Re: Seattle Mariners 2012 team thread

Just watched last nights game (without knowing what happened).

    Really glad I did too!

Seager is a special player and League looks like he has it again.

The declining fastball velocity is concerning, but check out this article:
I would take movement as well, but I'm not worried about 91 vs 93 on his fastball, I'm worried about the difference between his 4 seam and his changeup. Its not quite pulling the string when there's only 2 mph difference.

Agree with RC, League is looking filthy again.

And ever since 55 picked up Smoak in his fantasy league, he's turned to crap. Release him!

I won't be sad if I never see Beaven in a Mariners uniform again.

Great to see Ethier with that grand slam!

When the time is right, Beavan and Noesi will be replaced by Hultzen and Paxton.

Beavan is just not good enough. If he's up in the zone, all he is doing is throwing batting practice. He reminds me of Carlos Silva. He might have a couple of decent years here and there when luck is on his side, but he just can't get the job done.

Hultzen looks bored at AA with his 1.28 ERA and .145 BAA. I wonder when the M's will actually challenge him?

I hardly ever find myself agreeing with Steve Kelley, but he's right.

Promote Erasmo Ramirez in place of Beavan and call up Hultzen to AAA.

I actually agree with Dave Cameron more than Steve Kelley in his roster moves idea.

I don't care how its done, but they need to get Ramirez in the rotation ASAP.

I don't think they are going to bury Beavan in long relief. The kid is a former 1st round pick, part of the Lee trade, and a Z guy. They'll stick him in Tacoma to hope to develop an out pitch and a consistent delivery. Sticking him in long relief is admitting he is a failure...even though I wish they'd stick him on a bus out of town.

Ok, I have slowly gone towards the side of moving the LF fences in at Safeco. I don't care if its Seattle or the opponents, well hit balls by right-handers should be rewarded. As far as I'm concerned, the way balls die while hit to left field is as stupid as Tal's Hill in Houston.

                          2012 M's Home: .199 BA, 3.07 runs per game.

                          2012 M's Away: .257 BA, 4.81 runs per game.

Not the most exciting games at home though Noesi can actually get people out.

When the M's play at Safeco, they have the worst OPS in baseball by 38 points.

When the M's play on the road, they have the eighth best OPS in all of baseball.

Yeah, I am becoming a proponent of them doing SOMETHING with the fences at Safeco. Smoak hit two balls that should have been gone the other night. I understand this was built to be a pitcher's park, but it is seriously stunting our offensive growth. There's nothing wrong with looking at ways to stop doing that.

I think it's mostly a psychological problem at this point. I can understand it being tough to hit home runs at Safeco, but is it really that hard just to get hits? The .199 BA at home compared to .257 on the road is pretty striking.

Yeah, it's definitely psychological. Did you see Smoak's comments?

"You get frustrated,'' Smoak said. "You go up there and you try to put yourself in the best position to succeed. And you hit a ball like that and it goes nowhere."
"You've got the roof open on a night like tonight and the ball's not going to go anywhere," he said. "You've got to get it down the lines if it's going to happen."
Both of those balls he hit would have been gone in probably 28 ballparks. He hit both pitches very well. It is obviously getting in their heads, which they can't let happen, but I understand the frustration. It's tough to really know what to do. I don't think it needs to be anything drastic but looking at the left field fences and the power alleys would not be a bad idea.

Then it feels like you're taking the easy way out and succumbing to the easiest possible solution. It will go both ways if the fences are moved in - it could have just as much of a psychological effect on our pitchers as it does our hitters.

Hopefully as the weather warms up, the ball starts carrying better.
