...it is just a good chunk of real estate the team is giving over to the opposition. But Marquis is a fifth starter (however wacky our rotation order has become)...10 wins, 11 losses...I might take it. Likely will, anyways.Australian Rules Football...just sayin'Comment

Re: 2008 Chicago Cubs
He is more than a setup man...he is the go-to guy.
Cliff Hurdle should pick him...or he should be fired.
And FWIW, ARam is #2 behind the buzzsaw that is Chipper Jones in OPS. And has been rather clutch this year, too. Braun has some gawdy numbers, but Ramirez beats him in walks, avr, on-base, and ops.Australian Rules Football...just sayin'Comment

Re: 2008 Chicago Cubs
Yeah, Marmol has saved our bacon so many times. He is by far our best reliever. If theres ever a tight situation, its usually Marmol who we turn to. Wood usually comes in with the bases empty. Marmol does it all.Comment

Re: 2008 Chicago Cubs
great win...tough win.
The Rockies left a TON of men on base....I wonder what the record is...
Soto comes up big with another sac fly...but he is going to die out there if he catches every game...how many has he sat out? 2?Australian Rules Football...just sayin'Comment

Ask any manager in the NL....

I'm not by any means saying that Carlos doesn't deserve it, but deserving it and actually getting selected are two different things. Let's face it, setup men hardly ever get selected to all star games. Now if he was our closer like he should be, he would be a shoe in."The academic support at Ohio State, there is no way you can fail.
