I agree...and once the Braves got that second runner on and they started playing that stupid organ music with the tomahawk chop chanting, I was like 'this seems like 2008 again'

And Johan Santana Was Named

National League Pitcher of The Month...and deservedly so...

He is CLEARLY the BEST starting pitcher, not only in the National League East specifially and The National League in general, but arguably, he's the best starting pitcher in ALL of major league baseball.

National League Pitcher of The Month...and deservedly so...

He is CLEARLY the BEST starting pitcher, not only in the National League East specifially and The National League in general, but arguably, he's the best starting pitcher in ALL of major league baseball.

I sure am...Unfortunately Hamels isn't slated to pitch until Friday so even if tonight's game was rained out, and Santana's start was pushed to Thursday he'd face off w/ Moyer at best.

Anyways...we're back atop the NL East as should, and our pitching is improving now that we've turned the page into May.

We've got some favorable matchups vs Johan:

Stairs = 4/15 w/ a HR
Werth = 5/16 w/ a HR
Ibanez = 12/34 w/ a HR/8 RBI
Howard = 4/16 w/ 2 HRs/5 RBI

But he has completely shutdown J-Roll, Utley, and Victorino.

Well, THAT was closer than it should have been... Of course, if we hadn't left like 490 people on base, it wouldn't have been that close to begin with.

The Phillies have to have some of the worst starting pitching in the majors right now. Myers is a head case, Moyer looks finished, and Park is a joke. There is something clearly wrong with Hamels, as he was overpitched last year and is now dealing with the effects. The Phillies have showed grit to be where they're at right now but they're going to collapse if they don't start pitching better.

The Phillies have to have some of the worst starting pitching in the majors right now. Myers is a head case, Moyer looks finished, and Park is a joke. There is something clearly wrong with Hamels, as he was overpitched last year and is now dealing with the effects. The Phillies have showed grit to be where they're at right now but they're going to collapse if they don't start pitching better.

Trust me...I wanted more starting pitching too, as filling a need for starting pitching in adding Chan Ho Park wasn't really the route I was hoping for coming off a WSC.

All in all NYMs starting pitching hasn't been THAT much better; NYM - 10 quality starts to PHIs 7... You can attribute that to not having our ace for April.

Hamels did log a bunch of innings last year, but in his last two starts he's been coming around. Myers is historically a better pitcher in the 2nd half, but he has been giving up the longball at a higher rate than ever before. Still I like for him to get it together, and make the necessary adjustments to get back in line.

With a cup half-full approach you guys better hope our starting pitching DOES NOT get better.

We're sitting a top the NL East w/ a slumping Rollins, a Ryan Howard that hasn't found his powerstroke just yet, and what you guys would consider a staff in shambles.

This doesn't bode well for your chances of knocking us off as the NL East Div Champs if we maintain our current success, and Rollins, Howard, and the starting pitching return to form.

and you're absolutely right....They talked about it on the baseball network, Kevin Kennedy and the guys on The Home Plate Channel talked about it....the people that don't have their heads in the sand know that. And I'll say it again, this (talking about their less-than-good starting pitching) has nothing to do with 'not giving credit to the team', but it has EVERYTHING to do with the reality of the situation. It IS what it IS. No one's talking about or cares about the end of this month, by All-Star break or even the stretch run. Talking only now...at this juncture.

All one has to do is look up the numbers of starting rotations in the National League/majors...and you'll get the sobering answers.

The Phillies' strong offense has CARRIED THE TEAM, NOT THE PITCHING.

You don't know me, so I'll tell you...I NEVER make excuses...I don't get bent out of shape over baseball, my team or what is or not happening on the field...in the scheme of things, it ain't that serious.

Mets vs. Phillies Team Pitching Rankings

BEFORE tonight's game (all games through May 5th are counted), the Mets' team ERA was 4.33
(14th in MLB). The Phillies' team ERA was 5.50 (27th in MLB).

and.....

Mets pitchers had given up 22 home runs
(tied for 21st with S.F., CWS & Fla).
Phils pitchers had given up 46 home runs (dead LAST in all of MLB).

lastly

The Mets BAA was .251 (10th in MLB). The Phillies BAA was .279 (25th in MLB)


No one, certainly not me, denies the Phils have a big edge so far offensively. It is what it is. But like I said and will keep saying until things change, the Phillies pitching is NOT all that.
