BEFORE tonight's game (all games through May 5th are counted), the Mets' team ERA was 4.33
(14th in MLB). The Phillies' team ERA was 5.50 (27th in MLB).

and.....

Mets pitchers had given up 22 home runs
(tied for 21st with S.F., CWS & Fla).
Phils pitchers had given up 46 home runs (dead LAST in all of MLB).

lastly

The Mets BAA was .251 (10th in MLB). The Phillies BAA was .279 (25th in MLB)


No one, certainly not me, denies the Phils have a big edge so far offensively. It is what it is. But like I said and will keep saying until things change, the Phillies pitching is NOT all that.

Well...I'll just have to reference the Win column as my source of sortable stats. No matter how you sort we still end up on top.

Fine sellout our pitching now...I'm not going to argue w/ you that it's been abysmal...in fact I've agreed. It's more or less you w/ the proverbial head in the sand if you think it's going to stay like this.

Maybe tonight you can get back to .500 and some sort of relevance in the National League, but hey...why does it even matter? Your entire team is a choke fest, and can't even get Johan more than 2.2 runs per game.

Congrats on the W tonight. Of all the reasons I thought we'd lose this game, defense wasn't one of them.

That was a great game tonight. Johan was awesome as usual. I'd agree with Johan as the best in the mlb now with Grienke a close second. Grienke is insane so far.

Normally I'd have to get bent outta shape over the fact that we never seem to score runs when Johan pitches. Chan Ho Park with a 8+ ERA is suddenly unfreakingtouchable. Props to him, though, he pitched a heckuva game. Shoot, Johan almost touched him for a deep shot to right. Shame when the pitcher has to take matters into his own hands to try and get a stinking run.

Man..I know that, you know that, but unfortunately in this modern-day-football-season-mentality, TOO MANY fans, radio talkies, televison talkies, beat writes, etc act as though the MLB schedule is 16 games long...

these folks got to get a grip and realize a long season guarantees one thing: things change day by day, NOT week to week.

LOL I was not surprised. This ALWAYS happens against the Mets. Terrible pitchers throw the game of their lives.

It's typically something we see from Florida or Arizona though.

why? In the final analysis, who really cares how many runs the Mets score when he pitches? As long as the Mets win those games, that's all that matters.

Johan is not the first Met started to be starved for runs.

Seaver, Darling, Gooden all had that issue happen quite frequently in their Met tenures....

it happens...
there are a TON of pitchers in the majors right now, that can say the same thing.

most of us know the reasons: from mere coincidence to players feeling the pressure to help out a run-starved ace...

a win is a win...
worry about run shortages if they make the post season...matter of fact, let's just get there.

dont get me wrong, I know Grienke has been unhittable with an invisible ERA....

my tie breaker between the two: John has done it longer and more recently...

Greinke probably was called up a tad bit early which certainly didn't help his first couple of years in the majors...

It's only frustrating because the rest of the rotation, while Pelf and Maine have been a little better, and Livan pitched a great game last night, you still want to have a good game count. I wouldn't say it if Johan went out gave up 3 or 4 runs, and we couldn't score more. It's more when he has a dominant performance like that and we let it go to waste because we can't hit.

But like I said, NORMALLY I'd get bent out of shape. It is what it is (even though I hate that phrase). Still early in the season, and the bats should wake up soon enough. Right now I'm more concerned with what we'll do moving forward with ollie's (right now he doesn't even deserve the respect of having his name's first letter in uppercase) spot in the rotation. I know Figueroa is supposed to go this week.

Omar Minaya was on SNY about 5 minutes ago. He said Ollie will be put on the DL with patella tendinitis...

Jonathan Niese will be called up and will start on Friday against the Pirates. He's 0.2 with an ERA close to 7.00
