Re: 2009 Cincinnati Reds
Guys, we are going into our 7th game of the season right now. While I agree that we need some fire at the plate, you HAVE to give some guys a chance to get hot. If we traded out a player every 7 games because someone wasn't hot, then we would be no where at the end of the season....much like we might be anyway!

Re: 2009 Cincinnati Reds
Even if both were hitting they both need a break atleast twice a week.
If Gonzo doesnt start hitting Janish is going to take his job, but Gonzo will get every chance to break out of his slump.
You have to remember he hasnt played in almost 2 years, with that being said he just looks lost at the plate.
Also I wouldnt take Dunn for 5 million a year! Where is he going to play LF? I would rather have Dickerson and Hairston playing there. Ask any of the pitchers how glad they are to have Dunn out of LF this year. Also how dont know how many players have talked about how things are different this year with Dunn and Griffey gone. They keep saying the team has a whole new attitude and that EVERYONE is held accountable for their actions this year. You dont hustle you wont play this year! Last year Griff and Dunns lack of hustle rubbed off on Edwin and Brandon. And there was nothing anyone could do about it, how do you tell your younger players to hustle and play the game right when you two high priced veterans dont hustle?
I wish I could find the article about this that was in the Enquirer during spring training. The article was David Weathers talking about the teams new attitude.ND Season Ticket Holder since '72.Comment

That was all tongue in cheek. No need to find that article because I read it. I have a good feeling about this year's team, one I haven't had in a little while. I like how young we are and I love how Dunn and Griffey aren't there.
BTW jake, thanks for bringing up another Dunn debate in that Baker thread. I just can't help myself when it comes to Dunn and someone claiming he is "one damn fine hitter." But my argument won't last long because it is basically a losing argument. The saber guys stand by their statistics and formulas as if their life depended on it and therefore they will never be open to other contributing factors that a player brings to the table (ie-bad attitude, laziness, etc). Not to mention that the Donkey is just not a good hitter. He may have a great "eye" at the plate, but a good hitter he is not.#WeAreUKComment

Re: 2009 Cincinnati Reds
I agree 100% except I would take Dunn for around $5 million. Ok, maybe I exaggerated a little. Maybe I would take him for about $2-3 million. Wouldn't that be a good salary for a pinch hitter? When you need a guy to walk or hit a home run, there aren't many better players out there than Dunn.

They havent seen the balls that are not ruled errors that he didnt even come close to getting to that the average OF would have caught. They didnt see all the meaningless solo HRS he hit with the score 10-1 in the 9th. At end of the year yes he will hit 40 HRS and drive in 100 and walk alot, SO WHAT! I want the guy that I am paying 10 million a year and batting 4th to want to hit the ball when he comes up, not to look for a walk. I want the same guy to be able to hit doubles or beat out an infield hit from time to time. I want him to hustle so the lesser guys on the team will see him and hustle.
Its just like he said a few years ago, he doesnt love the game, it is a job to him! He is just going through the motions most of the time.
And I can already hear the other "baseball" guys on this board bashing this post if they come in our Reds forum. "The guy hits 40 hrs and drives in 100 every year, he is the bestest player"! "You are just wrong not to want him on your Reds anymore"! They are just wrong about this guy and dont nor will they ever realize he is just an average baseball player with good power. If he was that great he wouldnt have lasted so long this off season and wouldnt have had to sign for less then he wanted from Mr. Jim I love to sign every ex Red I can Bowden. Re: 2009 Cincinnati Reds
While I would agree that he is not your typical clean up hitter, who would you suggest they bat 4th? Phillips is second on the team in RBI's so far. Again who would you bat fourth? And dont say Edwin, all of his RBI's have come on one swing this year. And dont say Jay Bruce either he is batting .167 so far. Maybe Hernandez and his .174 average or Gonzo and his .053 average. Oh wait I forgot about Hairston and his .143 BA. My point once again is there is no one else to bat 4th so lets leave him in the 4 hole.ND Season Ticket Holder since '72.Comment

Re: 2009 Cincinnati Reds
Sounds like the Reds got a nice return today from the Astros in the Keppinger deal. Per Rotoworld.com:
Reds acquired infielder Drew Sutton from the Astros to complete the Jeff Keppinger deal and optioned him to Triple-A Louisville.
Brutal. Keppinger was of use to the Astros, but it certainly wasn't worth giving up one of the organization's better prospects for him. Every move Houston GM Ed Wade makes seem to be focused on short term and the short term only. Sutton was outstanding in Double-A last year and even better in the AFL, hitting .315/.425/.611 with seven homers in 108 at-bats. He doesn't have great range at second, but if last year was no fluke, he has a chance of making it as a regular third baseman. It's too bad that the Astros didn't take him more seriously.MLB: Cincinnati Reds
