    re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread

Since Jocketty's meeting with Dusty Baker after last Sunday's drubbing from the Cardinals, Dusty has been showing some flexibility in the lineup and the Reds have been playing with some urgency.

Good to see Broxton back tonight, and he was hitting 98 on the gun. What is this, 2009?

I was never really on the ledge. Concerned but wasn't overly worried. Their schedule is pretty weak for the most part the rest of the way and they have a lot of home games. Barring an epic collapse, they should challenge for the Central crown. Winning the wild card game or a division series is another story. I'd like to see more from this team the rest of the way before I feel more comfortable about their post-season chances.

Francisco Cordero's final season in Cincy....six blown saves.
Aroldis Chapman this season so far....five blown saves.

Explain to me again why it was so important to keep him in the closer's role instead of moving him into the rotation?

Hoover would be a good closer for us.

The inept offense showed itself again tonight.

The Reds traded for Hoover with the idea of him being a future setup man or closer. I still think he could be that. There have been columns written in the local rag about how closers are overrated. I think in today's game they're unnecessary. If you can have a committee of guys who can get the job done for a fraction of the price, why pay top dollar to one guy to do it? I want the Nasty Boys in their prime. Spend the excess money on a bat. BTW, not saying Chapman is overpaid. I was thinking more of what Cordero used to get paid.

I agree with the closer role being overrated, and the notion that a guy like Chapman can only pitch in the 9th is very aggravating.

Great game today to split the series. Bailey dominated, offense showed up, and Hannigan is finally above the .200 line.

Totally. And that all seems like it's coming from Dusty too. The Cards have left Mujica and Rosenthal in games for 2 innings multiple times this season. Hell, in Mujica's last three appearances he's pitched 2 innings each. I don't get why the Reds don't let Chapman pitch 2 sometimes. Unavailability the following day?

I could be wrong on this, but I think Hanigan has been hurt all year and is finally healthy. He has never been a big power guy, but he always is a consistent .260-.270 hitter, not under the Mendoza line.

Yeah he has been hurt a lot of this year, and is usually a solid hitter but before he got injured he was hitting poorly. I'm just glad to see a good game offensively from him.

Yeah I'm not sure, but even if you're worried about Chapmans availability I feel comfortable with Hoover, LeCure, or Broxton pitching in the 9th.

Absolutely. It's also part of the reason I would be okay (if they don't make him a starter) with them trading him away to get a bat. Their bullpen has been great this year, and I doubt there would be much of a difference at all moving Broxton or LeCure into the closers role.
