He's hitting for power right now and that's what we needed out of him. Looks to be a great signing and I'm glad it's helped us more than hurt.

I KNEW how he was going to be here....yes..I KNEW it. I think those negative folks here on OS and elsewhere should have learned a lesson about going on hearsay, gossip and the like...

The most important thing that Sheff has insured is that the opposing pitchers are obviousy scared to pitch to this guy....
at certain AB's it's so obvious, it's really funny....

Hmmm....he JUST admitted on the air that he was wrong about the Sheffield signing. He cited that he didn't think Sheff had anything left. He also said he was wrong about Sheff being a nuisance to the team if he rode the bench.

What pompous-*** didn't say, or admit to, was that HE...like ALL of the hosts on the 'FAN, fanned the flames of intolerance for Sheffield before, during and after his arrival. And they ALL trumpted up their personal prejudices against him...which led predictably to upwards of 95% of the callers taking the same stance/position.

That certain segment of callers, spewed their unwarranted venom...piling on because of the demon seeds the hosts had previously planted....

I would love to see him do an interview with Sheff...to see how confortable he would be.

Do you think Murphy should get more of the full time run at 1st to see what he can really do after he settles in a role or should we trade for a 1st baseman and send Murphy down to triple A to get is groove back?

or until Reyes, Beltran and Church come back....

if his AB's are stil abyssmal by them, I'd send him down to AAA and think long and hard if you need to do this....

One thing I've thought about is why not try out Church at first? For the remainder of the time Delgado is out?

Ramon Martinez

any real Mets fans notice that all of those who wanted Ramon Martinez out of town after his poor defensive showing in Los Angeles have disappeared? Wonder why?

Since that series, he has played an almost FLAWLESS defense...

and has contributed a little offensively....which is fine....

I think his performance tonight answered that question.

BTW, I really don't think that was a HR. I think we got away with one there. Even Murphy couldn't believe it.

CHARACTER ASSASINATION

character assasination....I'm sure some of you guys know what it is...right? Well, here in NYC, this sick mentality is back again...in full force

Fernando Martinez in last night's game, popped up to the catcher in one of his AB's. We all know the drill---unless the ball is CLEARLY foul territory, run to first. Martinez did not. Not only that, but he played spectator as the Marlins' catcher drifted backwards towards the first base line and bang--the ball bounced off of his chest. The pitcher recovered and Martinez was thrown out with plenty to spare at first.

He received an exceptionally loud chorus of boos from the crowd. Which he deserved. In his next AB, he was again bood soundly for his gaff in the previous AB.

PRedictably, the tabloids here (Daily News and that rag, the New York Post) were all over it (and him).

The FAN radio hosts were all over it---to the point of ad nauseum and overkill.

The holier-than-thou attitude that some of these pompous asses behind the mike take is downright sickening.

YES he screwed up

YES he deserved to be booed

but can some of these idiots get a grip?
It is HIGHLY presumptuous to even believe that he does that all the time. Please....spare me the B.S. This stupidity about he has to 'learn'...stop it.

They talk of sending his *** back to AAA, pulling him out of the game (a'la Gil Hodges with Cleon Jones in '69), making an example out of him, the Mets don't teach their players to hustle, he should not come back up this season...this is all overkill and the start of character assasination.

He's 20-freakin-years old! All of the new-wave over-zealousness should be wiped out at every twist and turn. Listening to some, and I swear to you, they act as if Martinez did this ina Game 7 of the World Series.

And I am SICK and TIRED of those out there that refer to 'certain' players, not only on the Mets, but in major league baseball in general, as LAZY. However they use other words for others in the game whose actions and behaviors are EXACTLY the same...
Yes, it is what you may think I'm getitng at. I've seen and heard this for DECADES..and I speak out against it EACH and EVERYTIME.
you don't paint only certain folks with that proverbial paintbrush when incorrect deed are done, but spare others who do the same incorrect deeds.

Remember Lastings Milledge? He was a victim of over-zealous piling on...by the time he was traded, Milledge was the worse player the Mets had in recent time. Which of course was all bull****? And that tired-*** phony tirade some went on regarding his producing adult rap music...I say to those...do you ever REALLY listen to the music...particularly the rap music that some of YOUR favoritie players walk-up to? you need to...it would shut you up

Gary Sheffield? They TRIED...all of the guilty....they TRIED, but FAILED...to make you think that he was a serial killer who would change the Mets clubhouse into a scene from Friday The 13th.
