lol yeah what a stellar debut for McDonald. Two drops (even though they were diving catches the ball was in his glove both times) and then the bobble that allowed runners to go from 1st and 2nd to 2nd and 3rd.

How about Encarnacion's baserunning blunder? Or when Dusty decided to call on a pinch hitter for Harang (aka the very first pinch hitter of the season) and he brings up a ****ing pitcher?!? I know Owings is a good hitter for a pitcher but that's still a head-scratcher to me. Why was Gomes ever sent to the minors?

Ugh, first game didn't do much to breed optimism.

I don't think wanted the Lefty Lefty matchup, and only had one right handed bench option(excluding Hanigan) in Janish and he isn't much with the stick. Nix and Dickerson haven't done too much in the past against lefties...

That's my take on what he was thinking there.

I agree. Which is exactly the reason Gomes should have been there.

Well,we got 161 more too go. The weather sucked and they faced 3 excellent pitchers today. All in all it was a close game and we were in it too the end. I'll take that.

Yeah, it was nice to see Harang pitch well today. It was a good game, and it was great to see the reds in it until the end. I do hope that Gomes decided to go to Louisville and not decide to become a FA, and that he gets called up sometime fairly soon.

I hope so as well. I really think the bench could use him. Have a great night! See ya on Wednesday.

I'm guessing the good news from today is that Bronson will pitch Thursday...

McDonald was making some pretty bad fielding mistakes today. I was more suprised that Encarnacion (E 5) was able to barehand that bunt on the 5-3 putout.

                  Wednesday is another day.

Gomes wasnt there because he is a terrible OFer.
They need McDonald on the team to play CF until Taveras is ready to play.
I know he didnt look great in CF but Gomes would still be trying to get to the balls that McDonald almost caught!
They kept McDonald over Gomes for the simple fact that he is a good defensive OFer.

The REDS are CLOSE to solidifying the rotation & pen, barring Arroyo & Cordero stinkin' it up, i just don't think we'll score many runs...not 700 anyway.(2008- 704 runs) we need a big stick in the middle of the lineup fo sho.

"Hey look a ball, maybe I should run and dive for it!"

It got to the point that every time a fly ball was hit I expected McDonald to come running in and dive for it, no matter where it was hit.

I will give him some slack. It was opening day, and the pressure has to be incredible. Hopefully he can find a cure for "dive-at-everything-itis" that he seems to have come down with.

Gomes isn't a CF. He plays LF and his azz should have been standing out there yesterday. We had two Centerfielders that could have played over McDonald. Dickerson and Hairston. Gomes could have played left and Jerry could have played CF. Gomes has much better range in left than the guy we had out there last year. I also think Gomes is a much better PH option than Owings. I also think Norris Hopper is a better player than McDonald. The hell with it. What's done is done. IMO McDonald has no business on this roster.

Dusty was on with C.Trent last night and Dusty thinks Gomes may be back with the team by this weekend. He said it was Walts decision to go with McDonald over Gomes because they needed a right handed hitting CF until Taveras was ready to play.
Also for everyone wanting to know why the Dusty PH Owings C. Trent breaks it down for you. Here is his response to everyone that couldnt understand the move.

                                From C. Trent's blog today.
The dumbest comment I've heard repeatedly is "how bad is the bench if Micah Owings is the first guy off the bench to hit?" -- seriously, first of all, look at the back of his card. Secondly, it's the fifth inning. By using Owings in a 1-0 game, you preserve all your position players for later use if need be. Third, look at the back of his baseball card. I thought it was the perfect place to use Owings, a great move.
